Swings

My DH and I are going to go register next weekend, after we find out the sex of the baby.  We have been told by so many people that their swing has helped out tremendously.  Well it seems to me that swings used to be made to sit a lot higher than they do now, I'm sure there's a reason they are not made like that anymore, however my concern is we have a very nosey lab.  And I'm sure eventually he won't be so curious when he realizes the baby is there to stay but I'm a little concerned for at first.  So does anyone have any reccommendations of a swing that sits higher, or maybe what to do so we aren't constantly shooing the dog away?? TIA!

Re: Swings

  • I started out with a basic Graco swing that was a full-size. It was o.k. Very, very basic. The only reason I really didn't like it was because it was big/awkward and not very portable. I eventually purchased the FP RF travel swing because it was:

    A. Light and portable

    B. On clearance =)

I would think after a while your lab would leave the baby alone, especially in a moving swing =) We have a very active GSP who paid the baby very little attention when he was younger.

FWIW - Our swings have been a Godsend. It was the only place I could get DS to nap for the first 5 months.

  • I wish I had a good suggestion for you!  Our dog is a mini schnauzer, so not even very big at all, but even I had concerns about having the baby in the swing with him around (even though he's very gentle).

I never thought about the type of swing...but we did purchase and set up a doggie gate so that we can leave our schnauz in one side of the house if the baby is on swing and I'm walking around getting things done, etc.

I would def. think you need a full size swing though and not one of the portable ones?  My friend has one of those and it does seem to sit much lower to the ground.

  • Thanks so much for your input!  I appreciate it!
  • I would say you could try a cat-tactic and grab your spray bottle when pup gets a little too excited and eager around baby, but a lab would probably love it and think you had invented a fun new game. lol

  • many babies love the swing - but many do not - so don't spend too much money on one if cost is a big issue.

DS hated the swing we had for him - was in it maybe 5x's for 3 minutes each. He still does not like swings at the park, etc.

the one he liked the best was the portable aquarium swing we got at a yard sale and kept at my sister's house- go figure!!!

  • I must be the odd one out.  The swing was our biggest waste of money.  And we just bought the simpliest one there was too.  DS used it ONCE his whole life.  He hated it.

That's the thing with all these baby "gadgets"  you never know what your baby will like until he/she is here.
