WWYD about tooth pain?

edited October 2014 in March 2015 Moms
Is it worth calling the on call dentist for tooth pain? I have an appointment Friday but not sure if tooth pain counts as an emergency. Pretty sure it's a wisdom tooth.

Re: WWYD about tooth pain?

  • No it doesn't count as an emergency unless it's excruciating (like you can't function). You are already doing the right thing by going to the dentist.

  • Do you look like a chipmunk? Can you chew/swallow/breathe normally? If yes, don't make an emerg appt, that shizz probably costs big moolah.

    Hope it feels better soon.

Nah its not unless it's so unbearable that you can't function. Just get some oragel and wait for the apt. I lived off of oragel for a while till i could get into a dentist lol my ob told me that oragel was perfectly fine to use. But if the pain gets to the point where its interrupting your life then call. I also took ibuprofen like 2 or 3 times. I know they say not to but i was so miserable my doctor told me that if i needed to take it a time or two that it was fine. I just took 2-200 mgs ones and it helped so so much.

  • The pain is pretty intense and hurts to chew but Tylenol and orajel take some of the edge off. I guess I'm most worried about infection.
  • Keep monitoring your temperature if you are worried about infection. As long as you don't have a fever, you should be aces until the appt.

  • I'm in the- can't hurt to call- thought group. Sounds like it could be an infection. The worst thing to happen is that they will tell you it's nothing and to wait for your Friday appointment. That's what doctors/dentists are for.
  • For tooth pain, I always either suck on a whole clove or put a tiny bit of clove essential oil on it. Usually numbs the whole area.
  • Had an infection for my first pregnancy. I'd left my private dentists and went NHS as treatment was free. Treatment offered to me was rubbish. He wouldn't treat me, told me take paracetamol. Was in agony it made me cry. Went back to my private dentist he was fab, calmed me, reassured me, ended up having to have route canal work with no X-ray. He was so caring and gentle. Who says money doesn't talk. Needless this pregnancy I've kept up with my private dentist. Good luck. Hope you feel better soon
  • That's the worst! I just had a wisdom tooth growing in where my gums got infected. SO painful. My dentist sent me to oral surgery to have the tooth pulled. They used lots of novacaine and my reg doc prescribed me tylenol with codine which helped a bit. Pain went away real fast after they pulled it.
Definitely call and ask. I bet they will fit you in before Friday if you tell them you're in pain!
    Best of luck to you!!
