  • When I was pregnant with my almost 2 yr old.. I was contemplating staying home and I was looking into having a shop on Etsy.com.  I LOVE Etsy.  I ended up going back to work but here's a few things I did that were fun for me!

I made letters for her room.  I found pictures on pinterest that I really liked of letters that had tulle attached to them.. so it was like this really girly letter.  So I bought tulle at JoAnn's and I cut it into small circles. (ALOT of small circles).  I bought a glue gun.  I bought white letters. .just initials.  I glued the tulle to the letter and it turned out really cute and girly.  I have those hanging in her room.

I made tissue paper pom poms for her birthday party.  Those were fun. There are TONS of how to's online.  They sell those on Etsy ALLLL the time. In fact, I just bought some on Etsy actually.
I made a hair bow holder for her room that's really cute.  There's how to's online for that too.  I took an old picture frame.. painted it white.  The backing.. I covered with fabric that matched her room.  And then I bought lots of pretty coordinating ribbon and hot glued each end to the ends of the frame.  And then you clip the hairbows to the ribbon.. I had my hubby put hooks on the bottom of the frame so I hang headbands and necklaces and things like that on the hooks.  It's cute!

  • When I was pregnant with DS I learned to bake.  I did everything from fondant cakes to cake pops.  With DD I learned to sew..  Made smock dresses and quilts.  Now that I'm pregnant with my 3rd, I'm wondering what I'll do next!  I only feel creative when I'm pregnant. lol

  • Those are pictures I got on google. lol  The letters I made are purple. They were SOOO easy.  The bow holder was crazy easy and  I actually use it alot.  She has more bows then I know what to do with and I never lose them because they're all clipped to the bow holder and they're out of reach for her so she can't get into them.  It's great.

I loved the pom poms for parties too.  I made orange and pink ones last year for her party.  (she's the day before Halloween. )  This year I didn't have time so I ordered pink and gold ones on Etsy. I have to fluff them but they came premade.  I hang them above the kitchen table.  I have the ones from last year hanging in her room.  They were too cute to toss!

  • I am super crafty, when I wanna be!  Like @niknak1208, I've made tissue paper pom poms for all parties and I made a hair bow holder too! For my hair bow holder, I used a cheap canvas and hot glued the fabric/ribbon to it.  I wasn't clever enough to attach hooks for headbands, though! :) Great idea!  I may do that now cause we still use ours too.

I've also made many other things, but the easiest thing I've done is make door knockers for the different holidays using tulle.  All you do is buy a round styrofoam (I bought a heart one for Valentine's), some tulle and maybe a few embellishments.  You cut the tulle into several pieces and tie each piece around the ring.  Super easy and I got the idea from Etsy.  Those things sell for a pretty penny and I made mine for less $15-20!  This craft if something you can do while watching TV.  It takes time but it's pretty simple to do and would keep you from going bonkers!! :)  I'll see if I can find pics of the ones I made.

  • I would look on google. Some of my faves are tp roll crafts. You can do them for each holiday, theme and season, and the supply of...supplies is endless! There are always tp rolls around. Just get a block of colored construction paper, glue, some stick on google eyes, pipe cleaners, baggy of pompoms, etc and you can make trees in fall (leaves outside), witches for Halloween, turkeys or Pilgrims for Thanksgiving, reindeer, penguins or Santas for Xmas, etc etc... And they you don't have to feel bad about tossing that stuff... :) Here are our Xmas creations from last year.
  • Oops didn't attach.. Try again....
  • Here are Valentine's and Thanksgiving wreaths.

  • I also knit.  It's not hard to learn the basics, but it does take some practice and patience to get comfortable.  If you stick with, though, it's a wonderful hobby/craft, because you always have something useful when you're done.  I love to knit while I'm watching TV, too, because it makes me feel like I'm less wasting my time staring at the television, because I'm doing something productive at the same time.

  • Another knitter here! There are only two kinds of stitches to learn and then you can make anything. Right now I'm making a cardigan for DD. Tiny newborn hats in bulky weight yarn knit up quick .... Speaking of going home outfits!

  • Question for the knitters:
So I do knit, a bit. I made hats and scarves for DD and wven a little vest.
What is the best way to estimate how many times to cast for a hat??? I am always eyeballing it and it works ok but it's not perfect. I know it must depend on the needle and yarn thickness, but is there some shortcut way??
  • I'm so jealous!  I've never learned to knit or sew really.  lol My husband sews his own buttons on his pants and any bigger jobs get sent to his mom who is a professional seamstress.  But I always wish I knew how!

  • @harmonicbabe26 - the best way is to knit a guage swatch in the stitch pattern that you plan to use for the hat. So if you're using a 2x2 rib stitch, cast on a bunch of stitches and knit up a square in the 2x2 rib. Then you can count how many stitches per inch and calculate how many to cast on so that you end up with the right size. Of course, you should also measure the persons head, if possible, for the best fit.

That being said, I hate knitting guage swatches, and admit to frequently using the highly accurate "eyeball" technique myself.

Omg this is totally brilliant! I typically use the same set of needles and similar weight yarn so this should totally work!

Hee hee... Basically you make yourself a 'measuring stick' type of a strip and check how many rows (stitches) you will need for x number of inches of length of a final product. Say your baby has head circumference of 16 inches and you want to make a hat. If you have a little sample piece, and know that each 2 inches of product requires, say, 10 stitches, you can calculate how many total you need to cast on the needles. Totally making up the numbers btw. :)
  • harmonicbabe26 - Glad I could help.  Now we will definitely need to see pictures of the next hat you make so we can see how well it fits!   :D
