I would like to start a hobby but have no skills! Lol..anything you ladies know of I could do for DS and DD?

Met with RE 4/11. 2 IUI's BFN. DE best option. Switched clinics to do "shared" program. Had to retake all tests and a mamm that put me behind and then on a DE waiting list for 12 months. Picked a donor!! (10/13/13) Got matched. Estimated transfer in December. After 2.5 years of patiently waiting I will finally cycle....can hardly believe it. DE cycle got cancelled. One of her tests came back positive. Waiting for another donor. Donor picked!! (1/18/14)

I've also made many other things, but the easiest thing I've done is make door knockers for the different holidays using tulle. All you do is buy a round styrofoam (I bought a heart one for Valentine's), some tulle and maybe a few embellishments. You cut the tulle into several pieces and tie each piece around the ring. Super easy and I got the idea from Etsy. Those things sell for a pretty penny and I made mine for less $15-20! This craft if something you can do while watching TV. It takes time but it's pretty simple to do and would keep you from going bonkers!!

So I do knit, a bit. I made hats and scarves for DD and wven a little vest.
What is the best way to estimate how many times to cast for a hat??? I am always eyeballing it and it works ok but it's not perfect. I know it must depend on the needle and yarn thickness, but is there some shortcut way??
That being said, I hate knitting guage swatches, and admit to frequently using the highly accurate "eyeball" technique myself.

Hee hee... Basically you make yourself a 'measuring stick' type of a strip and check how many rows (stitches) you will need for x number of inches of length of a final product. Say your baby has head circumference of 16 inches and you want to make a hat. If you have a little sample piece, and know that each 2 inches of product requires, say, 10 stitches, you can calculate how many total you need to cast on the needles. Totally making up the numbers btw.
