Anyone with Symphisis Pubis Dsyfunction delivered yet?

So I searched for SPD and found some helpful stuff but the most recent was May. I was just recently told that I had SPD (a week or two ago) and it wasn't too bad at the time. Painful but bearable. Yesterday I fell backward off my porch steps and landed on my bum and back. (That's another story but baby seems to be ok, thank goodness!) Ever since I fell the SPD pain is so much worse. I can't climb into my bed, walking sucks, and I can't lie down on my side. I slept in the rocking chair last night because the pain of my legs and weight on top of one another when I'm on my side is excruciating. I also can't lift my legs high enough to put a pillow between them. So sleeping sitting up is the best solution that I have come up with. Anyway I saw some of the exercises that were posted in old threads and I read that seeing a physical therapist could help too. These are definitely things I will do next time but my concern is that I'm already 3 days past my EDD. So I may not have time for much.

So I guess what I really want to know is, what is it like to deliver a baby with SPD? My first was a med free vaginal delivery and that was the plan this time too. But with this much pain already I'm pretty terrified of what it will feel like to add labor and delivery pain on top of that. Anyone with SPD delivered yet? How was it and do you have any suggestions?

  • I don't have SPD, but last week I fell and landed on my butt. I went to a chiropractor and it has made everything better. I was having trouble getting in and out of bed cause of the pain. You might try seeing one.

  • I have had it since week 35 and it sucks - sympathies!  I was told it doesn't change delivery much, other than that an epi can make it worse afterwards since you can't feel if you're in a bad position during delivery and could mess it up more as a result of your positioning.  I was recommended that I not have one if I can help it, and that I try not to get into squats or lie on my side much during labor/delivery.

  • @Tabithahaileyc‌ I'm sorry to hear you fell too! Definitely scary when pregnant. That's a good suggestion about a chiropractor. I might try to call one today and get an appointment.

@archi35‌ Thanks for letting me know! I didn't think about how at least the pain will let me know a position is bad. I really don't want long term problems from this. I was fine without an epidural last time so hopefully this on will be the same. I will remember the suggestion not to squat or be on my side too. Thanks!

  • I've had this for about a week or two. I had no idea what it was, but it came on all of a sudden. I even emailed my doc, and they just said "it's normal with second plus pregnancies" and to take Tylenol. I even mentioned it to a float doc at my 38 week visit, and nothing. I hope it doesn't make delivery any more difficult than it will already be!

  • I had it since about midway through pregnancy. Like you, I was also worried of how it would impact my birthing experience but I don't really think it did. I had a much shorter labor this time around than with DS, and I think that made everything more intense as a whole, but I didn't really notice anything from my SPD and the best thing is that as soon as I gave birth, it mostly went away. Baby will be a week tomorrow and I still have some hip soreness and while I'm not sure what it's from, I think it's probably from having SPD for so long. I had 3 episodes during pregnancy of extreme pain for about 3 days where I could hardly walk or move around but those resolved themselves after a few days. Hope you feel a lot better soon!

  • @vrj0522‌ That is a relief to hear! I'm really glad that you don't think it impacted labor and also happy to hear that it's pretty much gone now. Fingers crossed we're all able to say that!

  • I didn't/don't deal with this, but my sister developed in at about 37 weeks with her second.  She was able to have an uncomplicated vaginal birth.  I know she did have an epidural.  It was her second birth, so I don't know if that had any bearing on it, and I think she pushed for 15 to 20 minutes before my niece came out, so I don't know what it would do if you ended up pushing for a really long time.  Like you she was sleeping in a chair at the end because of her discomfort.  I felt so badly for her, and those of you dealing with it now, she was in such pain.  I'm sorry you're going through this.  Sidebar: does falling have anything to do with this?  My sister fell on her butt later term in her pregnancy as well.

  • Wow! What a timely post!! I *think* I have developed this after pregnancy/labor. I gave birth on Sunday October 12 (so one week + one day ago) and the past couple days I have noticed a little pain, slowly increasing, in my pelvic area. I know it's not internal because it felt like my bones were hurting, or as if I had been bruised (like I went horseback riding). I just looked it up today and it seems (thanks, Dr. Google) that this is exactly what I have. And now that I'm aware of it, the pain seems more intense. :(
