Thursday Randoms!

Re: Thursday Randoms!

  • Oh also random...

I'm making salsa today now that our septic system is fixed ($1100 and a new pump and 5 hrs later).

I hope the canned tomatoes I used are as good as the fresh ones I wanted to use, but don't have because the first tri bed rest rotted out a lot of my tomato vines when I wasn't able to keep up with the weeds.

  • My sister is in no way a bad mother, but she could definitely use improvement in a few areas, mostly due to ignorance on her part. My niece is teeny tiny, as in she's about to turn 7 and still wears toddler sized clothing. I always felt that my sister did not feed her well, meaning a diet high in junk, low in nutrients. This was confirmed when I weighed my niece last night. Since Sept 30th she's gained over 2lbs. She said she likes our food better.

  • welp the bad smelling breast milk comment just got rid of my hunger...yay? lol
  • Why is it so hard to wash your hands after you use the bathroom? I work with 3 other women. Two of them DO NOT WASH THEIR HANDS! How do I politely tell them that they should wash their hands? I want to ask HR to order a sign. It disgusts me!!!!!!! There are only two of us here today and I'm friends with her husband on FB and I keep wanting to post something about it on there so he'll read it and relay that information. I don't even want to know about the men's situation if 50% of the women don't wash their hands. There are 100 men here.

Take it to HR - they can order signs and not disclose who complained (will make it less awkward for everyone). That's one of the sad/weird things HR has to deal with sometimes.
  • @britb618‌ So sorry! I am surprised my stomach is still growling after his first bottle today. Definitely well past my nausea phase.

  • haha we're good @marvan5, I'm still eyeing my popcorn and will probably make it in 3.2.1....
  • so I love zulily, its part of my morning routine, at 9 a.m. pretty much on the dot I go on the site with my cup of coffee in hand and peruse all the sales. Most of the time I don't buy anything but when I do, its a bunch of stuff because you only pay one shipping fee for the day of shopping. Anywho, my husband and I JUST joined our bank accounts and credit cards. He never cared what I bought before because it never came out of his bank account (although most of time its stuff for my daughter so he shoulddd pay, right?) but now that we are joint I know he is going to call me the second I order something (because he checks accounts daily, weirdo!) I find it annoying...and with that I just pressed purchase for an adorable moose rocker that sings and I hope entertains my dd while I'm bfing her brother and a farm animal train set, and a happy hannukkah shirt and tutu and gold moccasins with fur on the inside for me during maternity leave :) one happy lady right now! (he better not ruin it with a phone call!)
  • Today I had the urge to see what Sriracha sauce would taste like on a glazed doughnut.

Needless to say, I didn't attempt it.

  • My belly button is starting to stick out ... AHHHH.

@Naturelovers I'm glad your niece is eating the healthy food and loving it! Hopefully she will be able to go home and ask her mom for more healthy meals. There's a great program where I live that teaches kids about nutrition/simple cooking and studies have shown that when kids are invested in eating healthy (understand how nutrition affects their body) they ask their parents for better food. :)
See, my sister has a horrible diet and refuses to touch anything green or healthy, so I doubt my niece asking for better stuff will make a difference. She just doesn't care about eating decently. She lives on chicken, bread, rice, and then an endless stream of junk/fast food, soda and candy. All the lectures in the world made zero difference. She fed my niece the same diet, so I assumed my niece was a picky eater too. We've been pleasantly surprised to find she eats veggies, salad, all kinds of meat, and stuff I never thought a kid would eat like tofu, cilantro, peppers, etc.

I find it interesting that my niece gained weight considering that her diet overall is probably a bit lower in calories with us. For her lunch her Mom would pack her ham n cheese on white bread, Doritos and Cheetos, cookies, Yoohoo, a pudding, etc. I pack her peanut butter on wheat bread, 100% juice, banana, grapes, yogurt, pretzels, and only two cookies. Whatever is left over she eats for a snack when she gets home. Dinner with my sister was Mcdonalds, leftover pizza, cereal, the usual junk. I try to feed her a balanced dinner with protein, veggies, and milk.

I didn't realize how poorly my sister was feeding her. It makes me sad.

Totally annoying to be questioned on your purchases - that would drive me insane. Have you told him how you feel?

That being said, though, it's a really good habit that your DH checks the accounts every day because if there is something fraudulent he'll catch it. We've had some fraudulent activity on our credit cards before and if DH didn't check them regularly we wouldn't have known.
  • @luckylady18, he doesn't actually give me crap about what I purchase, he just asks, did you buy something on this site-so yea he is checking for fraudulent stuff, I just feel like I have a tale between my legs when he asks because I PROBABLY didn't need to buy said item. I'm just not used to having to answer (explain) my purchases to anyone since I was in college and had my moms cc. So its weird I guess.
  • @MusicFanatic, I hope this isn't offensive...I have a random question. I know you get annoyed with questions about Chinese food, but this is Polynesian food.

Is Polynesian sauce like this authentic? Of course this fast food version with a French fry dipped in it is probably not.

I get so annoyed with places calling something "Thai" just because they add some peanuts and cilantro, so I'm wondering if this is a similar situation.

I'm not offended by real questions :)
@Maebb- that is absolutely not authentic in ANY shape, way or form.  Is that chick-fil-A's Polynesian sauce? That's kind of like.... a ploy to get more people there, or something. Or just a mix of weird ingredients they put together that they think will taste good and slap the word "Polynesian" on it to attempt to cater to a wide variety of people.  There is no "Polynesian" sauce in Hawaii like that. There are sauces, of course.. marinades- what have you. There's no specific Polynesian sauce- especially in a white tub.

My mother has a sauce she uses on meats- it's a mix of spices (pepper, salt, ginger, red pepper, garlic), pineapple juice, soy sauce,. brown sugar  She uses that pork and chicken. I suppose it could be put in a plastic tub and you could dip fries in it :P

Whatever a fast food joint serves and labels as Polynesian, however, is really not.

    *edited because I can't spell.

Edited to add again... food you get in the food court from a Japanese place is nothing like what we would eat in Japan.. along the same lines. Same as Chinese food. It's very Americanized in the USA. (and Canada).

  • I forgot this earlier-
I totally had weird pregnancy dreams last night. First, I dreamed that right after I gave birth, I agreed to be a surrogate for a woman at work (who is really weird), so I was carrying her baby for her. Creepy.
Then we got woken up because of the carbon monoxide detector situation....
Then I FINALLY fell back asleep and that's when I dreamed that I was breastfeeding a few of the babies from this board. I don't remember whose babies they were, but there were at least 3 people I was helping out. Creepy!!!!

I've been having a lot of breastfeeding dreams though. I think I'm very nervous about being able to do it right.
  • @saiven - dreams are soo weird. At least you had good sex though! I was pregnant AGAIN! :)

@luckylady18 I think we might be sort of the same person today because my cat was up all anxiety-meowing (like your dog) and she wouldn't stop until I held her like a baby.
Weird! That's cute though about holding her like a baby!
Lucky has been up 2 nights in a row freaking out. 2 nights ago was about a storm. Last night was the low battery beeping on the carbon monoxide detector. I think we need to talk to the vet about a solution to these middle-of-the-night fiascoes.
  • i totally forgot to take something out of the freezer for dinner until like half an hour ago, so i don't think it'll thaw in time.

i'm secretly hoping SO will volunteer to go get us some pho.  (speaking of americanized ethnic food, lol.  although, SO's dad did two tours in vietnam and claims that this place is pretty good for authenticity, although not spot-on.)

  • I've been trying to find a few maternity shirts for winter (last time around and due end of March I still fit my non-maternity stuff for most of the winter, so it's a gap in my wardrobe).  Why are all of them like 3/4 length?  Sometimes I WANT the warmth of a full sleeve.  O_o

Due to my PICC line, wearing anything long sleeve is very difficult. No clue what I'm gonna do when it gets cold.

Ugh that's a whole new problem I didn't even think about pregnant women needing to address.  :(  I wonder if you can turn that into a business.  "Maternity clothing with access for PICC lines."

I despise 3/4 length sleeves - I would much rather push up a long sleeve shirt.  But yet all of my maternity shirts....3/4 length

  • i'm the opposite.  long-sleeved shirts are never quite long enough, and it annoys me to push them up and have them falling down all the time.  i actually prefer 3/4 sleeves.  maybe that should be in the UO thread?  lol

  • @MusicFanatic‌, thanks for your answer about Polynesian sauce! Yes, I think that picture is CFA. There's another brand in the grocery store that is similar. Bright red color, and the first ingredient is high fructose corn syrup.

After eating real Thai food for 2 years and visiting Hawaii and Hong Kong and having authentic food, I really wish they didn't make everything bland and sweet for the "Americanized" version. I guess people must like it, but I like the real stuff (mostly. Chicken feet and things like that, no).

    Your mom's sauce sounds good!

@Longcat07-- I sometimes have this problem, too.  And then I'll take 3/4 length over like "an inch from where my wrist is," but if something is knit, I stretch the hell out of it making it long enough in the sleeves.  haha

I prefer the real and authentic foods, too. Not only do they sweeten everything in America to cater, they deep fry a lot that shouldn't be. You'd be hard pressed to find general tso's chicken in China.  Then again, I guess if there's no catering less people would likely eat it.  A better mix would be a nice compromise.   But I settle for that when I'm home and cook it myself ;)
