The registry?

We started thinking about our registry and I'm totally overwhelmed with the options. How do you even choose where to register much less what to register for?!
We know we want to cloth diaper and we'll probably get some of big stuff from family. But there's so much more.
For second time moms how did you choose which stores/sites to use? And is there a good checklist for everything you need?
I know it's a little early, but I'm a planner!

Re: The registry?

  • I'm a huge planner, too, so I get it.  For CDs, I would lurk on the CD board for awhile.  I ended up getting most of mine on Amazon,  Green Mountain, and Nicki's Diapers, but there are a bunch of great sites.  I think this is the thing you should research the most, because there are so many styles and options depending on your expectations and lifestyle.  I'd wait til Thanksgiving to get them because there are great sales.  Or troll Craigslist if you don't mind used.

Everything else is largely opinion as far as strollers, car seats, swings, cribs, etc.  I do tend to stay away from Babies R Us and Buy Buy Baby because, at least in my area, they seemed to be a lot more expensive for the same products carried by Amazon, Target, and (gasp!) Wal-Mart.

There's a checklist on here somewhere and a ton on Google.  But honestly, you'll just figure out what works for you.  Some (me!) swear by swings, but some don't use them or their babies hate them.  Some love carriers and wraps, others don't.  Your first baby is definitely going to be a learning experience!

    Congrats and good luck!

  • I found Lucie's List and baby gear lab very helpful. I'm going to register on Amazon bc of the universal registry and their completion discount. I also want to CD and am planning on Bum genious Freetime AIO.

I second looking at Lucie's List. It helped me a lot with #1, and has helped me when researching double strollers and baby carriers for #2.

I registered on Amazon, Target, and Walmart with #1. I used the Amazon one for myself, as a checklist of items I wanted/liked. I used Walmart and Target for my baby shower/gift list. I figured it was easier for people to access it at those two stores.

  • There are a ton of lists on Pinterest as well. We registered at bru and target. Honestly bru had everything we needed, but target is easier to get to and more convenient for people (especially for those without kids). DH and I just went in bru and went up and down all the aisles. It probably took us over 2 hours to do it. I also went back and edited my registry online a lot before we actually at the shower. It was nice to get a base then add when you figure more out
  • We registered at BRU and Amazon. I much preferred Amazon's registry, and I love shopping on Amazon anyway, but I knew some people would prefer to go to an actual store, especially parents, aunts, grandmas, etc. I used Lucie's list as a guide, and I also used my Amazon list as a running checklist, even long before we made our registry public (you can set it to private). Every time I would hear someone recommend something, I'd open up Amazon on my phone and add it quickly, and then go back later and research stuff to narrow down my list.

With DD, I did Babies R Us and Target. I didn't have a problem with either.  I did a lot of price matching and put the cheaper option on my registry. (IE, my bottles were $60 at BRU, but only $50 at Target, so it went on the Target registry) I'll be doing a registry again at BRU, but it will be kept secret and I am only using it for the completion coupon.
