Both my kids need winter coats, and I'd like something a little cuter than the basic puffer, but I don't want to spend an arm and a leg. I feel like I've checked out all the usual spots and am coming up empty. Last year, we had 3-in-1 coats from Carters and I hated them. It was too many different pieces.
my mom bought grant his coat this year and she got a whole set; coat and snow pants from old navy (which was a nice surprise - I am grateful that i don't have hunt for and buy one now)
Last year i got him his coat at one of the department stores during one of the many sales weekend that they seem to have every weekend! It was just a plain black coat, the brand was iextreme.
Cute, but are they warm enough for outside play in winter?
Here, yes. But I would say these make a good everyday running around winter coat. If they are going to be outside playing in snow, you will want something waterproof.
I have two coats in sizes 2t to 4t. All were found at garage sales in May and June. True story. She does have her Jordan coathe that was bought at Champs 2 seasons ago. Doesn't hurt to look second hand for a coat for school.
So I have a problem. I buy too many coats for my child. I buy too many clothes in general for him. For this year he has like 6 coats. Yup. I'm awful. 1 puffer from GAP kids, 1 3-in-1 from Children's Place, 2 fleece, a GAP Peacoat, and an off brand winter coat.
Keep in mind all were either on super sale or I got at a consignment shop (Once Upon a Child.) I like buying the name brand stuff but not at a new price

Gap has lined hoodies as well, but I wouldn't use that to play in the snow
For the boys this year, Colby has a fleece for the car that was a hand me down of keagans. He also has a one piece snow suit that was a hand me down from keagan. My mom bought keagan a 1 piece snowsuit online, and I found a waterproof type jacket at tjmaxx for the car. I actually meant to post a PSA about the jacket from tjmaxx, it was only $19.99 and was the same style as a puffer jacket, just with no puff! I'm super excited about it!
I like our Columbia fleeces and winter coats. We usually go to the outlet.
We also own a $5 Walmart coat that we bought after the season was over and it's made it through 1 1/2 winters and is now on a second child. I don't usually shop there, but that was a purchase that turned out pretty well. We use it more as a back up coat because it isn't quite as cute as our other ones, but keeps the kids warm.
I bought Grace's last year on clearance. Her snowsuit was a couple dollars from Babies r us. Nice church jacket from target. She has some fleeced and sweatshirts for car rides.
We got DS a navy blue puffer Timberland coat on clearance from BRU that he was able to use 2 years in a row. For this year, we got him a black & blue puffer Polo brand one at Marshall's. Hoping to get 2 years out of this one, too.
For DD, she had a white & pastel pink leopard print Carter's coat last year. She also has a fancier black & white houndstooth Osh Kosh coat that will still fit her this year. And one other plush pink coat with leopard print trim that my mom got from JCP, I think.
Just for future reference if anyone is interested - I got really nice puffer coats for A and C from Rothschild earlier this year (April maybe?) for a total of $38, including shipping. They were less than $15, but the retail prices were $60+. They have amazing end of season sales. If you sign up for their emails you'll get notified of the event. (Of course, they still fit in their coats from last year so we probably won't even need the Rothschild coats this year. Oh well... Hopefully they won't skip 3T entirely so we can use them next year.)
Re: Where do you shop for coats for LOs?
I did my shopping online for winter gear and took a chance.
I got Carter's at Target. It came in a set. It's not super puffy, but is good for -20* (?)
It's nice and long which we need for him.
