Prenatal Vitamin

edited October 2014 in July 2015 Moms
What kind of prenatal are you ladies taking? I was taking the Target brand until we got our BFP. I just bought Vitafusion gummies with DHA and folic acid. The only thing it seems to be lacking is iron. Iron always upsets my stomach but I obviously want what is best for baby.

Re: Prenatal Vitamin

  • I'm just taking a Safeway brand prenatal. In a few weeks I will probably not be able to keep it down, so then I'll just switch to taking folic acid.

They're huge, smell awful, and I have a hard time getting them down. I take it right before bed because I notice less nausea. I try to eat a snack with it, last night I had a cheese string and it went over pretty well. I'm heading down to the states in November and will look for gummy ones then.

I love the Rainbow Light prenatal all in one. It has "non-constipating" iron and is supposed to be gentle on your stomach with ginger and probiotics. It's also plant-based which I like.

I have a huge pill but it has folic acid and iron, which are the two things I'm most concerned about. So far, so good, but I can see gagging it down in my future. I take it right after dinner so my stomach is full and I can laze on the couch afterwards, for the most part.

VitaFusion gummies as well. I *HATE* swallowing pills. I am also supplementing extra Folic acid with a chewable. No iron either. With my last pregnancy it wasn't an issue until the third tri.

  • My RE added folgard to my med regimen today due to my MTHFR. Basically it is an extra boost of folic acid. I had to buy an old lady pill box to keep track of all of my meds lol! Im thinking that my labs will be checked a little more frequently due to the MTHFR so if my iron gets low hopefully I'll know sooner rather than later.

I believe they are, but maybe they only tell you if there is a concern. My last pregnancy, during the 3rd trimester, they told me that my levels were super low and wanted me checked again. I guess it was fine when they rechecked, because I never heard anything else about it.

  • So many articles and research studies show those vitamin gummies are just not the way to go. My obgyn suggested I take two-three flintstone vitamins if I can't hold down a prenatal but so far my rainbow lights are working great (been on them for over 3 months to prepare for baby).
  • I've talked to my doctor on this and she advised against it due to the lack of vitamin dosage-- basically you'll still have to take pills to supplement what they don't have.
I'll ask my doctor for the scientific links.
Too many links to post here but here are some: https://www.doublexscience.org/the-gummy-deficiency/

  • I take the the up&up form of One a day. It's 2 pills the prenatal and DHA. I used centrum last pregnancy but they are expensive and the same as these. The rx my doctor gave me always made me sick.
  • I use one a day and they've combined the two pills to one and I take it with a bigger meal and nausea as of yet! It's also the one my doctor recommended
  • Thanks for the info, I have an appt with my RE on Monday and will ask her about it.

With DD I tried to choke down the prenatal horse pills in other brands and had a really hard time with them, especially in first tri.  For me, getting a lower dosage in a gummy is better than trying to get the full dosage through a pill but failing because I can't get it down or keep it down.
