Capsule Wardrobe?

I mentioned this blog in another post:

www.un-fancy.com

Basically, for each season she puts together a "capsule wardrobe".  She ends up with about 34-37 pieces of clothing that she really loves for that season and then makes outfits for the next 3 months just from those clothes.

Has anyone ever done something like this?  The idea intrigues me.  I feel like I just keep adding to my closet, and it's so hard for me to let stuff go, even if I know I don't really love some of the things I have.  I worry I would get tired of the same pieces of clothing - but if I really love them, would I get tired of them?

Thoughts?

  • I would love this!! But there aren't really seasons here and it would be tough to know when to transition. Like last weekend I needed a cold weather outfit but today it's high 80s

  • @WasNotWas - this girl is in Texas, so she has similar weather issues.  I think she just chooses when to make the transition and makes sure there are clothes appropriate for different weather each season.  That definitely makes it harder though.

  • A friend of mine is really into this. It's not my thing but I am working on minimizing.

  • Love it @WasNotWas‌ I keep putting off the work of going through my wardrobe :). But I really really want to. I'm curious - will you post what you have in yours? Pics would prob be too much, so maybe a quick rundown of like x blouses, x cardigans, x jeans, x dresses. Did you go with colors that go together like the blogger who does mostly neutrals and some burgundy/wine pieces? Or just go with whatever.

I'm excited because I really would prefer fewer, nicer more expensive pieces of clothes I love to wear rather than a bunch of cheap on sale clothes. But it's such a shift in thinking - it'll be hard to do!

  • @numbersgirl08‌ I have 7 pairs of shoes (not including my "take the trash to the curb" flip flops), 8 pants, 1 dress, 2 jackets, 4 sweaters, 1 cardigan, and 15 shirts. I also have a couple pairs of like everyday jeans that I didn't include in the count.

They are surprisingly colorful but what I did was just put aside every top I liked while I was emptying my closet. Then I picked all my bottoms. I put all my bottoms on the back of the couch and matched the shirts, I made sure they went with at least 3 bottoms. Today is day 3 of having my closet reduced and I feel very put together each day because my outfits feels intentional rather than just grabbing whatever.

I wound up doing something similar for my workout clothes because I have been accumulating them for so long. I did 21 shirts and 12 bottoms. I figure I will change them out as needed and them switch from pants and capris to shorts next summer.

  • Sounds like a great method @WasNotWas‌ We have guests in town this weekend, so maybe I'll go through my clothes when they leave!

Well most of my stuff is hiking, skiing, working out clothes. I think those all should be lumped into the exempt bucket?

I think I could handle other clothing being lumped into one bucket.
You'd be surprised, once you get going, how easy it is to want to minimize your exempt stuff too
