Decorating the nursery

Has anyone started? What's your theme if anything?

I'm just 14 weeks but a planner. The room that will be the nursery needs new windows so after that's completed this winter we'll start with paint. I don't want a lot of color. I'm thinking creams and white so it's soothing and peaceful. I actually bought this ABC bedding from Pottery Barn last weekend. It was on sale and being discontinued and it's the only thing I liked so far so I figured better grab it.

  • We did a monkey/jungle theme last time.  I love it and I plan to keep it the same this time when we move DS into his big boy room.  It probably looks more boy than girl, but I don't really care.

  • DD will be moving into her big girl room first. So, I've been focusing my energy on that right. When we did the nursery for her I painted it grey and white. I used the accessories to bring in the color (flowers and butterfly theme). This time, I'll just be switching out the accessories. We just found out we're having a boy and I already have an idea of what I want to do, americana sailor. I don't think it's really too early to start planning. Especially since you're doing more than just paint.

  • Vintage New York if it's a boy or girl. I'll just mix up the accessories.
  • We're going to do a turtle/underwater theme. We are waiting to find out the sex before we do or buy too much, as turtles can skew boy-ish very easily. I just finished moving all of the other stuff out of that room yesterday :)

Thanks! I'll post pics when we finally get started.
We're in the process of completely renovating our second floor- taking down walls and adding a master bath. This could be a 1-2 year project. The hallways have a gross wallpaper that is definitely coming down so I understand. In the meantime, we've moved to the first floor - 2 bedrooms down there.
  • #2 will eventually be sharing with DD. We have always been team green, so we went neutral. Gray walls, white furniture, and the bedding is lime green with gray and white patterned accents.

  • We're not doing too much with the nursery 'nook' we'll create in our one-bedroom NYC apartment, but we are turning the dining room area into a play (or tummy time/crawl room at first I guess) room of sorts, and the theme for it will most likely be vintage hot air balloons. The space will be visible from the rest of the apartment (which is very industrial/neutral; basically like a restoration hardware catalog, for better for worse) so I don't want to go with anything way too childish in theme or bright in color. All in the execution, I'm sure, but I've found a few vintage prints and other touches that should make it work.

  • I've only started mentally preparing. Waiting until Black Friday to start shopping. My plan is to buy white furniture (but I wonder if that will work if we have a boy).

My son has a white crib and I love it! We did, however, do a red and a blue dresser.

  • DS's nursery will remain the nursery and he will move. We were team green with him so the nursery is creams and khaki with touches of blue that can be switched out this time around if need be. We will be building a new home shortly after the new LO arrives so they will both get new rooms when we move.

  • I'll wait to start planning until we know the sex.  I also need to figure out which room will be the new nursery.  I'm not planning on switching DD to a big girl bed anytime soon. Crib for lyfe. Girl I really like a navy white and pink kind of nautical theme maybe.  Not sure. But I like those colors.  Boy, I'm not sure. Outdoors type maybe.
  • We bought the bedding set because it was really cheap at a consignment sale. We will start on the nursery when we have a place of our own.
  • Right now we live in a 2 bedroom apartment and our kids share a room, but we are in the process of renovating a house that will have a girl's room and a boy's room, so this LO will end up sharing one of those. The crib bedding I have for a boy will go with what I have planned for DS's new room, which will be cowboy themed with red, white, blue, and brown. DH has his child's saddle on a neat wooden rack that will go in there, and then some old chaps and cowboy hats will be on a wall-mounted horseshoe rack. There will also be a buck mounted on the wall.

The bedding I have for a girl will go with my plans for DD's room. Her room will be shades of red, pink, and baby blue, with white eyelet bedskirt and window treatment and I'm in the process of making matching quilts for her bunk beds. The crib bedding I have has red, pink, and blue flowers and is so pretty. DD's nursery had a bird theme, but her current room has horses and she'll probably want to keep that. The new baby won't move in with it's sibling until it is sleeping pretty well at night, so it will probably end up in our guest room for a while, but will not have it's own room permanently as we plan to use that room for our parents who live out of town and like to visit frequently.
  • I'm doing bright colors! I love the brighter the better! Our first had a woodlands nursery with bright green walls, the second was grey and yellow with blue walls. This one will be neutral walls with bright colored bedding and carpet like this picture!
  • My daughters nursery was a lavender and white octopus and underwater theme, and she LOVES sharks now so I'm thinking to try and continue that in her big girl room, but with a more grown up feel.
New baby nursery will most likely be grey and white with gold, and probably a woodland animal theme, no matter what the sex is.

  • If it's a boy we are going to do a Marvel Comics nursery. If it's a girl we were looking at doing an Alice in Wonderland type nursery. This could all change though lol.
  • If it's a boy we are going to do a Marvel Comics nursery. If it's a girl we were looking at doing an Alice in Wonderland type nursery. This could all change though lol.

I love the marvel comics idea!
  • We did a gender neutral room for DS with blue decorations. The theme is dr. Seuss "one fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish". I just need to get a couple decorative items in girly colors if it's a girl. But I'm pretty sure it's a boy.
  • Such cute ideas!! And all so different. I love it. We are team green so neutral is key. I think I'm pretty sold on this dark wood crib from pottery barn. The color is called chocolate. I want to mix and match dressers. Practically bc the matching dresser is like $1000. What do you all think of a dark wood crib with a white or cream dresser and rocker/glider?
  • I did the Dwell studio Charlotte bedding for my son, I know it's pretty girly. We didn't really use the bumpers and I got the owl sheets as well so it was mostly grey, and blue with light blue walls. I also still have our Argington crib and changing table which I love. Hoping not to get caught up in buying a lot of stuff but we will see! I would love to use most of the same stuff but make it a constellation vintage map kind of theme with the artwork. So fun!

  • No nursery here! We live in a 1 bedroom and all we will be buying is a mini crib. Clothes are going in bins in our living room bookcase, which I'll be taking all the books off of and storing at my parents. We aren't even getting a changing table, just the pad to be moved wherever it's needed. I was sad at first not to be planning a nursery and hopefully will one day after we buy a house and are blessed with a second baby, but it also has given me a crazy amount of freedom bc I can just say no to a lot of baby things I'd other wise be spending money on like coordinating lamps and bedding and such. It's good and bad lol
  • I'm still decorating the nursery from the first baby. I love decorating but take forever to settle on specifics and I prioritized function over form. We chose to have a Montessori baby room and have a good start with the basics: a floor bed, handmade mobiles, pictures at DD's eye level, accessible books, and this cool mirror and bar thing I made. Not much style yet though! I'm working on it.

We'll go gender neutral with some accessories for each kid. Two will be sharing the room for a while! Colors are griege walls, colorful red kilim rug, and eventually some soft brown accents. Lots of sheepskins, wood, and other natural elements planned but no theme per se.

    Really bad photo...

  • Lots of cute ideas! We're doing an elephant theme, but haven't gotten anything yet. We're planning on doing a white crib because the room is kinda small and I think white will help keep it bright and open. We're painting 3 of the walls a light grey, and the crib wall either teal or lavender depending on the sex. I'm going to print real photos of baby elephants on canvases (3) and put them over the crib. I have lots of things picked out that I'm swooning over, but I'm mobile and am too lazy to pip, so I'll come back and add them later. I can't wait to put it all together!

  • We're doing a fairly gender neutral woodland theme. I want it to be a little vintage/rustic instead of babyish so it'll grow with the baby. We like teals, reds, oranges, browns and taupes/off-white. I'd love to add gold but I think that might be more for a girl?

With gold you also go with brass accents. That could be either!

  • I adore DS's nursery/room. We did teal blue walls, white trim and did safari animals for the quilt, curtains and mural that were brightly colored with orange, teal, purple, yellow, brown. It's the most adorable thing in the world and I'm gonna cry when we move out this month.
  • I will not start working on it till January or maybe late December. The room is already painted in green and off white. I have written some decorative quotes on the door with navy blue. I think I will just get a crib, window curtains and a dresser in addition to a side bed that I already have. Haven't decided on the colours yet but it will vary between green, blue and off white

  • I found out its a boy and like names I have no set idea for nursery design. I'm thinking something light & airy with soft grays & cream and hints of color.

I love the wingback upholsteted rocker & it's on the top of my list.

  • @amandamarie2‌ what are you doing to make it a Harry Potter theme? I love the books and movies too. I doubt think my husband would be down with a HP theme but it's such a cute idea!
  • we're trying to find a pack n play with a non-offensive pattern.  The struggle is real.

Like @bmblebea we aren't doing a separate nursery, not in this house.  We rent a 2 bedroom with the second bedroom serving as a guest room/my office (I WFH so it's used constantly).  We live half the country away from our parents so are planning on room for them until at least mid-summer.  There is a 50/50 chance that we move to a different state in mid-July, so don't want to plan to purchase anything for here or switch out the guest bed and then have all the extra things to move.

  • I went completely girly-crazy with DDs nursery and I regret it now! I didn't think I would be pregnant again so soon, but if I had done something more neutral, it would be much easier this time.

IMO, I would stick with more neutral colors and then add girl or boy colors with the bedding/curtains/blankets/rug etc...

I have all this pink, girly safari stuff in DDs room. We have our AS on 10/31, so we will really be figuring it out then if it REALLY needs to change (if LO is a boy) or what...

I love doing mix and match! Shabby chic - old w/new look is so me so why not just swap a color in a dresser? I'm doing the same and I'm actually wanting to get a used glider to reappolster with a fun print so my gender neutral room has a little spice to it ;)

I'm thinking blue/ grey tone light blue light orange and creams for my theme and getting the prints to make it more towards boy/ girl! I'm a planner too but can't wait another month to start decorating so I at least have my color scheme going :)
  • I won't decorate until I know if it's a boy or girl.  If it's a boy we will do a nautical theme not sure yet for a girl.

My daughter didn't have a nursery until she was 3 months old because we were living in a one bedroom apartment wihile we were building our house.  He room is sort of old Hollywood glam with dark purple accent walls, white trim, crystal chandelier and other sparkly things.  It's more of a grown up look than a baby look but I love it.
