Pregnant after IF

Fluvirin

Has anyone taken this brand of flu shot? (single dose brand) I can't find much about it online, but one site said it may contain mercury. (???)

Saw my OB today and he said it's fine to get it, but holy cow, I really don't want to.  My anxiety is at record high levels.

Re: Fluvirin

  • I just read through the PDF for prescribing info and it looks like it depends on which one you get.
The prefilled syringe contains no preservative, but it does state thimerosal (Mercury derivative) is used during manufacturing & removed during purification steps (<1 mcg of mercury per 0.5ml syringe)
The multi-dose vial does contain thimerosal as a preservative. Each 0.5ml dose contains 25mcg of mercury.
The flu shot I got was preservative free. If your Drs office doesn't offer this ask your local Target Pharmacy. They should have it.

  • Just make sure you ask for the one that is thimerosal-free. Most pharmacies should have it. I just went to the CVS clinic, told the pharmacist I needed the one that was safe for pregnancy, and he made sure to give me the one without mercury.

  • @milagros315 Dang if I can't find a pharmacy that has FluZone.  The Fluvirin seems to have trace amounts of mercury, which is offered by my Walgreens.  My Target has Fluarix, which claims to be mercury-free, but is quadrivalent---and I'm not really sure if that's a good or bad thing.  :p

If I weren't a teacher I would feel so much more comfortable forgoing the whole thing, but my students are so germy...

  • I just went to my pharmacy and said I needed the flu shot and I was pregnant. My paperwork says fluvirin. I would trust the pharmacist over Dr Google.
    Fucking bump!!!!

@Pintobean39 You're right.  I just found a super helpful pharmacy tech at a second Target I called who told me that the Fluvirin is actually on Target's paperwork as recommended for pregnant women.

I have read mixed things about the quadrivalent thing, but it makes me feel better talking to someone who actually knew what I was talking about and could tell me what was on their actual corporate paperwork!

  • The mercury content is less than in a few bites of tuna.  It isn't a worrisome amount, but if you prefer to avoid it all together, the mercury free ones are generally available.

And yes, you can do the quad rather than tri as a pregnant lady.  You just can't do the live virus nose spray vaccine.
