Flu shot???

Re: Flu shot???

  • I received my flu shot on Monday. I also sent an email to the grandparents, aunts and uncles (all are local) asking them to do the same. Baby boy will be born in the middle of flu season--I will take precautions.  If you don't want your shot, that is your choice. And as a (now second time mom) it is my choice to keep you at a safe distance until my child is older. Sick babies under 3 months typically mean hospitalized babies.
Is it wrong that we've told some of our family members we've had it and they need to get it in order to be around the baby? They work in daycare so it's definitely a good idea. For them.
Are you asking if its wrong to say - "everyone else must get the shot but I don't have to?)

That is what it sounds like to me. Which it lying and is wrong. They are at risk but so are you who has a compromised immune system...

  • Um, ignorant question I guess, but I just got the regular old flu shot. Was I supposed to get a preservative free one?

Tylenol hasn't been tested on pregnant women either if I am not mistaken.
But the flu has been proven to kill pregnant women and their unborn children.

and @mrsthadababy‌ your example of organic vs gmo is kind of comical. Way to bring up another hot button topic that has no relevance to the current discussion and it not as clear cut as your make it seem.

I forget how up in arms people get about organic. It was the first example that came to mind. I was just thinking about how its pretty easy to opt in for a pregnancy flu shot, you would think it would be more widespread. Geez louise.

Yes but I was at work and I'm pretty positive (like 90%) everyone got the same shot.

  • During my last pregnancy, there was still ambiguity about whether or not pregnant women should get the flu shot and my OB didn't recommend it to me. I ended up hospitalized at almost 27 weeks for the flu. This time I absolutely got the flu shot.

That's not true. I have worked at 2 different places where the flu shot was mandatory. I have never received a different flu shot than anyone else because I was pregnant.

  • I will get one.

I asked my OB last pregnancy and she said it does not matter which version (preservative free or not) I got, just stay away from the at-the-time new one with the tiny needle. Idk if they even offer those anymore.

Lol! "Lying is wrong!" Is exactly what my son said when he found out there was no Santa.

I didn't say everyone has to get it but I don't have to. Please don't skew my statement. I said some (three) members of my husband's family work in daycare (one lives in this house) and after working with them for 2 years, I know when they "clean" the daycare they neglect things like the door knobs, toilet handles, etc. And often the majority of the kids get sick.

So yes if they want to be in contact with the baby, they'll have to have the flu shot (they usually get it anyway).

But you told them you got it when you didn't...

Get the flu shot if you want. But I am sorry to force it on others for your sake and to lie that you didn't get the vaccine you are pushing on them is pretty shitty. No matter how many smilies you add to it doesn't make it better.

And I will side eye that decision any day. And I can voice my disagreement if I please.

  • Sadly shaking my head at those who are able to receive it but chose otherwise.  Hope you/baby are okay.  I've experienced what can happen if you don't.

Range: absolutely nothing, I feel great and dodged the flu!  (yea- here's your cookie) to vent for a month, ECMO, CVVHD, learning to walk again, feeding tubes, drains, skin breakdown, 6-7 figure medical bills.

  • People most susceptible to getting the flu are children, the elderly and pregnant women.  So, yes, you should definitely get one.  Pregnant women who get the flu are likely to end up in ICU.  The fact that you work in a hospital, I'm shocked your employer doesn't require it.  My sister is simply a nursing student and the hospital required her to get it just because she is in the hospital a few days a week for her clinicals.  PLEASE get the flu shot.  Get your husband and anyone else who lives in your household to get one too.  If a newborn gets the flu, they are at high risk to die or at least end up in NICU.

Short answer: Yes.  Get the shot.

Doctors and the CDC and medical schools and university hospital systems and the National Institutes of Health and the World Health Organization don't just go around making things up because they think it's the fun thing to do.  Pregnant women who get the flu die at much higher rates than non-pregnant otherwise healthy women.  That's a fact.

Also, here is an amazing satire piece on people who don't get the flu shot - this piece is directed at healthcare workers who abstian, but there are a few generalizations that can be made as well: https://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/09/16/1330221/-Dumb-Asses-who-don-t-get-the-flu-vaccine#

Also, here is the World Health Organization's statement on pregnancy and the flu vaccination: https://www.who.int/immunization/newsroom/newsstory_seasonal_influenza_vaccination_pregnancy/en/
"23 NOVEMBER 2012 - In an updated position paper, published in the Weekly Epidemiological Record today, WHO recommends that countries considering the initiation or expansion of seasonal influenza vaccination programmes give the highest priority to pregnant women. Additional risk groups to be considered for vaccination, in no particular order of priority, are: children aged 6-59 months; the elderly; individuals with specific chronic medical conditions; and healthcare workers."
  • @ducktale when I got mine this morning, all they had were the preservative free so maybe thats what most get now

  • All the hospitals I've worked at make you get flu shots. I always look at it like your protecting yourself but the patients you come into contact with as well. To each his own
