Getting ready for Halloween!

DD and I carved our pumpkin today and made pumpkin cookies. We've been reading Harriets Halloween Candy and I think she's getting the idea that at some point she gets to dress up and there will be candy involved. I can't wait to see her face when we go home to house and strangers give her stuff.
What fall/halloween stuff are you mommas up to with the kiddos?

Re: Getting ready for Halloween!

  • We went to a "pumpkin patch" (place by the side of the road) and picked out a couple pumpkins. We painted one and carved one. DS definitely liked painting better. He thought the inside of the pumpkin was disgusting and was upset I wouldn't let him carve by himself.

We also picked out his costume together a couple weeks ago. I picked two and he got to decide between the two. Last weekend we went to Boo in the Zoo at our local zoo.

We go to Gymboree and they are having a Pumpkin Patch Party this week.

We are going to take him to a couple houses to trick or treat in our neighborhood, but I am prepared for the worst. Last year, the first neighbor we went to was dressed up as a witch and he lost it. He wouldn't go near another front door after that.

  • This is the result of our pumpkin carving. She loved emptying the goo out and helping me separate the seeds. DH did a great job carving the faces. We made a scary face and spider man. the spider man photo is a little dark but you can see the web pattern on the face IRL.

  • We went to Mickeys Not So Scary Halloween Party a couple weeks ago, DD loved it!

We also went to Boo at the Zoo at our local zoo. Every day now she asks to go back to the zoo because she thinks she's going to get candy every time now.

We picked out some pumpkins and I let her put Halloween themed stickers all over them. We picked out a Daddy pumpkin, a Mommy pumpkin, a kid pumpkin and a new baby pumpkin. She's so proud of them!

Hoping that the weather is nice on Wednesday night, our church is having a Halloween party that is going to be outside. For actual Halloween night our neighborhood doesn't do anything. I can count on two hands how many trick or treaters we got in the last two years combined living here. Everyone goes to the neighborhood across the street from ours. They throw a big block party with a fire truck that leads the kids in a costume parade, bouncy castles, hot apple cider and candy. Last year we took her there and the look on her face when we went to the first house and they put candy in her bucket - she was shocked to say the least. Her face said, "They just give you candy?? This is the greatest thing ever!"

Lucas loved scooping out the pumpkin, Nathan who just turned four did great helping carve his and Danny 10 did his all by him self!

  • DH has been working out of town M-F for a couple weeks now. We hate it, but we've had really fun weekends when he's home. So far, we've been to a local farm/pumpkin patch, to the Indianapolis ZooBoo, and we had a bonfire in our backyard last weekend and made smores after we carved our pumpkin.  One night this week DD and I are going to paint and decorate mini pumpkins! Here's a few pics
  • Halloween has been a complete bust here.  We were out of town visiting family last weekend, so we missed out on some activities, and she was sick the week before that, so we missed a few then too.  And so far this week she has refused to go to the Halloween party she'd been talking about for several weeks, refused to wear her costume to music class this morning, and I am still not sure if she will want to go trick or treating tonight or not.  So it might turn out I spent a bunch of time and money finding her a specific costume she has been talking about for months and months, and she may never even wear the dang thing.  Grr....
