Baby Camera/monitor

I was really excited for the Summer Infant Baby Zoom WiFi monitor, the camera itself is awesome and I wanted to use the app and like that the camera moves. The camera won't connect to our wifi and the app keeps going wonky when trying to use it. So I am curious what monitors you have got or like, my husband and I are currently researching online. I would prefer one where the camera is battery operated and rechargeable, but unsure if it exists.

Re: Baby Camera/monitor

  • I am returning it. I really spent the extra money for the WiFi feature it is a $260 monitor, I can get the same features without spending the exorbitant amount I am all for it. Plus after reading reviews of paying customers, not the ones who received it free to try, I think it is a waste.

  • The WiFi having should only be an issue if your wifi is unsecured, id imagine.

Feel free to ignore my tinfoil hat wearing ideas, but haven't there been some incidents with those wifi/app moniters getting hacked into? I definitely don't want live stream of my baby and my house connected to the internet. We're planning on getting a plain old video monitor, but I'm not sure what kind yet.

There have been, but with this particular camera and app you have to scan the particular code on the bottom of the camera. So I am not sure how easy it would be to hack, plus I think most instances of hacking was from nearby. A person would have to be hiding in the woods or in our driveway.

  • I just read, they are hacking ones where the wifi password is default.
  • I'm using dropcam instead of an actually baby monitor. I have it already and use it as security camera. https://www.dropcam.com

  • We bought the D-link.  It's also Wifi.  Haven't used it yet, but it has pretty good reviews.

  • I have a sound monitor and also the Mimo. I can't wait to try the Mimo out.

  • To the dropcam peeps - DH really wants this, but I am hesitant. If it works through an app on your phone/iPad...what happens when your phone goes to sleep? Do I have to keep constantly doing my 4-digit log-in and then opening the app look at or - more importantly - hear my kid? I can't seem to find the answer to that online. Not sure we'll go with it anyway - that particular bedroom is sort of a wifi dead spot in our house. I am pushing for a plain old sound monitor, but DH thinks the techier, the better.

  • Long before I was TTC, I saw a couple on a date with an iPad on the table and the iPad was clearly connected to a video monitor on the crib at home, which they glanced at occasionally.  It's not for everybody, but I decided right then that I wanted a wifi equipped monitor so that (as a future neurotic mom) I could check in for peace of mind while out on a date or for afternoon errands.  Subsequently, I married a wonderful but borderline workaholic man who is excited that he can peek in on our baby periodically while stuck at the office.  We are pairing a D-Link wifi system with a traditional audio monitor for use while we are both home.

I plan on securing the access to the feed with a real PW, but am deeply skeptical that anybody will find our sleeping baby sufficiently interesting to hack/stalk/etc.  I just have to remember to aim it away from the part of the room where I'll be nursing. ;)

  • We are getting the Motorala baby camera/monitor.  It received great reviews!  I am not to worried about the wifi issue since our wifi is secured!  I also heard the Samsung was great too!
  • I am just going to use a sound monitor that a family member gave me.. that should be fine- I never had a monitor with my son and it all turned out well. Plus her room it literally right across the hall and at first she will be in our room with us. I'd rather spend that amount of money on other items needed. :) But I am a bit old school (my son is 10).
  • We have a small house and the baby will never be that far away so we are getting a sound monitor. I've been thinking about getting the angelcare sound/movement monitor but not sure if its worth it, or how well it works with a pack n play.

I've been reading amazon reviews of monitors and I feel like too many are written by stupids so I have to weed through to find relevant reviews.

  • Ah, see, I need something I can check on my phone for mornings where I take my other son to bus stop. I can see my house from the bus stop but Id like to be able to leave 8yo at stop with a neighbor if baby wakes up.
  • We have been through a few different vid monitors. I love the ones that you can check on a phone or tablet. They have seriously saved my sanity. Both of my sons wake up multiple times at night and it is nice to be able to watch them on the monitor to make sure they are going to settle back down (or check to see if they have an arm stuck through the crib bars or just threw up or something that needs my attention).

I use an old iPad mini on my nightstand as the monitor at night. The app that I use cycles back and forth between both cameras every 15 seconds or so.
  • Ainslie325 - thank you!  That makes sense.  My office makes us use a 4-digit code if we want access to our work email, unfortunately.  But now that I get how it works I might cave and let DH have this one.
