Trauma.. Miracle baby

September 26th was the first time I had seen my brother in 3 years due to us both being active duty military and deployments and such. I had a really nice subaru STI, my dream car, and I wanted him to drive it. 5 minutes after we got in the car, not even a mile down the road, we went 130mph into a tree. It was mostly on my side, but he got the worst of it. His airbag deployed and mine did not. It's been almost two weeks, and my brother is finally waking up from his coma. He's 23 and I am 21. I remember every moment of the wreck but what I remember most is on the way to the hospital via helicopter, the used a doppler and before I blacked out I heard that heartbeat.

I have 6 broken bones in my face, but had surgery so now I have 3 metal plates. I swallowed 6 teeth and the rest broke. My jaw is wired shut right now. For 3 more weeks it will be. I broke both my legs and had surgery on my right knee. My left arm was shattered and there's so much nerve damage that I will never be able to use that hand or fingers again. Though 3 metal plates in that arm kept it there for looks I guess. I have had 3 ultra sounds and got to see little bean jump around and kick his little legs. I thought I was 10 weeks but I am 13... :) baby is doing so well in there regardless of the trauma we have both been through. Miracle baby hardly describes it. My brother and I shouldn't be alive as it is. But we both are... And all 3 of us will pull through this.

Ending on a different subject..
With my jaw being wired shut and these dang pregnancy cravings, I'm going insane!! I hate eating through a tube.

Wow! What a story. I'm so happy to hear that all will be well in time. Your little one is a miracle baby, and reading this post helps keep my craziness in perspective when I worry about the most mundane things: after I might work out too hard, not drink enough water, etc.
I don't have any advice for your jaw and cravings, but I'm so thrilled that your pregnancy is progressing well. Let the symptoms be a reminder of the miracle. I know that sounds super cheesy. I'm sure the other ladies will word it better. Just glad you get to stick around and Bump with us!!!
  • This was hard for me to read. You all got so lucky! My DS lost his father last year going about that speed on a motorcycle while wearing his helmet.
DS and I were very close to him.

  • Oh my God is good! What a miracle baby you have, all 3 of you are so blessed.

On a side note, your injuries sound very similar to my best friends who veered into the other lane because of texting, but she's made a full recovery, took awhile but she did it! I hope that's a little inspiration that something so devastating can have a possitive outlook!
  • So glad you all are on the road to recovery!!

  • I have always been into cars, motorcycles and trucks. At 21 I had a motorcycle. I drove fast. I was dumb. Luckily I never got into any accidents or anything. One day I will have a motorcycle again. Just not today. It is breaking my heart I can't snowmobile this winter as well. One day I will be able to do fun things again. Now my jeep is the SLOWEST VEHICLE I HAVE EVER DRIVEN! Not exaggerating either, sucks. But I don't need it to go fast so I guess I will survive. I am glad you are all safe and healing. Praying you guys have a speedy recovery!
  • glad you all are okay.  just remember as you recover, and afterwards, that you sometimes reach a point in life where the sorts of fun you have need to be re-evaluated.  with a baby on the way, just be careful.  there is no shame in not doing things that are as exciting as you used to.

  • I feel like i must have skipped the last paragraph on my read thru of the post @saltbox40. I'm sure eating through a tube is hugely annoying and inconvenient but maybe that's a life lesson. Maybe i'm just overly sensitive about the post because my cousin died at 22 doing something "reckless."

  • The mother in me is furious with you right now. Not once in your post is there a sign of remorse or regret for what could have happened.

We were going that fast because we were on a straight stretch and he wanted to test the limits. It's nothing new to us being careless kids. I regret every second of it. I wish I could change even one thing! My next car will definitely have great crash ratings and will never go fast... Mommy mobile!
I guess people are missing this. She did show remorse and regret.
Even if she did say that, it does not explain why she would talk about food cravings or joke about getting a mommy mobile!

I still fail to understand how you can side with OP on this?

IMO that is a sort of light hearted, brush off regret. "Oh yeah, I totes regret doing that" is how I read this. Especially since the sentence before that was basically saying "yep were just careless people". I could be wrong, but this really sounded like someone who wasn't all that concerned with regret. Also, how can she sound so breezy when she is literally suffering through some intense pain??
  • We're not were... It won't let me edit...
  • I agree with PPs and @jdles16. I find it extremely odd that this didn't make news headlines given the gravity of the incident, the fact that you are both military and the speed you were going.

Since you are both military, (you are in the Army according to previous posts) I also have to wonder who took jurisdiction for this incident...local or military? Are you receiving assistance from your chain-of-command? With all of your injuries, it doesn't seem like you'd be able to get around easily. Have you been counseled on the gravity of your actions?

It goes without saying (but I'll say it anyways) you, your baby and your brother are extremely lucky to have survived something so extremely stupid. I can only pray that you will think of your child, and the safety of others on the road, before you get into another vehicle.

You are apparently 21 years old and in the military, and your brother is 23?  I would think with these responsibilities, acting like "careless kids" would be something long in your past.  Especially with both of you being on deployment.  I also find it amazing that you have had both your arm and face completely reconstructed in less than two weeks.  I'm sorry but this sounds like complete BS to me.
  • You're so strong! To have such a positive attitude about it is totally inspiring. I wish you the best in your recovery and for your brother and baby!

I was just going to let this thing go, and not even respond to it, but based on the responses you got I cannot not say this. It's hard for me to give sympathy to someone that clearly doesn't care about their own life or the life of others.

I'm glad you are all okay, but your brother should be prosecuted for reckless driving, and you for child endangerment. I have friends that died from a car accident caused by the reckless driving of others, so excuse me if IDGAF about your cravings.
While I agree that brother should be charged with reckless driving (and OP for being damn stupid, which I don't think is a crime you can charge unfortunately) it is not child endangerment. There was no child in the car. There was a fetus, but at this point the fate of the fetus is still entirely up to the mother/host and I don't believe in criminalizing stupidity-while-pregnant.
Wether you believe or not in criminalizing stupidity while pregnant is not really the point. The legal rights of fetus have been recognized in many states especially regarding drug use of the mother during pregnancy.

The Unborn Victims of Violence Act of 2004  is a United States law which recognizes a child in utero as a legal victim, if they are injured or killed during the commission of any of over 60 listed federal crimes of violence. The law defines "child in utero" as "a member of the species Homo sapiens, at any stage of development, who is carried in the womb". This law makes an exception of abortion.

ETA: I know that does not apply to OP, more so since this whole thing is MUD.

  • Oh wow, this really is an incredible story! I am so sorry for all that you've been through, i can't even imagine what any of it feels like. I just want to say a huge THANK YOU for reminding me of what really matters in life and how all the things that right now to me seem like first world problems in reality are just nothing. I whish you a quick recovery and that you will soon be able to enjoy your pregnancy and your little miracle baby!
