DD turned one two weeks ago. For the last several months we have had the same routine during the week of nursing when waking up, 4.5oz bottle in the morning, nursing at lunch, 4oz bottle in the afternoon, and then nursing at DC pickup and before bed. I've been trying to cut out the DC pickup session for the last 3 weeks by offering snacks instead. It has been working well, but I noticed that the last 2 weeks or so she has increased the length of her nursing sessions from 5 minutes to 15-20, and on the weekends when we're together she is nursing much more frequently. So my thought was she's compensating for the session I cut out.
Fast forward to this week. Yesterday at DC she only took 1oz from her morning bottle, was very distracted and not interested in nursing at lunch, took 2oz in the afternoon, refused to nurse at daycare pickup (I'd pretty much cut this session out but tried since she hadn't eaten much at DC), then took 1oz at bedtime (I was at a meeting so DH fed her a bottle). So instead of up to 3 nursing sessions + 12oz from bottles, she had 2 nursing sessions + 4oz from bottles yesterday. Today she nursed well upon waking up, refused her morning bottle completely, and nursed well at lunch.
DD eats quite a bit of solids so I'm not concerned about her calorie intake, but am a little concerned about her becoming dehydrated. She does drink water from a straw cup, but only 1-2oz/day. Her wet diaper count is ok so far. Any thoughts as to what is going on? Am I over-thinking this or do I have cause to worry? She's always been such a good eater and has never refused or not finished a bottle.
Re: Liquid intake in 1 year old
Also, my DD (16m) only nurses 2x/day now, but each session is at least 15 mins. I think, though, that it is as much about the cuddles as the milk at this point.
