What do you guys think of the name Tayte

I've been trying to find old boys names, preferably Nordic that go with Aaron as a middle name. Came across Tayte, meaning happy, and it's been floating around my head, but I'd never heard it before. What do you guys think?

Re: What do you guys think of the name Tayte

  • From what I've found, the original name is either spelled Tayte or Tait, and am not really a fan of the Tait spelling... But maybeTate.
  • I like Aaron too, but it's dh's family tradition to have it as mn. I'm not necessarily attached to it sounding Nordic, but I like names with good, old meanings, and have Nordic background on both sides. I really liked Emil, until I found out the meaning was rival, didn't want to put that on the squish's head from the beginning ...
  • Unfortunately Erik is an exs name, otherwise, I quite like it, but dh says no...

  • I don't love it. It sounds a little too red neck for me.

What about Cash or Colt, @ToasterCat? Maverick? Marlboro?

I prefer Buck. Imma go embroider that on a onsie for your future child.

Nonono, clearly you should choose Cleatus.

Bubba-Buck please. Now I just need help choosing the perfect middle name. I think it should probably only have one syllable since the first name is such a mouthful.

    I vote Rex, or Stud.

I jokingly referred to baby as Cletus the Fetus once in an email and now when my dad checks in he asks how Cletus is doing.
  • Spell it correctly. Tate.
  • Tate is good. Tate Aaron works together. I really dislike the y added in, though. I also like pp's suggestion of Milo.
  • I had a cat named Tate. All of my guys friends called him taint.

  • I also thought that the original post said Taint….if that was what you meant then I love it!  Imagine the conversation of telling people you named your baby Taint.

"This is my son, Taint.  Yes, like just underneath the scrotum.  Why?  We thought it was very unique"- LOL

Okay, all kidding aside, Tayte/Tate isn't my style but if you do go with that name, I would suggest without the Y, otherwise the poor kid would have his name misspelled forever.
  • NOOOOOOOOOOOO! PLEASE DONT!!!
  • I hayte it with the Y, and really only like it as a nn for Tatum. Tatum was on my list for DS#1 but MH rejected it because he hated the nn Tate because it sounded like taint.

  • I like Tate just fine, but adding the "y" seems unnecessary and feminizes it a bit in my mind.

  • I have to agree with PP in that every time I see that name (Spelled Tayte or Tait), I think Taint.

And I'm basically a 13 year old boy when it comes to my sense of humor, so know that his friends will think it too. :P
  • Funny how context affects these things. There are two Tates currently at the school where I teach. It's an exceedingly preppy, wealthy private school, so that's how I think of the name too. With the right last name match, Tate has the potential to sound really sharp. Do NOT use the y. Even if there is some context in which it's authentic, it will not be perceived as authentic by any English speaker.

  • I also think of taint.

But don't be offended. It was pointed out to me that my name for a girl, when quickly said, sounds like mammary. And those commenters are right... just trying to decide if I'm OK with that possibility for the rest of my child's life.

  • I immediately thought of Taystee from Orange is the New Black, lol.

And there are a lot of other good Scandinavian names -- we have several on our list because we love Sweden and plan to go there every year.

  • I do like the name Tate. And plus, when he's a toddler you can call him your Tater Tot! (No sarcasm here. I would actually do that.)

  • What's with the random Y? Random Y's are sad and trendy- don't be sad and trendy
  • Spell it correctly. Tate.
Actually both Tait and Tayt ARE correct spellings of the name, and depending on where you are more popular and historically correct than Tate.  But it's kind of like saying "Riley" is more correct than "Reilly".  That opposite is actually true, but in the US/Canada people would definitely side-eye Reilly as the spelling.

In Scotland Tayt or Tait would definitely be how you'd spell this name.  But unless OP is in Scotland I'd recommend the Tate spelling.

Tayte is NOT a Nordic name. It's not even an English name. It doesn't mean "happy". Tate is from an Old English surname of unknown meaning.

There are so many real, good Nordic names. Torin, Alaric, Soren, Otto.....
Tayt is a Scottish surname.  And I know this from experience.   :)  So yes, not Nordic although Ancestor.com did say it likely had Nordic origins.  Didn't explain how and that's the only place I saw the two referenced together.

  • Thanks for all the feedback guys.  Will keep searching.  I didn't think about the taint thing, so will probably find another name.
    Thanks for the link @mauibliss
@stine28 if he ends up being called Tate, will totally use that :)
    @wonknessmonster thanks for the suggestions.
    @JCWhitney thanks for the info.

It can actually be legitimately both Nordic and Scottish. The Western Isles, St Ninnian's Isle and Shetland Islands of Scotland are/were huge Viking settlements and have Viking festivals every year (thank you Amazing Race for that info). But for the OP, not a fan of the name. Agree with pp who said it was weak sounding. I have several Ole's in my fam but you could also use Magnus, Gideon, Henrik, or Lukas.
I love that you learned that from The Amazing Race!!!

Oh, and I forgot to say in my original post that I've realized sooooooo many names have been ruined for me by American Horror Story.  Tate is another one.  Creepy, creepy Tate.

  • To be honest whenever I hear to name Tate I think of a mans taint area because it sounds the same. I dont think I could name my kid after something like that
