Look Who's Not Talking

Anyone want to offer solidarity, support, or non Dr. Google-based wisdom about late talkers to hold me over until we next see LO's pediatrician?  At 15 months, her doctor wasn't concerned because she clearly understands a lot of spoken language (follows simple directions, points to body parts she knows the name of, etc.) and babbles with a variety of consonant sounds and speech-like inflection.  Within the last two or three weeks, she's finally started to watch and listen while I read to hear, which is encouraging, and she's used the sign for milk once in a while.  This mama could really stand to hear a "mama" soon, though.  I'd even go for "no" at this point.  Do any of you, particularly those with older kids, have any experience with late talking and/or speech therapy?  TIA!

Re: Look Who's Not Talking

  • We are hit and miss. He would say words but his go to are "dada" "bye" "ya" for yes. He completely understand because his responses are accurate. He only say momma when he want something. Theres other words but not consistent. I just play the label game and hope he can talk more before#2.

  • Ds1, who will be 4 in February talks non stop and has done so since he turned 2. Prior to his 2nd birthday he said about 2 words. The ped wasn't concerned as it's more about comprehension than anything else right now according to him. Ds2 talks a lot. All kids are different.

  • One of my friends sister's LO wasn't saying *any* words at 18 months, and that was the point at which they went in for free evaluation regarding his language development.  I think their little is now in speech therapy, or whatever it is for 18 month olds.  So my inclination would be that I wouldn't worry until around then.

Yeah, LO doesn't have any words at this point, so I have a feeling we will be headed in for an evaluation if nothing changes in the next five or six weeks.  I just have a hard time imagining what toddler speech therapy actually entails.
  • Owen still isn't saying any words. I mean he says mama, and dada sometimes.
    That's pretty much it.
I think he is trying to say "what's that? " but maybe I'm just imagining it because it just kinda sounds like 'dat.'

Ds2 didn't talk much, and finally they discovered he had fluid in his ears so everything he heard was muffled. They said he heard what we would hear if we were under water and someone was talking to us.

He had to have his ears drained and within days he was saying words.

  • No words here. DS understands soooooo much and points to just about every item and decoration in the house when asked. I try everyday to coax words out of him. We get LaLa, NighNigh, and Mama with lots of coaching but they don't refer to anything in particular. The sound that I am deciphering as a possible word is Bah (book).

Doc wasn't concerned at 15 months. He could see our worry when he asked about words. He said that early speech does not have an effect on intelligence. As long as he is comprehending what we are saying. Our doc retired after our last appt so we will be seeing someone new at 18 months. We'll see what she thinks then.
  • My brother said little to nothing until he was 3 years old.  He really didn't talk.  I went to school and suddenly he exploded with words.

  • My dd says Mama and Dada. At our 15 month appoinment my dr wasn't too concerned however she recommend I self refer to the provincial speech program now because there's a long wait list.

We finally got on the wait list this morning and I found out the wait list is EIGHT TO TEN MONTHS. So if we still having problems she wouldn't even be seen until after she's 2! I'll have to consider other options in a few months I think if there's no progress. Although I have no idea what other options there is. I'm quite sure this is a Canadian thing and the states is different.
  • A knows a few words but doesn't repeat them often except dada, ball and mama when she is whiny, tired or wants something. But she understands a lot so I just focus on that positive. Its hard bc we have a niece who is a year older and I feel like she was doing more around A's age and I'm sure the family compares them.

  • LO barely talks but understands lots. He is getting pretty consistent on dada, can say shoe and dog and knows what they mean but doesn't say them that often, and says no with meaning a few times a day. But other than that, he doesn't say much other than babbling.
  • Briar isn't talking yet. He will grunt and point when he wants something. He is in speech therapy once a week. My 4 year old didn't start talking til he was 2 yr old and now you can't get him to shut up. They will start talking when they are ready!

  • DS doesn't say words very often. He can say mom, dad, dog and a few others but very rarely actually uses them. He mostly babbles. He does understand most of what I say/ask & he signs eat, please, and more. I'm not at all concerned as long as he's understanding and vocalizing. I've known a lot of late talkers and kids who had to do speech therapy (my youngest nephew is in it now). If he ends up needing it, it's not a big deal.
