AW me, Indian Costume

So I found this super cute Indian costume BUT I'm wondering if it's a little to showy for a pregnant chick. FYI, not me in the picture. I made my friend try it on first. :D

  • More power to you for wanting to rock it! I'm at that awkward, I don't look pregnant, but I'm chubby stage. I wanted to wear something frumpy, so my DH and I went as Wayne and Garth this year, oversized jeans and a flannel shirt... So comfy! I would feel awkward in this (plus my blump wouldn't fit).

  • To each their own, for sure! But personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable if I thought that it could potentially offend someone or a whole culture.
  • I couldn't wear just that, I'd freeze to death. I'd probably "try" to borrow an authentic coat from one of my friends as a cover up. I don't really have much for boobs, so cleavage isn't really an issue, friend in picture definitely has boobs. I'd definitely be wearing some thick leggings and fringe boots though.

  • @snedge it's a good story. But I just think there are better ways to educate kids about native culture than to dress up as them. Would you think dressing in black face to educate on African Americans okay?
  • I think it's cute! My belly is too big now to wear anything cute :) if you are comfortable I say rock it.

  • just my 2 cents, i do think the world tends to be too politically correct sometimes, but i don't know if someone might take offense to posting a picture of dressing as a cowboy after one of someone dressed as an indian.

  • I guess I am trying to really think about this. Is it only not ok for Anglo-americans to dress as a native american? Would it be ok for any other race or is offensive for any race to dress as a native American.
  • I'm Irish and Italian - No one better dress up like the Mario, Luigi (toad and the princess are fair game), or a leprechaun.
    Is Yoshi ok? :)

I've been wanting to dress up as this for years! I love this movie!

No, Yoshi is reptilian...that offends reptiles.
Crud. :( I need to be more sensitive to all the feels. I knew Yoshi was a bad idea.

  • And if I really wanted to get on my high horse, technically I have a minute amount of Hopi Native American blood in my veins as well.

You should probably return your costume.

  • Also, would it be offensive if a Native American dressed as a Cowboy??
    BabyFetus Ticker

  • I'm also not that dumb that I don't understand native Americans were not treated well so not every comparison is the same. I just cannot see how dressing in native dress is offensive or racist.
  • Also, I don't find the costume offensive at all. People can be way too sensitive and politically correct these days. If you feel comfortable wearing it- go for it! I personally feel too bloated to wear something so revealing, plus I would probably be cold all night!

  • As I said, to each their own. I have friends who are native who find this very offensive and compare it to black face. You can dress as you want, but I think it's important to put it out there that it can be considered offensive.

I also find dressing in "Native American" costumes offensive. If you were actually researching a specific tribes traditional clothing then OK.

However, 99.9% of all of the "Indian" costumes are based on horrible stereotypes perpetrated by television and movies. The costume in the OP is an example of that. The problem, as I see it, is that we white-wash all Native Americans.

Um. No. We are not white trashing all native Americans. Is the costume historically accurate? No. Does that imply white trashing as you say? No. Mo's cowgirl costume was not historically accurate. In order for a native american costume to not offend it has to be historically accurate? Ridiculous. Most costumes are not. They are costumes. This is Halloween. Women like to be scantally clad and wear sexy costumes so almost ever costume for women are made to be sexy. That does not mean we are white trashing native Americans. Are you implying that this particular costume is white trash?
  • @snedge I very much respect your opinion of it and understand where you are coming from, however, Halloween to me is meant to be fun and silly. If people are offended by that, they need to not take it so seriously. I personally do not take Halloween seriously at all and would not be offended by ANY costume, simply because they are just silly costumes, not purposefully meant to belittle anyone.

@somerandomchick So everyone is supposed to tiptoe around what they do and dress up as because SOME people find it offensive?? Like I said previously, I don't believe in that politically, please everybody and their mothers boyfriend bullshit. Not about that life.

I'm bi-racial...dress up as Halle Berry and you're dead to me.

Ooo question- can I do Halle Berry if I go as Halle Berry AS catwoman? She was slammin' as catwoman.

There are definitely people who DO wear Halloween costumes meant to purposefully belittle someone.

  • And also, some of my extended famy is the exact definition of white trash, drunks, drug addict, poor as fuck, living in trailers, mullets, snaggle toothed, random shit in the back yard, piles of beer cans being saved to take to the recycling shop for money, guess what I still would not be offended because it's funny. Halloween is not meant to be taken literally by anyone.

@snedge I only believe in white privilege to a certain extent. I think people take that a bit too far quite often.

Good thing white privilege isn't like Santa claus it's more like global warming.
I didn't mean it like that, I meant it as I believe white privilege only helps whites to a certain extent, like not being shot for something stupid. It doesn't mean everything is handed to a white person on a silver platter like people crack it up to be. I believe if your a wealthy, healthy, white male, with an education, white privilege has a lot more influence than a piss poor healthy white female without an education.
