Non-toxic crib help!

We're looking everywhere for a crib that has no VOC, water based, non toxic lacquer and finish. All I'm finding is like $1000+ and DH won't go for it. No one at BRU seems to know what they're talking about and can seem to tell me what is used on their cribs. Anyone seen them or bought one from anywhere at a pretty reasonable price? TIA

Re: Non-toxic crib help!

  • Just a thought, but could you buy a traditional crib and apply multiple coats of a preferred varnish?  I realize that the offending finish would still lurk below the surface, but it might help you feel a little more comfortable about it.  Good luck.

I'll have to research that. DH says that he thinks the water based varnish might "seal" the toxins in. Good Idea! Thanks.

  • I have been going INSANE for the past few weeks trying to find this same thing.  It is impossible.  We actually tried even going to an unfinished furniture store to then use non-toxic paint/ stain ourselves and we called/went to almost 10 stores - and NONE of them had them.  One place told me it was because of liability issues.  (???)  And this was after researching then online extensively and finding close to nothing (they are all really boxy and ugly and WAAAAAY overpriced.)  DaVinci claims that they use nontoxic paint.  Who knows to whose standards that conforms though?  We have made the decision, unfortunately, to suck it up and go for a well-made, stationary crib and top it with organic and non-toxic sheets, bumper, mattress, etc - and to order it early so that we can let it air out before the baby comes.  If you find anything, let me know!  I'd love to hear if you have any more thoughts...

https://www.allchildrensfurniture.com/asp/show_detail.asp?sku=PAL1219&refid=IK43-PAL1219#additional (I actually thought this one was kind of mod and cute - $500. and free shipping)

https://www.thecleanbedroom.com/Organic_Nursery/Natural_Home_European_Crib.htm (a little boring IMO but $455 and free shipping)

https://www.gelcowoodcraft.com/ This is an unfinished furniture store that will ship, but who knows for how much!

I just feel so limited! I'll let you know if I find anything else and I'll research DaVinci.

  • Ooh!  I LOVE the unfinished one!  Thanks agian, I really appreciate it! :)  Good luck to you in your search as well...
  • Have you seen the Ikea crib called Sniglar? I don't think it has any finish on it at all. It's only $79 dollars and made mostly of solid beech.

Most of the Ikea baby cribs are made in parts of Europe, not China so that wins them points for me.

Also, I'm not sure if your part of Ohio has any Amish groups, but Amish furniture is beautiful and natural. Same designs forever and have always been safe. I'd take a hand me down amish crib over a new chinese crib.

  • This is where we are buying a lot of baby stuff (mattress, bedding, etc).  They have cribs, too.
