need advice re: potentially switching DC

We currently pay what we consider a ton for DC ($1700/month). We love love love LO's main teacher, but have a lot of issues with the center in general. We've just found out that another center that gives discounts to employees at my work (so, $700/month) should have an opening for us soon. We've heard that it's pretty good, but not amazing. In terms of the center itself, I think the cheaper place would be much better.

Our current place has issues with disorganization (management turnover), security (not checking IDs of people coming to pick up kids, no one caring if we sign LO in or out), etc., which we are obviously not happy about. We've also seen them but little babies on their stomachs to sleep, prop up bottles, etc., though we've never had problems with that stuff with LO. However, LO and her teacher absolutely love each other and I'd hate to move her somewhere where she doesn't have as good of a bond with her teacher.

Our current place has the teachers move up with the babies, so LO would presumably be with her teacher until she turned 2.

But, $1000/month is a HUGE difference and the center itself is not good. So, do we move?

  • You might find that LO loves the teacher at the new place too.  I'd at least tour it and see what you think.
  • I called today and asked about touring. They said we could come in for a tour when our name comes up. Maybe I'll call back and push harder to go sooner.

You all are right about the issues at the current center...it sounds worse when I have it all written out!
  • That's a huge price difference. I would definitely at least check the other center out. Since they give discounts for your company, do you know anyone who has their kids there?

  • Exactly what @shellbell3845‌ said. Every time I go to respond lately, she has already said exactly what I would've said. Get out of my head! ;)

  • I'd go check it out, and ditto @ciaomama about just stopping in when you're available so you can see how things are run without them expecting a visitor.

Besides the huge cost savings, it sounds like there are some issues with your current place anyway that you'd be likely to start looking around for a better place.  Bottle propping and babies asleep on stomachs are big red flags.

  • Thanks ladies! I get the impression they make you wait to tour because there are a bunch of infant rooms (it's a huge place) but once you have a spot they can let you meet the actual teachers LO would have. I will try to do some sort of visit in the meantime. A girl today did say she went to drop of her registration forms in person and they took her around a bit.

I know 2 people who've has kids there for a while and a girl who just started there. They all seem pretty happy with it. They did mention a few incidents, but that they were investigated promptly and thoroughly and I guess really that can happen anywhere, even with background checks.

Honestly, we saw the place we're at now and another higher end place (the only 2 that had openings in our area) and they were both so "meh" that I didn't even want to see the cheap places! Maybe one of them would have been better.
  • Yeah... I would just stop by without an appointment. That's disruptive and you would take someone who probably should be working with kids away to show you around. Most daycares have an open door policy for parents of currently attending children so anyone can drop it at any time in that sense, but not anyone off the street.

I'd switch places. The money savings is HUGE and your LO will do great with any good caregiver.

  • I know this isn't the original question, but I've toured daycares that let you come in whenever and also those that make you make an appointment.
