Joint co-ed Shower

What do you ladies think about a joint coed (nontraditional) baby shower?  My good friend from college and I are expecting our first due within a week of each other and thought it'd be fun to throw a joint baby shower for friends.  Doing it somewhere neutral (i.e. restaurant) and inviting the guys (and guys' friends)... we're both having traditional ones thrown separately by family (which will be kinda full).  We thought it'd be easier to just have a big party w/our friends, for example both our traditional showers will be both our side & inlaws, adding up to 40-50 ppl!  (Our DHs are into it and we think a lot of friends would bring spouses/boyfriends!)

Also, would it be ok to kinda be the host of your own baby shower if in this setting?

Re: Joint co-ed Shower

  • I think it sounds like a ton of fun.  DH and I are doing a co-ed shower.

  • My BF is throwing me and DH a co-ed babyshower.  It is going to be bigger than the shower my mom is doing for us.  This is DH's baby too and he wants to be involved and many of his guy friends have even asked.  I think its fun and plus you get to see all your friends to celebrate and not just the girls.

  • Ok, something is wrong with my brain today. I saw the title of the post and thought you were talking about a shower...you know, the kind with water. Durrrr.

I think co-ed showers are pretty popular these days. I went to one for a friend and it was fun. Obviously, they didn't play any shower games. It was more of just a get together with friends, food, and alcohol. The joint shower might be a little more difficult, though. Are people coming going to be friends of both couples? They might feel a little put off by having to buy presents for both couples.

Edit: Obviously if people are friends with both couples they will eventually buy you both presents, but it seems daunting to have to buy them for the same shower.  Does that even make sense? Maybe I should go back to bed.

  • Sounds like fun to me.  I say go for it!

  • That sounds like a really cool idea. Especially concidering you are having such a large formal party. I think planning it yourself would be perfect.

    Good luck!

  • Sounds good but opening presents may be an issue if you're expecting 40-50 people and each have to open gifts...Not sure how you'd get out of it or make it more fun for everyone but just thought I'd point that out
  • We did a co-ed shower and most of the people loved it!

I might have a small family one too.

  • I think we're gonna do this too! I have a friend that is due 4 weeks after me and I think our mutual friends are gonna throw us a joint one. I think it'll be fun! I'm a more the merrier kinda gal anyway!
  • I think it sounds like fun! You said nontraditional, but do you expect that people will bring gifts? Will they bring them for both couples or just the one they know? ...or are these all mutual friends?

  • Thansk for all the input ladies!  (Sorry so late) Good point on the friends & gifts issue (mutual friends v. friends of just one couple).  I'm all about saying gifts not necessary on the invitations, because we just wanna get together with ppl!  And I know the people who would want to give us baby gifts they would do it, at the shower or not!

Luckily for us another friend offered to host it at her place!  I don't feel as awkward now!
