Speaking of Registries...

This one is a two-parter.

1) I'm not planning on having a baby shower for kid #2 because...well, I'm not. I've heard rumors, though, of the cheer team throwing me another one, and my SIL tried to get me to do a dual shower with her, which I flat-out refused because it's her first pregnancy, she's having twins, she tried for a long time and was finally successful with IVF, and she deserves all the attention and glory.  But I did make a registry because family and close friends asked me what I wanted and weren't taking "nothing" for an answer.  So I sort of made a dream registry.  We have everything we need, but if I could have some things that I wanted, I put them in (like a new, cuter diaper bag or a better carrier).  Is that tacky?  Should I just pare it down to things that would be nice for a girl vs. a boy?

2) DH went to dinner with said SIL and BIL while I was at Homecoming last night (biggest clusterf*** in the history of clusterf***s, BTW), and they asked him to look over their registry and offer advice.  So he showed it to me when I got home and we laughed and laughed and laughed.  Washclothes and no towels or a bathtub.  One baby carrier (uh...twins?).  Wipes warmer (but no wipes).  No swing or bouncer.  NO DIAPERS.  Then DH tells me....they bought a $2000 stroller.

:-O

We tried to find a double-stroller from BBB (where they bought it) that was that much, but we couldn't.  It's gotta be some designer thing, and they are totally into that stuff.  They think we are super-cheap because we found our double stroller for $110 and DH found a nice Bob double jogger for $250 (for him, not for me - ha!).  Theirs didn't even come with car seats.  They told DH their financial planner yells at them all the time and tells them to be more like us.  (I was like...they talk to their financial planner about us?)

My mind is blown.

Re: Speaking of Registries...

  • Wait, do people register for wipes and diapers? Is that a thing?

All I ever registered for - with my first only, that is - was special or cute things. I can't imagine having gotten anything that was plain or utilitarian. Mostly it was stuff like special blankets, nice outfits, a pretty moses basket... You know, stuff you can ooh and ahh over. The necessary stuff, like breast milk bags, baby towels for everyday use, and Aquaphor, I bought myself. I definitely didn't ask for or get diapers. And even if I did, how would I know what to register for? Sizes, brands, etc - what works for one baby may not work for another so I bought most diapers and wipes after the baby was born...

  • We just bought a double stroller for $110. I cannot fathom spending $2000 on a stroller. Even if I was a millionaire. We are some of the cheapest people alive though, so your SIL and BIL would probably be horrified at us :)

  • So I'm torn. Our stroller/car seat for one was over a thousand. We love it and i bet for two would have been that much. If they have a financial planner obviously they are saving and thinking of their futures so my guess is they can afford it...

I didn't register for diapers or wipes. I figured that was our recurring costs. However, I agree especially with two you will need multiple bounces, swings and jumpers. That's where I would help them. We ended up buying so much after the baby came after we figured out what we needed. Everyone has different needs. For instance, we bottle fed unexpectedly and had to buy a ton of pumping storage and bottles.
  • They do pretty well but are definitely not uber-rich, but they spend like they are (which is why the financial planner is mad at them a lot). BIL got some settlement from a motorcycle accident a while back; I don't know for how much.  I think a lot of it goes back to how poor they were as kids (because 4 of the 7 are big spenders) and how expensive things give them a sense of...security? Accomplishment? I don't know.  My dad lost his job when I was 8 and I still always think I have no money, despite the fact that I know we spend consciously and we are financially secure.

I'm so surprised so many people didn't register for diapers and wipes - everyone I know does.  I guess I thought it was a thing.  Like getting a nursing cover.  ;-)

    @luxannie, you got PM.

  • I didn't register at all. Our parents bought us big items (stroller, highchair, crib, dresser, change table) and we bought everything else. Looking back, I wish I had made a registry just for us to see only because everything came from Sears and if baby is born on their due date (which he was), they give you everything on your registry free.

We cloth diapered, cloth wipes, and didn't use his crib for the first few months. There was nothing really special that we needed besides the furniture/car seat and I wanted to pick out all clothes by myself because I'm picky. I felt like registering/having a shower was greedy for me, I know it's not but I'm just really not the kind of person who likes attention so it wasn't for me.

A $2,000 stroller is nuts. Kinderwagons are a recommendation from a moms of multiples board and they are a few hundred. Again, $2,000 stroller.....no, no, no.

We are so thankful that our second daughter, Lillian Elizabeth "Lily", was born healthy and happy on February 11, 2013.  We love her to pieces.

We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011.  She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.

  • I wonder if they got the orbit double? That's the only one I can think that BBB carries that might be that much. Even the Bugaboo Donkey (their double) isn't that expensive. But the orbit? Because you have to buy the seat, the chasis, the double kit, and the second seat, plus bases if you go with the car seat instead of the stroller seat... you're talking $$$$ for a really goofy looking stroller! Image of the double helix below.

Maybe you could bring up baby gear in casual conversation and mention something that you really found useful that they didn't register for? Something like, "I just loved my XYZ when LO was born! It was so helpful. Ate you getting anything like that?" This mentions great that you liked/needed/used and points out that you're available for help without blatantly saying, "You're registry is dumb!"

Even though we're all thinking it, lol!

  • At least they asked for your advice before it was too late! It's nice to at least have some diapers and wipes lying around. That way you are not running out last min when you start running low.

As for the stroller, big expensive strollers are very popular in my area. I don't see the allure. It's something that you use for just a couple of years. I have a City Mini, which was more than I even wanted to spend back then, but my mom was nice enough to buy it for us for Christmas before LO was born. My DH even jogs with it. I think that if he ever tried a BOB he would never go back.

  • I spent $350 dollars on a Britax B-Ready stroller with the second seat. I saved, researched, looked and hesitated on buying it. My H said it better come with a motor and drive itself for that price. I didn't even buy it until E was 10 weeks old.
