Cloth Diapering

How many covers?

Hello all! After much deliberation, I have decided to fill out my NB stash of 19 BumGenius NB AIO (that I am sewing fleece/flannel doublers for since I might come across absorbency issues) with workhorses and covers. I have a couple questions though...

I am hoping to go pick up this lot I found on craigslist (20 orange NB workhorses for $65) but if not, I am planning to order new, since it seems most workhorses I've found on the GMD BST are dang close to new prces once you factor in shipping anyways. I am wondering about the difference between the NB size and small. We'll most likely only be using until out AIO and pockets fit, so we don't need them to fit super long, so would getting only NB size be okay? I was thinking of buying 15 NB, is this enough (with 19 BG AIO also)? How many covers should I get for only 15 workhorses? I was thinking of picking up a five pack of FST to have around as a backup, but am scared of flats, so I would definitely prefer to use mostly the AIO and workhorses. I plan to wash EOD.

ANother question I have, is for anyone who has made their own fitteds out of prefolds. I found these tutorials (here and here, the first definitely looks easier) and it looks fairly doable. I have sewing experience, so I'm not worried about doing it, but I wonder if anyone has made their own and ended up happy with them? I did a search on here, and it seems that a good number of ladies made their own and ended up not liking them.... It would certainly be cheaper (more like three bucks a diaper instead of 5 to 7.... thoughts?

Re: How many covers?

  • Get the nb workhorses. I'd get 4 covers. Don't be scared of the FSTs. You can do it.

Four or five covers is what I was thinking, so that is good! And thanks for the vote of confidence on the flats. I'll laugh when I fall in love with them and end up trading in all my diapers for flats. Though, DH wont use flats or prefolds so I guess realistically, that wont happen....

We used prefolds and covers for a while with DD< and while I didn't mind the, DH hated them.

  • Don't fear the flats/flour sack towels.
If you feel intimidated by them, start with an easy fold first.
Folding them to imitate a prefold is super easy (use a prefold as your size guide).  The diaper bag fold is also easy.  If you find both of those too confusing, you could always pad fold it.

My husband doesn't care for flats or prefolds, but will use either of them pad folded (if he has to lol).

"If he has to" pretty much describes my husband too. He wont let me buy a bunch, but if I buy a few he will use them if he didn't have a choice! Haha! I winder if it would be possible to sew fitteds out of FSTs.........

  • What kind of fleece are you using? Natural fibers absorb, polyester fleece is hydrophobic and can't be used as a doubler.

I have not purchased the fleece yet. The flannel is cotton. I will make sure to look for natural fiber fleece though, for sure!

Though, I do have TONS of flannel, so I was also thinking I might just use flannel in more layers...... Would that work? I wonder how many layers I would need. 4? 6? 8?

This is why I have a billion AIOs/pockets.

    Now he prefers prefolds/flats.

    go figure.

Do you mean flannel made into a doubler?  Or flannel flats?  Or flannel sewn into a prefold?

  • Flannel as a doubler. Or hell, even flannel flats. I can imagine an all flannel fitted would be super expensive with as many layers as you would have to make....
