3) We get along fine, although obviously the age gap made things difficult when we were growing up (more so for her than me!)
4) Nope. I am totally Type A, and my sister is completely irresponsible. I think there are a LOT of external factors that came into play that made that happen.
5) I loved the movie Cinderella when I was little, and I loved acting it out even more. One time I had a bucket of sudsy water and a washrag and was "washing" the driveway while singing "Sing Sweet Nightingale". I was 6, my sister was 13. Her friends saw. She was mortified by me.
This is a great story! It made me giggle out loud when I read it.
3. My older brother and I are civil but not friendly we are very different people who don't get the other person I guess.
My younger brother and i get along but I am extremely hard on him (he is like 8 years younger) because he is very dependant on my parents and extremely lazy--is used to everyone babying him and I don't put up with it. My parents always ask if they can send him to my house for the summer, I have no tv, I would only allow him to use the internet for schooling (which I posted yesterday he has been in high school online for 6 years) and he would be expected to do farm chores. EVERY summer they asked and every summer he cried his way out of it because he knows I am a total hard ass and he wouldn't get away with anything. My parents did him no favors babying him and I don't get why they have such a hard time saying no to him--they never had trouble saying no to me and my older brother growing up. I sometimes wonder if its because he is my step dads actual child and not step children. Hes all around a good person, but he will probably never succeed without someone holding his hand every step of the way.
4. Yes, for me and my younger brother anyways, I was always kind of neglected (my parents never really paid too much attention since I was independent) and my younger brother is babied beyond belief. I remember him crying at Christmas because he only got 8 presents one year when my parents didn't have any money, I was 19 and appalled that my parents let him get away with that sort of stuff. But my mom always said she was tired--she already did the parenting thing once and argued with me and my brother so she gave in too much to my younger brother
5. When my and my older brother (16 mo. older than me) were about 6-7 we used to go stand out in hail storms with buckets on our head. Don't know why but we LOVED it.
1) 2 brothers 2) Middle child. Older brother is ten months and 14days older (irish twins!) younger brother is 4 year younger 3) Yes, we moved away from our huge new england family when we were 9,8,& 4, its been us against the world ever since. Older bro and I were basically twins.Though it wasn’t till college when little bro moved in with me that he became my person. 4) Totally, Older bro is the typical 1st born (read navy guy) over protective etc. Younger bro is the baby totally gets his way its actually comical.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
5) I clearly recall my mother asking my older brother and i if we wanted a sibling. We both just looked at each other and said NO and walked away. We've never let little bro forget that. Even now we’ll pull that card to make him buy us around of drinks.
**Siggy Challenge What You're Looking Forward to Most after Baby Arrives**
1. 1 sister (3 years older), and 1 brother (4 years younger)
2. Full-out middle child syndrome here--I'm not the oldest, youngest, only boy or only girl.
3. Since becoming a 'mom-to-be' my sister and I have gotten much closer. I guess she takes me more seriously now. She has always acted like more of a mom than a sister to me--ALWAYS. So serious. My brother and her used to gang up on me all the time....they are somewhat closer than I am with either. Although, as he is getting older (26) we are getting closer. My parents couldn't have had 3 more different children.
4. YES. My sister is so serious. My brother shrugs off all responsibility because he always has been able to. I'm the hard-working, care free, wild child.
5. I used to have to bribe my sister to play Barbies with me. I had to play kickball/whatever she wanted for 45 minutes in exchange for 10 minutes of Barbie play.
1) How many siblings do you have? 3 (brothers) 2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other? Oldest 3) Do you get along with your siblings? If you don't have any, do you wish you did? we all get along 4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today? I am the only one married with kids, so yes in that sense. 5)
Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or
just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child.I love being a part of a big family. There was never a dull moment in our house. I miss that when I go over there now.
~~~Big brother 11.29.05 & Little Brother 6.18.09~~~
2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other? I'm in the middle.
3) Do you get along with your siblings? Yes, as adults we are all really close, growing up, not so much! But I think that is pretty normal!
4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today? I do. At my dads I was the youngest and at my moms I was the oldest but overall I was in the middle (I know, so confusing!) So I feel like I got to have a taste of all of the different sibling roles and that has helped me have a better understanding of how it can be.
5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child. My mom had to give my oldest sister up for adoption when she had her at 18 (not by her choice ). I never knew anything about her until I was in 4th grade (10 years old). I will never forget the first time I talked to her on the phone and the first time I met her! We are really close now, literally, we live across the street from each other! While visiting her here here in Cinci I met her neighbor who is now my husband and the rest is my happily ever after!!! Brings tears to my (over emotional) eyes just thinking about our story!!
2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other?
I'm the second-oldest.
3) Do you get along with your siblings? If you don't have any, do you wish you did?
I do for the most part. My older sister is a little bit much sometimes, but overall we have a good relationship.
4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today?
Most definitely. I learned early on the weight of responsibility life hands us.
5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child
My older sister tried to kill me. Well, not altogether on purpose, but still. It all started one day when our parents got a new mattress. The new mattress was on their bed, and the old mattress was leaning up against the wall. You can see where I'm going with this. Being the adventurous 5 and 8 year old tomboys that we were, we decided that it would be great fun to scale the old mattress, and use the new mattress as a trampoline. We jumped happily back and forth between the two for about 30 minutes, when my sister decided she was too warm, and turned on the ceiling fan. Then she decided I was taking too long to jump, and pushed me into the rotating blades, knocking me unconscious and opening a giant gash in my forehead.
With the combination of gushing head wound, and unconscious me, she logically assumed I was dead and ran off to tell my dad, who was supposed to be watching us while mom was out shopping with my grandma. My mom came home to a trail of blood from their bedroom out the front door, and my bloody dress soaking in the laundry room sink. My dad isn't big on leaving notes, but apparently understood the importance of removing a blood stain before it set.
DH and I are both only children. He loved it and wanted the same for DS. I hated it and referred to myself as a "lonely" child, instead of an only child.
F15 December Siggy Challenge: Holiday Decoration Fails
1) How many siblings do you have? None 2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other? Only 3) Do you get along with your siblings? If you don't have any, do you wish you did? None, but I never really wanted it. My mom is an only child and my dad has 2 sisters and a brother, but NONE of them had kids until I was like 16.. so not only was I the only child -- I was the ONLY grandkid for YEARS. I was really a little adult from very early on. 4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today? Yeah, I think so. I think I am pretty independent because of it.
5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child.
Nothing I can think of in particular, but I was very lucky that my parents were both teachers so every summer we did A LOT of stuff together. Even if it was just that we were bored and rode to a museum or took the day and went to the beach. We always did stuff together. So, I am really lucky in that.
@DronkeyGal mine was a closed adoption as well and my birth family is from a different state. We got lucky and both my birthmom and I posted information on the adopt.com and were able to connect. If you really want to connect, there are good resources out there to help in the process.
Very cool! Thanks for sharing. It has always been a sensitive subject with my mom but you're right, I bet with social media today there is a good chance we could connect. I would want to ok it with my mom first before posting anything though.
Totally know where you are coming from. I decided to search before telling my parents...I figured why freak them out in the event that nothing came of it or I found her and she wanted nothing to do with me. Ignorance is bliss! In the end, when I did tell them they were uber supportive and we all get along amazing (my bestie has a horror story for her reunification, so I've seen both). I will say that over the years though I have seen hurt and jealousy between "my two" families...but they all somehow get past it! If you ever want to chat..PM.
1) I have one biological sister (17) & three *bonus* siblings (23, 27, 30). Our mom's were best friends & we grew up across the street from one another. Their mom died suddenly when we (Nicola & I) were sixteen. After that, my mom stepped in as their maternal figure. We celebrate all holidays together & are just a big blended family.
2) I'm the oldest between Brooke & I, but if you include Philip, Justin & Nicola, I'm the second youngest.
3) yes! I am really, really close to my bonus siblings...especially Nicola, who'll be the godmother of my child. Justin lives in London, so I don't see him very often, but we have a great relationship. Philip just moved back from holland, following a divorce, and we are becoming closer as we get older. However, my biological sister is on the lower end of the autism spectrum (and is entirely non verbal) so it's very difficult to have a relationship with her.
4) in my core family, it's the dynamic of being an only child because of my sister's disability. However, I had to sacrifice a lot of time & attention that most only children get (from my parents) because my sister (obviously) needs more care & attention. It made it really hard as a teenager when I was struggling with my own issues & they just didn't have the resources to really help me. However, I think that being an *only* child made me really independent & self sufficient. I also very much need my alone time to decompress.
Now, with my bonus siblings, I'm treated like the baby of the family. They tease me & my brother even gave me a swirly when I was younger. They are always there to give me advice & are very protective of me.
5) I just love every single Christmas when we are all together.
1) How many siblings do you have? I have 4 siblings 2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other? Middle! (technically) I have 1 sister (birth mom's daughter) and 1 adopted sister I have met. Then 1 half brother and sister I have never met. I was adopted and my birth father left my birth mom when I was very young so I have never met his children. My sister just turned 15 and my adopted sister is 26.
3) Do you get along with your siblings? If you don't have any, do you wish you did? I get along very well with my sisters. 4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today? I think so. I had the opportunity to be a part of both families my whole life. I am very close with my birth mother and sister. I am also very close to my adopted family and sister. 5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child. Honestly, my older sister tortured me my whole childhood. I don't have too many good memories of her. We used to clean the whole basement on Friday nights, set up a movie, pick a board game, lay out blankets and pillows, and our parents would make pizza and have family night. Every single Friday until we were about 15. I always loved that.
1) How many siblings do you have?
Two! A brother and a sister.
2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other?
I'm the middle child. 8-} But my brother is older and my sister is younger. We're each 3 years apart.
3) Do you get along with your siblings? For the most part. My brother and I are very alike. High IQs, very analytical and logical. My brother has no emotions whatsoever (but is the kind of robot who knows what human rules of etiquette are, so he mostly can stop himself from being overly offensive), and I tend to repress mine. My sister is all emotion and no logic. I still like her, but I have a hard time understanding her motivations when she acts in an illogical manner.
4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today?
Definitely. I don't think I would be who I am today if I hadn't have grown up mostly playing with an emotionless, Type-A, must win at all costs older brother. I spent a lot more time playing Star Wars and Lego space battles than My Little Pony or Barbie. I mean, I did that stuff with friends, but at home I was always playing boy games. I didn't spend a whole lot of time with my sister. She was always an independent player.
5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Hard to think of just one. I ate a few big bites of a bar of soap once because my brother convinced me it was delicious. I mostly remember sitting in the cold, dark basement having the time of my life playing with our suitcase full of Lego. I'd help him find blocks to build spaceships with, and we'd build ships and houses and animals... we could Lego it up for hours.
One time my sister thought her and her friend could go down to the corner store for candy (they were four years old). The corner store was about seven blocks away. They got lost, and we (myself, my brother, my parents, and the girl's grandparents) spent a long time frantically searching for them. That was one of my biggest childhood impressions of my sister - her doing stupid things that made no sense. But she was always a sweet, caring child who was nice to everyone.
@AF9211 and @CatLadyTX I am suprised we are the only ones without siblings so far. I have always wanted more than one child. My father is an only child and my mother has one brother that she doesn't speak to. We never had much family around and that always made me sad. I am happy that DH has a big family. He only has 1 sister but has a ton of cousins. I enjoy his big family gatherings. And now DS has a ton (like 22) 2nd cousins and 2 1st cousins. I love watching him play with other kids and can't wait for him to have a brother.
2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other? I'm the youngest.. 18 months between us, one year apart in school
3) Do you get along with your siblings? If you don't have any, do you wish you did? Heh... No. We have the most volatile relationship. One minute we are best friends and the next we don't get along. I'm sure some of you remember some stories. We are ok today but sadly I always have a "it's only a matter of time" mentality during the calm before yet another storm.
4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today? Absolutely. Birth order paired with her immaturity, my maturity and our closeness in age doomed us. I wasn't allowed to have friends her age, couldn't like boys in the next grade up from mine, etc. Being that close in age, and the same sex but starkly different personalities (me positive and low-key, her high strung and stubborn) was and still is a tough battle for us. I love her... But she sure makes it tough
5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child. When we are on, we have the best time. We had annual passes to Disneyland and though we went to different high schools (I'm not kidding that we need space from each other) she used to call the office as my mom and pick me up from my first class and we would go to Disneyland for the day and be back before our parents knew.
1) How many siblings do you have? 2 that I know, and 2 somewhere in the world I will never meet 2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other? Middle 3) Do you get along with your siblings? If you don't have any, do you wish you did? Yes, we make each other crazy sometimes but we love each other and hang out when we can. 4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today? No 5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child. I broke my brother's arm and no one believed him! Poor guy! We were riding bikes and he crashed and I didn't see him in time and ran his arm over. He told my parents it was broken and they just laughed at him. It was really broken, like needed surgery broken. I felt awful, we joke about it now but every time I see the scar I feel guilty.
1) How many siblings do you have? 3 2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other? #3 of 4, I am considered the middle child as the other middle child is the only boy in the family, somehow he was treated a lot different.
3) Do you get along with your siblings? Didn't before, but now we're all adults living in different cities/countries, we seem to be a bit less awkward and are exchanging emails and we chat on messages daily/weekly.
4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today? I think so. Being the stereotypical middle child with the infinite freedom and far stronger personality/independence, I felt the need to find my own path and left home at 17 to a completely different country without first telling anyone. My other siblings were too coddled to leave the nest until much later.
5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child. My little sister is 7 years younger than me. I remember taking her to the park when she was a toddler to play on the swings. On some days, I'd spend my some of my savings on Mcdonalds fries to share with her on the way. She loved dipping fries into ketchup. She'd only do 1 at a time and then hold it up with the ketchup on top, say "candle!" with a huge smile on her face.
1) How many siblings do you have? 5. 2 younger full siblings and 3 older half siblings 2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other? On my dad's side, I am in the middle but I am my mom's oldest and was raised that way. 3) Do you get along with your siblings? If you don't have any, do you wish you did? We get along for the most part. I haven't really fought with any of them since I moved out 5 years ago. 4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today? Definitely! For me at least, being raised as the oldest I am far more responsible...and a tad bossy haha! 5)
Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or
just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child.When we were living on Maui, we took a boat over to Lanai for the day and there was a huge green sea turtle on the beach that we took pictures with. It was pretty amazing to share that with my siblings. We were 10, 8, and 5 I think at the time.
I have 2 half sisters, 3 step sisters, and a step brother
2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other?
Depends on which side you want to look at. I am the only with my mom and dad. I am the middle on my mom's side, the oldest on my dad's
3) Do you get along with your siblings? If you don't have any, do you wish you did?
I get along with all of them except my oldest step sister. She is a monster, brat, and loser, all rolled into one.
4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today?
Absolutely. I feel like am independent and responsible (as an only and oldest). I used to be more of a free spirit and I have a somewhat unique sense of humor like a middle. My little sisters are somewhat dependent as youngest. Someone is already to help them get where they are going and are a little more giving then they were with me.
5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child.
I think my favorite story is how me and one of my step sisters (we are very close. She was my first sister, before my halves were born) told my youngest sister she was adopted. We had a sister before who didn't do what we wanted, so we traded her in, and we would do the same thing to her if she didn't do what we wanted. At the same time, my dad always told us he was going to take us back to the baby store and trade us in for a goldfish. Poor thing, thought she was going to be traded in at any moment.
@AF9211 and @CatLadyTX I am suprised we are the only ones without siblings so far. I have always wanted more than one child. My father is an only child and my mother has one brother that she doesn't speak to. We never had much family around and that always made me sad. I am happy that DH has a big family. This is exactly my family! Except my dad has a sister (no kids or SO) that we haven't talked to in years because of their strained relationship throughout their entire life [she was actually my recovery nurse when I had my c-section with DD...talk about awkward] so I just call him an only child!
I think I would have been OK being one-and-done, but when it came down to it I really didn't want DD going through life without at least one person to have when me & DH start getting old/die. (morbid I know, lol)
@catladytx sometimes I've read your comments and thought "hmm...sounds like me!" Now I know why!
For the most part I think it has 5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child. Not sure its a favorite story, but I have a scar to prove it! My older sister and I were playing tug-o-war with a jump rope. She decided the game was over and I won so she left go of the rope. I went flying backwards and hit my head on the corner of the wall. My dad was the only one home and was freaking out since my mom was at the grocery store and I'm screaming bloody murder. (This was waaaaaay before cell phones!) So we had to wait til she got back to go to the ER. They put me in a straight jacket (no lie) and sew my head back together. I have a nice scar now on the back of my head
1) I have two siblings. A younger brother and an identical twin sister
2) I am the oldest by about a minute...and yes twin moms, they WILL keep track of this.
3) I do! My sister is my best friend and even though we live across the country we talk pretty much every day. My brother is 5 years younger so we didn't have much in common when we were little, but the older he gets the cooler he gets.
4) Oh definitely. Twins are notorious for maturing (emotionally and socially) later than singletons, so we were definitely late bloomers. And I think it was hard for my brother being a younger sibling of twins. He felt like everyone had a pair but him. But it led him to be super outgoing and fun because he wanted that extra attention. It was fun.
5) my sister and I switched classes in the 4th grade. The teachers never knew, but it was the day before we got out for Christmas holidays so they didn't care anyway whe we told them at the end of the day. Good times.
1) How many siblings do you have? 2 (3 if you count my mom's lovechild, who the rest of us didn't even know about until she told us on her 60th bday)
2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other? Middle but since my brother is 9 years older, I usually felt like the oldest, especially when he left for college.
3) Do you get along with your siblings? If you don't have any, do you wish you did? Growing up, my sister and I would usually get along. My brother was out of the house by the time I was 10, so there's not much to go on there. There is an old family video which he's filming of us opening presents/chatting, and he expresses his utter annoyance of me to our cousin. Yikes! Now that we're all adults, I'd say we get along fine, but we hardly ever see each other. She's in Chicago, and he's in Atlanta.
4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today? Since we're all adopted, I don't think it really applies. But I can say that being the oldest after my brother moved out did affect me. I'm a perfectionist and rule-follower (mostly).
5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child. My favorite time was our last family vacation to Canada to visit the girl who was in the same Korean orphanage as I was and her family. My brother even went with us. It was just so fun having him along, despite all the gnarly farts he'd let loose in the van. He would do magic tricks for my sister and me when we were bored, and I know my dad appreciated having another male along, instead of just my mom and two girls.
Adding mine then will go back and comment/read everyone else's:
How many sibs? 8 at my moms house (yes, at her house. Only one is old enough/responsible enough to live independently), and they are sibs of EVERY kind: Bio brother 29 Half brother 21 Half Brother 18 Adopted sister 17 (who now has a 1 month old son herself) Adopted brother 12 Adopted sister 10 Adopted sister 7 Adopted sister 6 (Possible) adopted brother (depends on a judge decision) 3 And 1 half sister by my dad 20 (Had a couple step bros there for a few years with dad wives #2 and #3)
Im the oldest (34)
Get along? Only grew up with the older boys, but they were so much younger than me, the 21 and 18 yo looked like they could have been my kids. Bio brother and I hated each other. He was a biter and I tried to smother and/or hide him as a baby, so maybe that's why.
Birth order make a difference? Probably. I'm stereotypical Tyle A, mature, responsible, motherly...
Story? When it was just me and my bio brother, him a baby, me a 5yo, my mom was visiting with a friend at our house. I had been left in the adjacent room with him and decided to hide him. Well, when they realized he was gone, I refused to tell them where he was and they looked for him for 45 min before they found him in the entertainment center. He just came along, all cute, and ruined the good "only child" thing I had going on! We get along alright now, we just don't have much in common, as he's kind of a loner, unmarried, no kids. But at least he tells me he loves me when we say goodbye!
Just 1 sister 2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other?
Youngest 3) Do you get along with your siblings? If you don't have any, do you wish you did?
Not really. We're completely different people so we butted heads a lot about everything. We get along much better now, but we're still very different. 4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today?
Definitely. We're 8 1/2 years apart so we both have some only kid tendencies also. Looking at the descriptions of how oldest/youngest kids are and mixing in some of the only kid traits, it's pretty spot on for us! Probably why we didn't get along much 5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child.
Hmm.. I'm blanking on good stories! I'll go with how she was always kinda like a third parent to me. She was always helpful when it came to projects, especially if they were artsy. One year she helped me make my Valentine's card box and it was awesome! We made this big boombox and I think the "CD" slot was where the cards went. She spent so much time and effort on something for me and looking back it was pretty cool that she did that. I would have won the contest but someone put one on a remote control car or something and apparently that was cooler!
2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other? I'm the youngest. We are 6 years apart.
3) Do you get along with your siblings? If you don't have any, do you wish you did? She's my best friend
4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today? Haven't really thought about that before...
5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child. We flew to Ireland for my sister's 18th birthday. The flight was about 16 hours altogether and by the time we stopped for an hour layover in England our legs were going numb so while new people were getting on the plane we decided to lay on the floor in front of our seats with our legs up in our chairs (This is one of those really nice 777 planes where the first class seats are far apart). People made weird faces at us but we didn't care. We had fun on that trip and its always been one of my favorite times with her.
I love my siblings! Actually have had my oldest younger sister living with us for the summer and loved it! (she's 18)
4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today?
Somewhat... 5 of the 9 of us are adopted (including me) so our personalities are very different, but most people don't even realize.
5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child.
Because there is a wide age range (25-4), I actually taught my younger brother to read. I loved that!
2. Middle child syndrome
3. My older brother and I are civil but not friendly we are very different people who don't get the other person I guess.
My younger brother and i get along but I am extremely hard on him (he is like 8 years younger) because he is very dependant on my parents and extremely lazy--is used to everyone babying him and I don't put up with it. My parents always ask if they can send him to my house for the summer, I have no tv, I would only allow him to use the internet for schooling (which I posted yesterday he has been in high school online for 6 years) and he would be expected to do farm chores. EVERY summer they asked and every summer he cried his way out of it because he knows I am a total hard ass and he wouldn't get away with anything. My parents did him no favors babying him and I don't get why they have such a hard time saying no to him--they never had trouble saying no to me and my older brother growing up. I sometimes wonder if its because he is my step dads actual child and not step children. Hes all around a good person, but he will probably never succeed without someone holding his hand every step of the way.
4. Yes, for me and my younger brother anyways, I was always kind of neglected (my parents never really paid too much attention since I was independent) and my younger brother is babied beyond belief. I remember him crying at Christmas because he only got 8 presents one year when my parents didn't have any money, I was 19 and appalled that my parents let him get away with that sort of stuff. But my mom always said she was tired--she already did the parenting thing once and argued with me and my brother so she gave in too much to my younger brother
5. When my and my older brother (16 mo. older than me) were about 6-7 we used to go stand out in hail storms with buckets on our head. Don't know why but we LOVED it.
1) 2 brothers
2) Middle child. Older brother is ten months and 14days older (irish twins!) younger brother is 4 year younger
3) Yes, we moved away from our huge new england family when we were 9,8,& 4, its been us against the world ever since. Older bro and I were basically twins. Though it wasn’t till college when little bro moved in with me that he became my person.
4) Totally, Older bro is the typical 1st born (read navy guy) over protective etc. Younger bro is the baby totally gets his way its actually comical.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
5) I clearly recall my mother asking my older brother and i if we wanted a sibling. We both just looked at each other and said NO and walked away. We've never let little bro forget that. Even now we’ll pull that card to make him buy us around of drinks.
2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other? Oldest
3) Do you get along with your siblings? If you don't have any, do you wish you did? we all get along
4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today? I am the only one married with kids, so yes in that sense.
5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child.I love being a part of a big family. There was never a dull moment in our house. I miss that when I go over there now.
4 sisters!
2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other?
I'm in the middle.
3) Do you get along with your siblings?
Yes, as adults we are all really close, growing up, not so much! But I think that is pretty normal!
4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today?
I do. At my dads I was the youngest and at my moms I was the oldest but overall I was in the middle (I know, so confusing!) So I feel like I got to have a taste of all of the different sibling roles and that has helped me have a better understanding of how it can be.
5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child.
My mom had to give my oldest sister up for adoption when she had her at 18 (not by her choice
1) How many siblings do you have?
Four Siblings
2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other?
I'm the second-oldest.
3) Do you get along with your siblings? If you don't have any, do you wish you did?
I do for the most part. My older sister is a little bit much sometimes, but overall we have a good relationship.
4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today?
Most definitely. I learned early on the weight of responsibility life hands us.
5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child
My older sister tried to kill me. Well, not altogether on purpose, but still. It all started one day when our parents got a new mattress. The new mattress was on their bed, and the old mattress was leaning up against the wall. You can see where I'm going with this. Being the adventurous 5 and 8 year old tomboys that we were, we decided that it would be great fun to scale the old mattress, and use the new mattress as a trampoline. We jumped happily back and forth between the two for about 30 minutes, when my sister decided she was too warm, and turned on the ceiling fan. Then she decided I was taking too long to jump, and pushed me into the rotating blades, knocking me unconscious and opening a giant gash in my forehead.
With the combination of gushing head wound, and unconscious me, she logically assumed I was dead and ran off to tell my dad, who was supposed to be watching us while mom was out shopping with my grandma. My mom came home to a trail of blood from their bedroom out the front door, and my bloody dress soaking in the laundry room sink. My dad isn't big on leaving notes, but apparently understood the importance of removing a blood stain before it set.
2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other? Only
3) Do you get along with your siblings? If you don't have any, do you wish you did? None, but I never really wanted it. My mom is an only child and my dad has 2 sisters and a brother, but NONE of them had kids until I was like 16.. so not only was I the only child -- I was the ONLY grandkid for YEARS. I was really a little adult from very early on.
4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today? Yeah, I think so. I think I am pretty independent because of it.
2) I'm the oldest between Brooke & I, but if you include Philip, Justin & Nicola, I'm the second youngest.
3) yes! I am really, really close to my bonus siblings...especially Nicola, who'll be the godmother of my child. Justin lives in London, so I don't see him very often, but we have a great relationship. Philip just moved back from holland, following a divorce, and we are becoming closer as we get older. However, my biological sister is on the lower end of the autism spectrum (and is entirely non verbal) so it's very difficult to have a relationship with her.
4) in my core family, it's the dynamic of being an only child because of my sister's disability. However, I had to sacrifice a lot of time & attention that most only children get (from my parents) because my sister (obviously) needs more care & attention. It made it really hard as a teenager when I was struggling with my own issues & they just didn't have the resources to really help me. However, I think that being an *only* child made me really independent & self sufficient. I also very much need my alone time to decompress.
Now, with my bonus siblings, I'm treated like the baby of the family. They tease me & my brother even gave me a swirly when I was younger. They are always there to give me advice & are very protective of me.
5) I just love every single Christmas when we are all together.
I'm jewish, my family is not.
1) How many siblings do you have? I have 4 siblings
2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other? Middle! (technically) I have 1 sister (birth mom's daughter) and 1 adopted sister I have met. Then 1 half brother and sister I have never met. I was adopted and my birth father left my birth mom when I was very young so I have never met his children. My sister just turned 15 and my adopted sister is 26.
4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today? I think so. I had the opportunity to be a part of both families my whole life. I am very close with my birth mother and sister. I am also very close to my adopted family and sister.
5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child. Honestly, my older sister tortured me my whole childhood. I don't have too many good memories of her. We used to clean the whole basement on Friday nights, set up a movie, pick a board game, lay out blankets and pillows, and our parents would make pizza and have family night. Every single Friday until we were about 15.
2) I'm the oldest
3) Yup. We have our arguments but they always work out.
4) definitely. It's obvious how our different personalities play into that.
5) Too many! But we used to love riding our play toys down the hill and we have many stories of crash and burn pileups.
2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other? I'm the middle child. 8-} But my brother is older and my sister is younger. We're each 3 years apart.
3) Do you get along with your siblings? For the most part. My brother and I are very alike. High IQs, very analytical and logical. My brother has no emotions whatsoever (but is the kind of robot who knows what human rules of etiquette are, so he mostly can stop himself from being overly offensive), and I tend to repress mine. My sister is all emotion and no logic. I still like her, but I have a hard time understanding her motivations when she acts in an illogical manner.
4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today? Definitely. I don't think I would be who I am today if I hadn't have grown up mostly playing with an emotionless, Type-A, must win at all costs older brother. I spent a lot more time playing Star Wars and Lego space battles than My Little Pony or Barbie. I mean, I did that stuff with friends, but at home I was always playing boy games. I didn't spend a whole lot of time with my sister. She was always an independent player.
5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Hard to think of just one. I ate a few big bites of a bar of soap once because my brother convinced me it was delicious. I mostly remember sitting in the cold, dark basement having the time of my life playing with our suitcase full of Lego. I'd help him find blocks to build spaceships with, and we'd build ships and houses and animals... we could Lego it up for hours.
One time my sister thought her and her friend could go down to the corner store for candy (they were four years old). The corner store was about seven blocks away. They got lost, and we (myself, my brother, my parents, and the girl's grandparents) spent a long time frantically searching for them. That was one of my biggest childhood impressions of my sister - her doing stupid things that made no sense. But she was always a sweet, caring child who was nice to everyone.
Monster Truck (It's a GIRL!) is due 19/02/2015!
1 sister
2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other?
I'm the youngest.. 18 months between us, one year apart in school
3) Do you get along with your siblings? If you don't have any, do you wish you did?
Heh... No. We have the most volatile relationship. One minute we are best friends and the next we don't get along. I'm sure some of you remember some stories. We are ok today but sadly I always have a "it's only a matter of time" mentality during the calm before yet another storm.
4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today?
Absolutely. Birth order paired with her immaturity, my maturity and our closeness in age doomed us. I wasn't allowed to have friends her age, couldn't like boys in the next grade up from mine, etc. Being that close in age, and the same sex but starkly different personalities (me positive and low-key, her high strung and stubborn) was and still is a tough battle for us. I love her... But she sure makes it tough
5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child.
When we are on, we have the best time. We had annual passes to Disneyland and though we went to different high schools (I'm not kidding that we need space from each other) she used to call the office as my mom and pick me up from my first class and we would go to Disneyland for the day and be back before our parents knew.
2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other? Middle
3) Do you get along with your siblings? If you don't have any, do you wish you did? Yes, we make each other crazy sometimes but we love each other and hang out when we can.
4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today? No
5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child. I broke my brother's arm and no one believed him! Poor guy! We were riding bikes and he crashed and I didn't see him in time and ran his arm over. He told my parents it was broken and they just laughed at him. It was really broken, like needed surgery broken. I felt awful, we joke about it now but every time I see the scar I feel guilty.
1) How many siblings do you have?
3
2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other?
#3 of 4, I am considered the middle child as the other middle child is the only boy in the family, somehow he was treated a lot different.
3) Do you get along with your siblings?
Didn't before, but now we're all adults living in different cities/countries, we seem to be a bit less awkward and are exchanging emails and we chat on messages daily/weekly.
4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today?
I think so. Being the stereotypical middle child with the infinite freedom and far stronger personality/independence, I felt the need to find my own path and left home at 17 to a completely different country without first telling anyone. My other siblings were too coddled to leave the nest until much later.
5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child.
My little sister is 7 years younger than me. I remember taking her to the park when she was a toddler to play on the swings. On some days, I'd spend my some of my savings on Mcdonalds fries to share with her on the way. She loved dipping fries into ketchup. She'd only do 1 at a time and then hold it up with the ketchup on top, say "candle!" with a huge smile on her face.
2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other? On my dad's side, I am in the middle but I am my mom's oldest and was raised that way.
3) Do you get along with your siblings? If you don't have any, do you wish you did? We get along for the most part. I haven't really fought with any of them since I moved out 5 years ago.
4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today? Definitely! For me at least, being raised as the oldest I am far more responsible...and a tad bossy haha!
5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child.When we were living on Maui, we took a boat over to Lanai for the day and there was a huge green sea turtle on the beach that we took pictures with. It was pretty amazing to share that with my siblings. We were 10, 8, and 5 I think at the time.
3) Do you get along with your siblings? If you don't have any, do you wish you did? Yup
4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today? For the most part I think it has
5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child. Not sure its a favorite story, but I have a scar to prove it! My older sister and I were playing tug-o-war with a jump rope. She decided the game was over and I won so she left go of the rope. I went flying backwards and hit my head on the corner of the wall. My dad was the only one home and was freaking out since my mom was at the grocery store and I'm screaming bloody murder. (This was waaaaaay before cell phones!) So we had to wait til she got back to go to the ER. They put me in a straight jacket (no lie) and sew my head back together. I have a nice scar now on the back of my head
1) I have two siblings. A younger brother and an identical twin sister
2) I am the oldest by about a minute...and yes twin moms, they WILL keep track of this.
3) I do! My sister is my best friend and even though we live across the country we talk pretty much every day. My brother is 5 years younger so we didn't have much in common when we were little, but the older he gets the cooler he gets.
4) Oh definitely. Twins are notorious for maturing (emotionally and socially) later than singletons, so we were definitely late bloomers. And I think it was hard for my brother being a younger sibling of twins. He felt like everyone had a pair but him. But it led him to be super outgoing and fun because he wanted that extra attention. It was fun.
5) my sister and I switched classes in the 4th grade. The teachers never knew, but it was the day before we got out for Christmas holidays so they didn't care anyway whe we told them at the end of the day. Good times.
2) Are you the oldest, youngest, middle, only, other? Middle but since my brother is 9 years older, I usually felt like the oldest, especially when he left for college.
3) Do you get along with your siblings? If you don't have any, do you wish you did? Growing up, my sister and I would usually get along. My brother was out of the house by the time I was 10, so there's not much to go on there. There is an old family video which he's filming of us opening presents/chatting, and he expresses his utter annoyance of me to our cousin. Yikes! Now that we're all adults, I'd say we get along fine, but we hardly ever see each other. She's in Chicago, and he's in Atlanta.
4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today? Since we're all adopted, I don't think it really applies. But I can say that being the oldest after my brother moved out did affect me. I'm a perfectionist and rule-follower (mostly).
5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child. My favorite time was our last family vacation to Canada to visit the girl who was in the same Korean orphanage as I was and her family. My brother even went with us. It was just so fun having him along, despite all the gnarly farts he'd let loose in the van. He would do magic tricks for my sister and me when we were bored, and I know my dad appreciated having another male along, instead of just my mom and two girls.
How many sibs?
8 at my moms house (yes, at her house. Only one is old enough/responsible enough to live independently), and they are sibs of EVERY kind:
Bio brother 29
Half brother 21
Half Brother 18
Adopted sister 17 (who now has a 1 month old son herself)
Adopted brother 12
Adopted sister 10
Adopted sister 7
Adopted sister 6
(Possible) adopted brother (depends on a judge decision) 3
And 1 half sister by my dad 20
(Had a couple step bros there for a few years with dad wives #2 and #3)
Im the oldest (34)
Get along?
Only grew up with the older boys, but they were so much younger than me, the 21 and 18 yo looked like they could have been my kids. Bio brother and I hated each other. He was a biter and I tried to smother and/or hide him as a baby, so maybe that's why.
Birth order make a difference?
Probably. I'm stereotypical Tyle A, mature, responsible, motherly...
Story?
When it was just me and my bio brother, him a baby, me a 5yo, my mom was visiting with a friend at our house. I had been left in the adjacent room with him and decided to hide him. Well, when they realized he was gone, I refused to tell them where he was and they looked for him for 45 min before they found him in the entertainment center. He just came along, all cute, and ruined the good "only child" thing I had going on! We get along alright now, we just don't have much in common, as he's kind of a loner, unmarried, no kids. But at least he tells me he loves me when we say goodbye!
3) Do you get along with your siblings? If you don't have any, do you wish you did? She's my best friend
4) Do you think your birth order played a role in who you and your siblings are as people today? Haven't really thought about that before...
5) Tell your favorite story from childhood that involves a sibling. Or just a favorite childhood story if you're an only child. We flew to Ireland for my sister's 18th birthday. The flight was about 16 hours altogether and by the time we stopped for an hour layover in England our legs were going numb so while new people were getting on the plane we decided to lay on the floor in front of our seats with our legs up in our chairs (This is one of those really nice 777 planes where the first class seats are far apart). People made weird faces at us but we didn't care. We had fun on that trip and its always been one of my favorite times with her.
