My sister just texted me to tell me she's going to forward face my nephew (18 months) because his legs are too long and she's worried he'd break them in an accident.

Any help on what to tell her or suggestions for her? I know she wanted to make it to two.

  • She said this 'I actually talked to a firefighter today (who was car seat certified) who said if he's legs are long enough to curl up on the seat it's actually more dangerous then forward facing. He's more likely to break his legs backward then get injured forward.'

There is no way he was car seat certified if he said that. There have been zero studies that have found RFing kids to have a higher chance of leg injury. And even if they did, would she rather risk breaking her kids legs or internal decapitation? A childs is 75% more likely to die or sustain serous injuries in a crash if FFing before two.

  • @sweettooth87‌ I was surprised by the statement. I did tell her that broken legs are better than broken neck.

Yeah he's of his rocker and gave you're sister terrible advice. Have her join Car Seats for the Littles on FB and ask her question there with a picture of his legs.

  • @sweettooth87 we are on the same page. I had already sent her this link. https://csftl.org/rear-facing-car-seat-myths-busted/.

yeah I know you get it, it just really sucks someone of authority would give her such crappy advice.

  • Can you tell her to ask her pediatrician?  Mine told me rear face until at least 2.  I think I'll probably do it longer, but maybe your sister's pediatrician can set her straight?

  • Ugh!! My 2.5 year old is literally off the charts on height. She wears 4t jeans and we don't have to roll up the legs. She is still rear facing and will be until it is no longer safe (according to our car seat manual) for her to do so.

There is zero evidence to support anything that the fire fighter told her. Also, it is a myth that fire fighters are automatically car seat experts. Many of them have no training and are not certified. It is a total crapshoot--and I have seen some horrible instals done by random fire stations.

Unfortunately, many pediatricians are not up to date on this information. She needs to talk to a certified car seat tech.

  • Ugh...yes forward facing to a minimum of 2 now! Children's spines are not strong enough at that young of an age. And any broken leg is better than dead due to a spinal cord injury.

Car Seats for the Little has a very strong FB page and website. I learned so much by just following their page! Unfortunately it's not law yet for the 2 year age, but is the recommendation.

Also on their site they have many picutres of even older, taller kids rear facing up to like 4 and 5!!!
