Care.com question

I posted an ad for a babysitter on care.com and got a good reply. I was thinking of asking her to come by one day to meet us and the kids. Is this a normal / reasonable request? I don't want it to be an interview per se but I need to meet someone who will potentially be taking care of my kids obviously!! The problem is I don't even know what I would ask her when she came...any suggestions? She mentioned that she has references so I would definitely get those from her.

Re: Care.com question

  • We used Care.com for nannies in the past when I was working. I would DEFINITELY do a phone screen first. Some of them sound totally loony when you actually talk to the them, like the girl who applied to take care of my three kids 4 and under (at the time) and said, "Well, I'm not a real high energy person, if you're looking for that."

After the phone screen, I would invite them over for a short interview/meeting where I had the kids there and had some questions to ask as well. The questions were really secondary to just meeting them and seeing how they interacted with the kids. You can get some questions online. I could get a sense right away usually of whether or not they might work out. Then, I would check references. For some, we even then did a "test day" before actual hire, but this was for a nanny, not just an occasional babysitter.

  • Absolutely! Every sitter I've ever used care.com or not I asked them to come to the house and meet. I obviously had to meet them in person before they got the job (they would have to do that for ANY job on the planet) and I wanted to see them interact a bit with DD. Totally reasonable request! Don't feel like you have to pay for that time either. You could even suggest 'trial time' like 1hr or something while you are at home and they watch the kid/s in the yard or something.
