If you could spare some positive energy ...

Hi ladies, I know it's been a rough week or two around here w a lot of prayer requests, but if you could spare a moment and send out some positive vibes my way it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm 25 weeks along today with my 4th pregnancy. I suffered w some pretty gnarly looking varicose veins and bad swelling during the end of my last pregnancy, and found that the veins returned much quicker this time. Over the weekend my ankle blew up like a balloon and the veins are so bad they are starting to develop sores. I also have it pretty bad on my right leg too, even though last time that one wasn't really a problem. Naturally I showed my OB at my already scheduled appointment this morning ... She audibly gasped when I pulled up my pant let and said, 'I'm really surprised you're so calm knowing it looks like this.' Ummmm, ok! She's sending me to a vascular specialist to consult in an hour & to have a Doppler done of my lower extremities.

I'm really nervous, but trying not to freak out too much since I did have a leg ultrasound done w my last pregnancy and they didn't find clots. But that was 35 or so weeks along, not 2nd trimester like I am now. Plus, it's much worse looking this time. Icing on the cake is that my husband left on a business trip last night so I'm by my lonesome (family all live out of state) and will be bringing my 1 year old and 5 year old to the appointment and rushing home to get my 6 year old off the bus along w the other girl I watch in the mornings and afternoons.

Just feeling a little scared and wanted to share. Anyone have experience w this? Thanks in advance, F15!

  • I never had this problem, but I guess my mom did when she pregnant with me. If I can remember right she was told to stay off her feet as much as possible and keep her leg elevated. She also wore a compression stocking. My dad was a pretty bad husband at the time, and there was 3 of us under 4 so I'm not sure how well she was able to "keep it up". I'm really hope that it's nothing to serious to you and that you are okay!! I will keep you in my prayers!

  • Glad things seem manageable right now, though probably still annoying! Hope things resolve quickly for you, and stay off your feet!! (Of course, I need to take my own advice...) - I'm also always so on the go, and I swear my body has been all "screw you lady! I'm making you slow down whether you want to or not!" But I have definitely benefited from taking a step back and taking care of myself a little bit more. And I have a little experience with varicose veins: my mom actually had very bad varicose veins that never went away (developed in her 1st pregnancy, went away in one leg, then came back, worse, the 2nd pregnancy and never went away). She never had issues with them, just somewhat unsightly - called them her bunches of grapes. It was a few years ago that she started having circulation issues and developing random sores on her shins/knees. She finally had a medical reason to remove them (insurance would not have covered the removal unless medically necessary). If you do end up having to get them removed, the surgery is not invasive at all and I think the healing was rather quick too. My mom had to wear compression type socks for a couple weeks, and a couple of days following the procedure had to keep her legs elevated. Her legs look fantastic now - you would never know she had them! And any issues she was experiencing were resolved. Good luck!

Well this is very good to know, thank you for sharing. A selfish part of me, now that I'm out of the woods scare-wise, is starting to wonder what in the world I'm going to do about these veins if they don't go away after baby ... Glad to hear it all worked out for your momma and it wasn't invasive!
