Frank Breech...I'm terrified

Hey All! I'm almost 34 weeks pregnant and at my last ultra sound they said my baby was in the frank breech position. I'm extremely nervous he will have hip complications once he's here. Has anyone gone through this? Help! :)

  • With modern medicine even if he does have hip problems they can be corrected with braces and exercise. So quit freaking out.

  • Like the pps said, worst case scenario baby will have to wear a brace.  It really isn't something to freak out about.

I hear you -- my niece was breech, had hip dysplasia as an infant, had to wear a harness for a couple of months. I was told at an u/s a week ago that my baby was breech and it made me nervous. Even when you know that IF there is an issue, there are effective treatments, it can still make you feel apprehensive. I think that's understandable.

What has helped alleviate my concerns is listening to others on the board who have reassured me that there is still plenty of time for baby to move, and doing my own research/reading on breech. 97% of babies are in the head down position for birth! So there really is a very high likelihood baby will move.

And again, even if there are issues with the hips, the socket and ligaments are still pliable for quite some time, and there is little likelihood of serious issues down the road when it is detected early and treated appropriately. Hopefully you've already found a pediatrician that you feel comfortable with -- you can always make an appointment to discuss your concerns with her/him!

Hope that helps reassure you a bit.

  • DD was breech, delivered by c sec and had hip dysplasia in her right hip. She wore a brace for about 8 weeks. Her dysplasia was not severe. But it was caught right at delivery and she was at an ortho and in a brace at just a few days old.

  • Did you talk to your doctor about what they recommend should LO still be in a breech position? Personally I recommend not worrying too much...especially if your doctor is not concerned.

    Test
  • Still lots of time for baby to turn. My youngest was breech for a good portion of the latter part of the second trimester and into the third. He turned vertex at 32 weeks, and was oblique breech at 34, but was back to vertex at 36. He stayed put.

This little girl has a thing for being in the complete/frank breech position, but she also moves into vertex, too. She's a mover. With open-keen chest, inversion, pelvic tilts, Webster, and other therapies, there's still time for her to settle into vertex and stay there.

  • Thank you all so so much! It's my first and of course it was a heart sinker when I heard the news. Thanks again :)

  • I think at 34 weeks the baby can still move. Also has your doctor said they will for sure deliver vaginally, I was under the impression most breech babies are delivered via CS.

    Um also "heart breaker"?

  • First if all it was a heart sinker for ME considering I've had several complications along the way and the birth isn't what I'm afraid of...it's the hip dysplasia that was upsetting to me.. you can't tell me how I felt. Looking at it was "upsetting" and i wad worried about my baby
    Thanks

Hey...I told you I was giving you the benefit of the doubt...further you cannot dictate how others feel as much as we cannot dictate how you felt and continue to feel nor your choice of words.

I am pretty confident that all of us had some sort of complication...so you are not alone and actually could be in good company.

My LO is back to breech and I am fine with that since I trust my doctor to do the best for him which includes (and not limited to) mitigating the risk of hip dysplasia.

If you are this concerned you should be talking with your DR about these concerns and what the likely course of action they can take. If you are still freaking out talk to another doctor for a second opinion or a therapist to talk through the anxiety.

  • I didn't see OP trying to dictate anyone else's feelings. She expressed her anxiety and thanked people for helping her feel better. Perhaps she could have made a better word choice but she is entitled to her feelings. There is a difference between supplying information and perspective in an effort to reassure, and essentially saying, "You have no right to be concerned b/c others have it so much harder." How is THAT not trying to dictate or control someone else's feelings?

It really is about HOW you say things.

  • Yeah I'm not going to play the WK game. Personally, I FELT the statement heart sinking was overdramatic at something that could potentially (and highly likely) change by the time of delivery. Those of us with diagnoses that are not so up in the air have had "heart sinking" news from their doctors. No, this is not pain olympics here, but seriously, worrying about breech 6 weeks before EDD is just dramatic, IN MY OPINION.

I think that's totally valid. We're all entitled to our own feelings and opinions. It's HOW we express them to each other that can lead to hurt feelings and drama. If you had said the above originally to the OP, she might not have responded defensively. KWIM? No one likes to feel invalidated, whether that's you by the OP's poor word choice, or the OP by the way people called her on that word choice.

  • So what are we white knighting about now?

    Test
  • We should all accept OP's overdramatic statement that her breech baby at 34 weeks was heart sinking because she's entitled to feel that way. The end.

  • I'm a FTM too and super paranoid/worried about every tiny thing. Still though, if my baby is otherwise healthy, I would consider it a very minor issue and be relieved nothing major was wrong if he actually had hip dysplasia that could likely be fixed with a brace for 6-8 weeks.

That's still a big if, considering baby can still move into position. I dunno, my friend's baby actually has hip dysplasia and she seems fine other than the brace. While I want my baby to be 100% perfect, I wouldn't freak out about something that could be fixed with a brace. That's just me though, but my advice is to pick your battles, OP.
  • This is absolutely hilarious to me. People start a conversation on this board about their own weight gain and I post a serious question and get attacked by random strangers about how I felt. Hope you all feel better now lol. What a freaking joke this board is. Thank you to those who offered REAL advice!

@hayrey2424‌ - you got a lot of really good, reassuring advice. It wasn't until you called breech a "heart sinker" at this VERY early point in the game that anyone felt a need to correct you. I would suggest you take a look at our birth announcements, followed by the high risk check in thread in order to give yourself some perspective. No one is calling you a bad person, nor are you being "attacked." Your LO is really not in any immediate danger, that's all.
    This.

You're allowed to be concerned. Others are allowed to tell you when you're being offensive.

Just because I defended your right to be concerned does not give you a free pass to be an asshole.
