I was set on home birth until I found out I have twins. I'm still really wanting a natural delivery and wondering if anyone has a doctor recommendation in the Long Beach, CA area. Thanks
Unfortunately, for a safe delivery of twins, an epidural must be placed during labor in case a stat C-section is necessary. I am not sure if it is possible to have the line placed without the meds? You can ask.
Many MFM/high risk OBs also have doulas on their team. Perhaps you can find a practice that has one.
D & L are here at 34 weeks 4 days by vaginal and breech delivery on 11/19/2013
Two healthy boys weighing 4 lbs 15 ozs and 4 lbs 5 ozs. Only 6 days in the NICU and getting bigger, stronger and cuter every day!
Yes, you can have an epidural placed without having them hook up the drip.
At this point, Ekreps, finding quality prenatal and perinatal care providers who deliver in hospitals with level 3 NICUs should be the most important focus... there are so many complications that can arise during a multiples pregnancy that going unmedicated should be seen as a perk if you get to do it - not something you change providers over. Talk to providers in your area who specialize in high risk pregnancies and multiples deliveries. Being on the west coast, it shouldn't be difficult for you to find one who supports avoiding unnecessary medical interventions. If you're willing to make a bit of a drive, my friend labored unmedicated until she reached 8cm (her twins were huge, born at 39 weeks and over 9lbs each) - her care provider was in Laguna and she says that's probably a bit far for you, but she recommended calling your local birthing center and asking whom they recommend for high risk patients (because that's what she did).
*Spontaneous* OHSS diagnosed 08.06.2012 Right ovary removed 09.04.2012 via vertical laparotomy Essure implant placed on remaining tube 06.13.2013; successful followup scan 09.30.2013
It's not necessary for an epidural to be placed for a twin birth. However, should an emergency c/s be needed, if there is no epidural placed general anesthesia is used.
