NCDR: Drugs and BFing

Anyone know if I can take benadryl?

My allergies are insane and giving me a killer sinus headache today.  I don't want to take a decongestant bc I know that lowers milk supply.  What else can I take for allergies?

Thanks.

Re: NCDR: Drugs and BFing

  • Check kelly mom. I always looked there first.

Suddenly my life doesn't seem such a waste,
    It all revolves around you.
  • Benedryl will reduce your supply.

    One of those Neti Pots?

  • No to benadryl. I would take Zyrtec for allergies and Tylenol for the headache.

  • +1 on the Neti Pot.
  • I have taken it but my kid was older and only nursing recreationally.

  • Neti pots are awesome! They get rid of sinus headaches and pressure so much better than any meds I've taken.

  • You can take clariten-D i believe. You can't take anything with antihistamine bc it'll tank your supply. I'm a Vicks vapor rub kind of girl myself :)

  • Claritin doesn't bother my supply. I haven't tried the D version while bfing. It generally makes me incredibly jittery and strung out...

I guess I'm just gonna tough it out with tylenol and coke.

ITK - the real reason I asked here instead of Kelly Mom is that Kelly Mom only addresses the safety of the medications.  I'm more equally concerned with its affect to my supply as safety.

The neti pot will not happen.  I will drown.  And then I will die.  And you guys will miss me.  You know it's true.

I thought I already covered this whole 'Drugs are bad' thing,
Oooh, this reminds me of a confession.  BRB.

  • I wouldn't take anything with a D after the name. Decongestants dry you up, including milk supply. Hope you feel better!

  • It might be that the clariten is supposed to be the regular kind without the D? :-/ sorry if i gave bad advice.

  • probably a little late, but I have taken decongestants while nursing when the headache gets too much. I make sure  to nurse a bunch and up the water intake as much as I can. It didn't mess with my supply enough for me to not do it again. I figure the decongestant was better than the tons of caffeine and Tylenol I was taking and still hurting.  Hope you feel better
