I'm having an HSG tomorrow and have been reading about some people finding it incredibly painful and others not finding it painful at all. My RE told me take some advil before the procedure, which is never a good sign. I have a very low pain tolerance, so i need to be mentally prepared if it is going to be painful. For those of you that have had an HSG done, what was your experience?
Re: Is the HSG test painful?
It was not painful for me. It was slightly uncomfortable (like mild period cramps) and I was nervous (because how can you not be with something new and important?). I took Ibuprofen as my doc recommended but didn't really need it. You will find scary stories about it, but for most people I don't think it's a big deal. Good luck!

***** Siggy Warning *****
TTC since Dec, 2012. Me: 33; DH: 34
- Ultrasound to look at "lay of the land": normal
- Blood work: normal
- OPKs and ultrasound to confirm ovulation: Yes
- SA for DH: Normal (a couple numbers on the low side of normal)
- HSG: Normal
- Doing several cycles of Letrozole, TI and progesterone
- Aug cycle of Letrozole, TI and progesterone came back with a BFP-MC at 7 weeks.
- Benched until Jan
- Starting Letrozole, TI, Progesteron and HCG Trigger in Feb cycle
I am in the minority (which is a good thing), but I did have some pain. The only reason for it was because one of my tubes was blocked. However, I will say that even at it's worst the pain wasn't awful - think intense cramps, and it passed very quickly. I had some slight cramping the rest of that afternoon, but nothing too bad.
Good luck!

I was a nervous wreck that morning, so after it was done, I was emotionally exhausted. I spent the rest of the day on the couch.

Me: PCOS; I do not ovulate on my own...like ever. All other tests came back good.
Hubby: SA came back in the normal range.
Medicated Cycle #1: Letrozole 5mgs days 3-7, trigger when eggs are ready: total bust...u/s 12/23-lots of little follies. u/s 12/26 follies grew 1mm 1 in each ovary. u/s 12/28 no growth. OPKs for hopeful ovulation, if not progesterone on CD35 to induce next cycle w/5mg letrozole CD 3-7, add follistim CD 8. UPDATE: Positive OPK 1/1 and 1/2, very unexpected and unlikely that I'd ovulate this cycle!
I actually passed out during it, which my dr says rarely happens.
I hope you have a more pleasant experience
4 Losses (2003, 2008, Apr 2012, & Oct 2012)

All AL are welcome

All in all though, it's a quick procedure so even if you have cramping you can take comfort in the fact that it will be over quickly. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the great advice! My RE came to the hospital to do the procedure himself, which made me feel more comfortable. Even with the pain meds it was pretty painful but it was only for a minute. I did get super lightheaded and nauseous after it was over, but thankfully i didn't reach the point of fainting.
@CaitOst21 passed out twice! that's crazy. I agree that doctors do use "mild cramping" way too freely. I've now taken mild discomfort and cramping to mean really horrible pain that could possibly make you pass out or make you wish you were passed out
@firstarabesque sorry to hear you had such a terrible experience
Good luck!
