Mini pill vs. IUD

I'm torn as to which to choose for bc - mini pill or an IUD. ?I was on regular bcp before TTC so I get the whole mini pill concept, but I know less about IUDs and don't know anyone with one. ?So what do you use? ?Do you like it? ?

Re: Mini pill vs. IUD

  • I have Mirena, and thus far, no complaints. Quite a bit of bleeding after it was put in, and every once in a while I spot after sexy time.  But that is all to be expected with it being this new (I got it the week before Thanksgiving). But you need to ask yourself, do you want another baby soon.

  • I got the Mirena, too.  No problems, except Dh says he can feel it when we have sex so I may see if OB can 'trim' the strings.

We don't want another baby for at least 2-3 years, so I thought it'd be easier to get this than to take a pill every day.  And, cheaper in the long run.  My insurance paid for it in full.

  • I've tried it all.....IMO the Mirena or another form of IUD is the way to go.  Every method will have side effects, but I've heard of more surprise pregnancies with the mini-pill (I'm assuming you BF...).  Plus you don't have to remember to take a bcp every day.  If you don't mind spotting for a couple weeks after insertion and cramping for a day or two after insertion, then I would suggest Mirena.  But do your research on both and check with your insurance company to see what they'll cover on Mirena or other IUDs.  HTH.

  • Oh and the first time I had the Mirena before my daughter, I had it in for about 10 months.  It took 2 months for me to get pregnant after I had it removed.  Same results with my friend who has had the Mirena as well.  I had this one inserted at 7 weeks pp.  Sorry for posting twice Smile

  • I have the mirena now and I love it. It did hurt some when it was put in, but the few mins of pain are so worth not having to take a pill everyday. I had 2 periods, but they have stopped completely now.
  • I had Mirena before we decided to try for baby #2 and I really liked it. I've had some hormone issues since having it out though. It only took 1 month to get pregnant after removing it, but my body wouldn't produce progestrone and I lost the baby. The doctor's didn't figure out the hormone problem until I got pregnant again and lost that baby as well, so I would suggest that if you get it, make sure to have your doctors test your hormones after you have it out and conceive. I don't know if that is a common problem, but it never hurts to be proactive. I would have one put back in if I weren't thinking about trying for baby #3 in the next year. Now I'm on the mini pill and so far, so good.
