Transitioning out of swaddle

Re: Transitioning out of swaddle

  • @ghostof5letters‌ and @LolaSimonLove‌ I have a big baby (13.5 weeks, 16.5 pounds, 26 inches long) he's breast fed (bottles mostly) and he still wakes up twice I'm the night.

Might be looking into this sleep suit thing... Is it a "magical sleep suit" or "Merlin's sleep suit"? Or are they the same?

  • OK. I hate gimicky stuff. I didn't want to order the suit. BUT my DS was a terrible sleeper (didn't STTN until a year plus) and it started right around 4 months and so when DD started busting out of her swaddle and waking up a bunch more, I got terrified she was headed down the same path. Terrified enough to spend $40 on a baby snow suit. Verdict: It didn't make her sleep 12 hours straight, but I definitely think it was worth the $$.

The best part about the suit is that is makes it easy to put her down in the crib drowsy and not have her freak out and wake herself up all the way. On the off chance she does startle I can usually just put my hand on her head and "shhhh" her and she'll go back to sleep because she's not flailing all over the place. Looking back, this was where the trouble started with DS. He would wake up EVERY. DAMN. TIME. and start thrashing, so there was no way to ever achieve "drowsy but awake". He never learned to fall asleep in the crib, thus every time he woke up in the night, he needed to be held to go back to sleep. OK with a four month old, no longer fun with a 10 month old.

It's also helped make the transition from the RNP to the crib really easy. I was able to basically take her cold turkey to the crib with the suit. Prior to that, I'd be trying a slow transition. She'd be OK for morning naps in the crib, but there was no way she'd go into the crib for an afternoon nap. Nighttime, she'd go on the crib for the first stretch of sleep, but not for the others. With the suit, I've not had to put her in the RNP or our bed at all.

The suit has also helped cut down the number of wakings and extend the time between wakings. I get an additional 2 hours or so on every sleep stretch which is awesome. She's still getting up twice a night, but at this point, atleast one of those wakings is because she's genuinely hungry, so I wouldn't expect the suit to solve that.

Final verdict: worth the $$. I'll probably buy another in the next size up as well.

  • I ordered my suit! Are most of you just using a diaper underneath, or jammies too? She's been swaddle in an A&A with just a diaper or in a Woombie with light jammies, and a blanket on her lower half so far.

  • I've been doing a cotton, footed sleeper. Our room is cooler than the rest of the house (which is set at 69 degrees). Fleece makes her a little too warm.

  • I am also in the PNW and I have DD in a cotton footed sleeper under the suit. Right now, our house is about 62 - 65 degrees at night. I may move her to heavier cotton PJs when it gets cooler, but I think fleece would be too much under the suit, even if it was cold in the house. We have a fan on in the room, but it's not pointed at her, just on for white noise and SIDS.

So we started using the SleepSuit on Sunday night.  Since her sleep's been crappy anyway, I decided why not.  Her sleep recently has been go down 7:30-8, wake at 10:30-11 and eat then back down, then up every hour until 2 or 3 when I just give up and bring her into bed with me. Also, she's not been resettling herself like she used to be able to do.

First night of sleepsuit: Bed at 7:30, fussed and resettled herself at 9ish, up to eat at 10:30, fussed and resettled at 11:30, up at 1 to eat, then up every hour.  Slight improvement.

Last night (second night):  Bed at 8.  Up at 12 to eat.  Up at 1. Up at 2.  Then up at 4 (2 hour stretch is seriously a win, you guys).  Improvement over the previous night.

Fingers crossed that we see more improvement tonight.  All the reviews I've read said that it's not an immediate thing and may take a few (or more) nights to see a huge improvement, but I feel like we're on the way there.

Also, we keep our house 68-70 and she seemed comfortable in a cotton footed sleeper underneath the suit.

Edited to change her wake time to 4, not 3 for last night.

  • Jeez you guys have cold houses!!!!!!!!  Our A/C was usually set at 76 at night before the BFP and I grumpily set it down to 74 for the baby's sake.  Now I'm shivering under a down comforter and thinking about the utilities bill with the A/C running all night  >:(

Baby seems comfy, though I've been thinking about putting mittens on him now that his arms are unswaddled (I have him in the halo swaddle with his arms out) 'cause I thought he might be getting cold.  Am I crazy?

Well, we live in CO, so right now it gets down into the 30 and 40s at night pretty consistently.  In the summer, it usually gets down into the 60s at night unless we're going through a heat wave.

  • So I found a lot on craigslist with two magic sleepsuits and two zipadee zips. Both seem big on our 10 pounder. We tried the sleepsuit last night and it was a flop. I'm wondering if it's not working because it's too big. We are going to try both again in a month. We are up 5-6 times a night and I'm about to lose my shit:/

  • Still using the zipadee zip and getting just about as much sleep as when fully swaddled. Most nights it's 7:30-4:30 and then back to sleep until about 8, but I did get one night of 8-7 no wake ups at all and it was glorious. She sleeps in a cotton or fleece sleeper in the zipadee and a knit blanket laid on top. The room is usually 71-74 degrees.

Better!  She went 8-11, which isn't great for a first stretch but she was really hungry (emptied both sides).  Back down at 11:15 and up again at 2:40. This is the longest stretch I have ever gotten after her initial waking.  She went back down at 2:50 and then was back up a little after 4 (slightly bleh with this, but oh well) and that's when I brought her into bed with me.  She was working on a ginormous poo, though and that makes her angry.  We'll see what tonight brings.

In a nutshell, we are seeing improvement every night, so hopefully she'll get back to her old ways (8-2 or so) or better soon.  She still does get her feet balled up in the suit, but I don't think it really bothers her.

  • Two nights of the sleep suit and I am sold enough to order a second. If she goes to the bathroom all over this in the middle of the night, I want back up!

That's my thoughts!! @January Bride‌ what hours did your LO do? Mine started out with 10 hr nights, but the past two she's woken up to feed at 4. I'm curious if she'll go back to 10 hrs a night soon! I'm hoping actually
