Re: WORLD SERIES

  • Loading the player...
  • Why do they call it a "World Series"? Isn't it just American teams?

And the opposite for the "National Hockey League" - there are both American and Canadian teams in it.

MLB (Major League Baseball) isn't just American teams. The Blue Jays won the World Series in '92 and '93 ;)

And we won't let anyone forget it :)

I've actually been to the World Baseball Classic- that was teams from around the world mostly made up of MLB players. Amazing experience.

Obviously, I am not a baseball fan. No idea what city the Blue Jays are from, but I'm gonna assume Canada.

  • DH and I are HUGE Giants fans. They won the National League Pennant (to advance to the World Series) on our wedding night in 2010. In 2012 they won as we were closing on our first house, and this year they're going to win right before LO is born. We always have amazing stuff going on in lives when they are going to the World Series! :) My coworkers already told me we have to have another baby in 2016 to keep the streak alive.
    LOVE IT!!

  • I'm rooting for the Royals..they've played amazing in the postseason.  Plus, I still have bitterness against the Giants from the Rangers' loss in the 2010 World Series. They totally kicked our booties & won fair & square..I'm just a sore loser.  Still.

According to my sports writer husband, it's been called the "World Series" since the early 1900's when baseball was mostly played in North America. He thinks it was a ploy to get the sport more attention.

Back then, you also didn't really have teams from all around the world. So, to answer your question, it sounds like it's still called the World Series because of tradition. But the MLB certainly isn't the only place to play anymore for the world's best baseball players.

And there you go - more knowledge than anyone ever probably wanted to know. Pass me some nachos!

  • I picked that I don't care and pass the popcorn and nachos.  I'm ok with either team winning but maybe I'll cheer on the Royals just because they are the underdogs

  • I'm in central missouri, more part of Cardinal nation (STL). We were really hoping for another i-70 series (KC vs STL). Since the cards totes sucked post season, we will be cheering on the royals! Always proud of any missouri team :-)

  • I am making nachos because of the power of suggestion, ladies. Thank you!

Oh and I am rooting for the Giants. I live in SF. I am equally excited about the Giants as the nachos, so that's saying a lot.

  • I don't really care either way- were Rangers fans but I'm going for the Royals.. Why? Because my hubby said so haha! :)
  • I should be rooting for the Giants since I am from the Bay Area.  As a die-hard A's fan I feel like the Royals are just so similar to my team so I can't root against them!  Plus the Giants have won 2 World Series in the past 5 years and I'd like to see someone totally new who hasn't won in a LONG time win it!

True...but they'll have plenty of opportunities to get more in like 5 years from now!  LOL!

I really wouldn't mind if the Giants won, and I'm not REALLY rooting for either team.  I just think it would be nice for the Royals to have a little success :)  They haven't even been to the playoffs in like 30 years!

  • @wildflower75 - we aren't the sentimental miSFit favorites anymore. We won't be convincing anyone who doesn't have SF love to root for them.

But I'd rather be the dominant "building a dynasty" team than the "lucky" team that "deserves" to win because it's been too long. The Giants have worked incredibly hard for where they are today and actually do deserve to win.

  • *********** Lol, I think you "deserve" to be a hot mess sometimes during the third tri ;-) Have a blast at the game! I'm super jealous. I was supposed to be at the game last night, but the LO had some other plans. I'm fine and the baby is still inside for now, but he/she got an early start to ruining all my fun!
I'm sorry about LO not cooperating! We'll see how my LO does. I mentioned that they have ambulances at the game to my dad, in case I go into labor over too much excitement. His response, "Well, labor takes a while. If that happens, might as well just enjoy the game to kill some time." Lol thanks, Dad! ;)
Happened in KC for game 1!  She decided not to stay and had the baby at midnight.

Crazy! And smart move on not staying. If the giants play like they did last night when I go tmrw and I go into labor, I'm thinking I'll have little patience to stick around.

I think it's a total cop out to say that any team that makes it to the world series is there by luck. Obviously, I'm a Royals fan, but a team that makes it through their respective championship series and wins enough games against the other teams that made it that far deserves to be there.

I suppose I also think that whoever wins the World Series deserves that as well. No team gets there without working hard and winning a 7 game series in a sport like baseball is never just luck.

Agreed I hate the luck argument, too. I take it back! I think I'm more annoyed by the "deserving it bc they haven't won for 29 years" argument. I'm also bitter bc I always love the underdogs in these big games.

So to summarize, I'm just a hot mess of contradictions tonight.
    :-/

Also, my dad just called and he's taking me to game 3. It's also my birthday on Friday - I'm so excited!

Your wish came true - boo! If only tonight's game had happened LAST night instead. Oh well!

On a positive note, I did not give birth in a stadium bathroom. Mini win? :-bd
