I just read this really interesting article about the automation of retail workers' scheduling and the impact on single moms. I had no clue that this was happening. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/08/13/us/starbucks-workers-scheduling-hours.html
This is interesting for sure. I think you run into like problems in any organization that relies on heavy top-down strategies. If the higher-ups loosen the reigns a little, they do open up to the risk of lost revenue due to human error, but sometimes the individuals "on the ground" are better at allocating resources than any "magical" computer program. I support any business who strives to maximize profits, but I also see lots of room for improvement when it comes to employee morale in many cases.

I have a lot of feelings about top-down structures.

When did you sister work at Starbucks, @uconnhuskie007‌? I don't think it's the fault of one retailer in particular, but rather the reliance on a computer and data to generate unpredictable and unreliable worker schedules. I can't imagine having to scramble around every few days to find transportation and childcare.
She's worked there over the last 4 years at two different locations.  She lives several hours from me, and her colleagues and managers have become her pseudo-family.  She also works at Trader Joes, another retailer.

I'm curious to ask her now about scheduling and how it works at her location.  I do know her schedule changes, but that her preferences are often accommodated (for example, she prefers to work the opening shift at 4AM, because her now fiance works as a sous chef, and works afternoons and nights).  From what she's told me, they've always been extremely accommodating, and try to remain consisent.  I imagine the culture at different stores impact employees perception of how scheduling is done, but I really can't speak to it beyond what she's told me.
My H works for TJs and they use this automated scheduling but they do take into account his availability (he has to turn in some form or something that sets his available hours) and his schedule is very consistent. He always has the same 2 days off in a row unless he requests something different and he always works the same shift. As someone who used to have to write retail schedules I think I would have liked to have a tool that helped with that because it always used to get out that whomever wrote the schedule gave their 'favorites' all the best shifts. Now with all that being said, I didn't read the article because work internet has it blocked so feel free to ignore my opinion.

  • I don't know what to do about lunch.  I should go home and eat something there probably, but I really don't want to.

  • So, this dude on Tinder has worked in DC for many years. He's currently in TX watching a friend's kids (apparently he travels between NM and TX a lot? It seemed weird). Anyway, he offered to meet up with my DS and me for a playdate.

I am so clutching my pearls at this offer. He sent me a link to his FB and to his OK Cupid profile, I guess so I could e-stalk him and make sure he's not an RSO or something, but how does he know I am not a fucking psycho? Just because I have tits and a vagina doesn't mean I am harmless to bring around SOMEONE ELSE'S KID. What an idiot.

  • I just overheard my 2 coworker "friends" talking about me, and I'm sitting in my office shaking because I'm either really pissed or really upset, or both.  I can't figure it out.
Bitches! Sorry that happend. I've been there and it is shitty.

  • I want to paint my entire house this color.

My entire house is that color.  And strangely, my bedroom kind of looks like this.  I couldn't find any other color that I like, so my house is pretty boring.

Other than my hideous pink tiled bathroom.

  • Oh, I would never take my kid around a newbie anyway. I don't play that game. Hell, I don't even show them pictures. I'm mostly upset he would take that risk with another person's kid.

I have blocked people for asking too many questions about my kid upfront. If you're opening with asking age, name, etc, you are not going to get far with me.

  • Anyone know where I can get cute wide calf boots? I'm short and have big calves but I want cute boots.

I don't feel like reading this whole thread to see if this question has been answered.  I wear Steven by Steve Madden boots...Intyce and Inspirre both fit my large calves.

Thank you. I Live the Inspire ones and the reviews say the shaft is huge. TWSS.

  • The past few days Evelyn's poops have started to smell bad. I know, poop usually smells bad, but this is horrific. Like "oh my God what has died". So bad the dog leaves the room when she poops, and he rolls in stinky things. I've never smelled poop quite like it.

Is this something I need to worry about or is it just my anxiety making me stress about the stink level of my baby's shit?
