LMP vs DPO?

According to my LMP (Sept 9th) I was 4wk 1day at my first blood draw. But I got a positive OPK on Sept 28th- which meant if I ovulated that day I would've been 3wk 4day pregnant at my blood draw.

My beta was 32 and progesterone 20.

Which date is more accurate?

Does it really make a big difference?

  • Personally, I prefer DPO for beta and progesterone numbers. If you ovulated "late" that could have a significant impact on your numbers. Plus, my preferred beta collection site uses DPO (betabase).
But, for calculating EDD, I like LMP. Unless you ovulated on, like CD42... Anyway, in that instance, they'll adjust your EDD if needed at your first u/s.

  • My doc uses my lmp even though I o early (short cycle and o normally around cd 11).  It's just an estimate anyhow.  My first was a week early based on lmp, but I think only about 2 days early based on ovulation.

This is one thing that irrationally annoys me, I HAVE to go by O date (or for IVF this pg and last, transfer date).  I know it's just an EDD, I've never delivered on or even near my EDD, but I like to be as accurate as possible.  Also, I O late, with DS1 I didn't O until CD28, that would've put my EDD way off and my previous OB didn't do more than 1 u/s unless there were extenuating circumstances and IMO 20w is too late to get an accurate date.

Also, since DH got snipped I don't keep track of any dates.  I have a short LP so I know about when I O and then expect a period a weekish later.

  • I like using my o date (and I chart so I know it). In theory it doesn't matter, but it does when the baby is born after their due date and you run into an induction as you approach 42, when if you are sure of your dates you know you should be able to wait a few more days. I was lucky that I went into labor the day before I was set to be induced, but I believed I should have had almost na other week. When you are talking about interventions and you want to avoid them, accurate dating does matter, for number 2 and 3 I fudged my lmp to match my ovulation date.

  • I go by DPO. I O late (between cd30 and cd54) so my dates would be way off by LMP. However, the practice I go to always does a dating u/s to confirm EDD.

  • We did IUI with a trigger so I know when I O'd and I use that day - at least until our first u/s
