Flu shot!!!

What are your thoughts on receiving the flu shot while pregnant? I have to get the flu shot due to my job, they encourage it. However the shot just does t effect me, it effects my baby. There is something about receiving vaccinations that doesn't settle right with me... Has anyone had the flu shot while pregnant?

Re: Flu shot!!!

  • Yes! With DD and I'll be getting it next week at my Dr appointment... I trust my ob and feel like he wouldn't give me anything if it wasn't a good idea.

  • flu shots are good - esp if your preg sicne its so much easier to get sick due to a shitty immune system.

Is anyone else not able to find any place that has flu shots available? I'm not driving 45 minutes to get one for my kid and I and it seems crazy that no where near me has gotten them yet.

My doctors office did not have them in yet, but I found that in my area CVS Pharmacy has them and the pharmacist is the one that gives you the shot.

@EssJayCee‌ did you or are you going to get it at cvs? I was going to ask about this. I mentioned it to my mil and coworker and they both looked at me like I had 2 heads for wanting to go there. It would be so much quicker and easier then going to the dr. Idk why they think I'm crazy for thinking about going there.

My OB's exact words were "pregnant women die from the flu". We had a girl die in our county last year. Def got a flu shot.

I'm not sure about deaths here but my on said the same thing. Then it was why wouldn't you protect yourself and unborn child?
  • Sorry I didn't look/search before writing...Thank you all for your input :)
  • I got mine a couple days ago. I had headaches, body aches and was tired but that's it. It wasn't nearly as bad as everything I went through in 1st trimester. I would rather get shot now then get sick later!!
  • Since the thread has been hijacked and this came up as a topic talking to my mom... my mom is a little paranoid and she is worried about the different type of shots? She watched doctor oz when he had whatever special about one of the chemicals in the shot being linked to autism... my ob said that was false and that there was no medical data to back that accusation up. My mother is insistant about it, but I'm not really sure...

I'm for sure going to get the flu shot bc honestly autism is a better risk than death, but was just curious what people thought. Is my mom just one of those paranoid ladies?
  • @nungongju‌ yes your mom is paranoid... My mom never gets flu shot until I was pregnant with DD 2 yrs ago, she never thought it was something she needed to get, I couldn't change her mind so to made her go to one of my on appointments and had him explain the pros and cons...she's gets them now.

The pharmacy doesn't charge a fee for the visit on top of the vaccine so it's 100% covered as preventative care under my insurance

I vote just go to the pharmacy
    Thanks!!!!

  • @souptin‌ lmao, thanks. Maybe i should have also mentioned that she is paranoid about ebola too...
  • @lneice0160 thanks for this. Do appreciate it. I try and humor my mother bc i know she means well.. i know now to just stick to my gut and take what she says with a grain...

@scoutfinch13 i hope you get your stock replenished soon. I can only imagine how much harm that man done by spreading such things...
  • And yes I have had the flu shot. They are not only safe but even more hignly recommended in pregnant women.

I felt the same way. Got super run down feeling 2 hours after the shot, but felt better in the following days. Was my first ever flu shot and wasnt as bad as I thought it would be. Definitely would rather that than risk catching the flu.
  • Definitely get the flu shot. At my recent OB appointment that was the first thing they asked. Even asked my husband too. I said yes so right after seeing my Doctor the nurse gave the flu shot to both of us.
  • I got mine at a national chain pharmacy last year and it was cheap and quick.

  • @smash1215 I do appreciate it. Like I said, I was planning on doing it anyway, but now I have more confidence in doing so. My mom has gotten a little paranoid in her older age... And she vaccinates... it was just specifically the flu shot.

But then again... I should expect as much from someone who is paranoid about ebola too. :|
  • I am not one to get flu shots regularly, but since I am pregnant, it was the first thing I asked my midwife. I had the preservative free one given to me at the end of that appointment.

  • I have mine done through work, but I will have to bring the husband to a clinic or our GP. Regardless of work requirements, I have always vaccinated since I was a child with no reactions. I do understand the choice not to, if you have extremely bad reactions.

  • I've been vaccinated for major stuff as a kid (whooping couch, measles, mumps), but I was just curious as to what changed that made the chicken pox something to vaccinate against. This is my first kid, so when I was hearing about chicken pox, it was when I was a child. And back then, you wanted your kid to get it so they wouldn't have it as an adult because it's so bad to have as an adult. I mean exposure parties were a thing in the 90s. So really am just curious what has changed.

Sorry if this sounds ignorant. I just really don't know and have no idea where to really begin looking. Google is a broad spectrum.
  • I'm tired of this question. But I know soon enough it'll be the same thing about the dtap. Just follow your doctor's recommendations already.

Do you have a national chain pharmacy nearby? Many times, they'll have several dates with flu shoot "clinics".

  • My doctor recommended it with my last pregnancy and this one. Not only for my protection, but also for my baby who will be born at the end of this flu season. The newborn won't have his own immunity built up and can't get the vaccine until he's 6 months old, so it's everyone around him having the vaccine that will protect him.

  • Got my Flu shot 2 weeks ago at my OB's office. It's the "preservative free" shot. I'm a teacher and every parent in my area will send their kid to school no matter how sick he/she is......

My ob said that the shot the drug stores get only cover 3 strands. The one the doctor's offices get cover 4. So, I'm waiting for her to get some more in stock, then I'll be getting mine from my ob. You may want to ask your doc if this is the case for you.

  • @somerandomchick thank you so much for being so informative. That clears up a lot of my confusion. It's definitely scary what babies can catch. I'm not paranoid to never leave the house but it kinda makes you want to anyway!

As for the flu shot, I'm hoping my obgyn office has it this time when i go in. Figure might as well get it while I'm already in there.
  • I honestly don't know who Dr. Oz is. Is that weird?

  • I honestly don't know who Dr. Oz is. Is that weird?

It's not a bad thing. He's a 'doctor' that middle aged women - like my mother - adore and revere as truth. He only has a show bc he's friends with Oprah, from what i gathered. From what i have seen, he like to talk about hot issues and weight loss fads. I wouldn't be surprised if one of his recent shows is about preventing Ebola or something like that. He's pretty much preying on these middle aged women and filling their heads with crap.

Then said middle aged mom comes to me, a ftm, and starts putting thoughts into my head and questioning even what my doctor said last time i saw her.

In short, if someone watches dr. Oz and gives youd advice... just smile and nod...
  • FWIW, I had an appt today and they gave me a preservative free one as well. I previously mentioned I got the flu shot at the pharmacy and it was fine. Maybe it is, maybe it's not...I have no business giving advice on this topic. Other than ask your doctor and get one :)

Link to the package insert on the fda's for flu shot.

Here's a piece of it I copied. Won't see me getting the flu shot ever. If you think your doctors have your best interest in mind, think again.
