Sushi- in particular Tuna!

Okay as a disclaimer, I searched the boards and couldn't find what I needed!

I have seen on these boards that some women have no problem eating sushi during pregnancy. I couldn't remember if anyone had mentioned tuna specifically. Me and DH are going to sushi tonight and my favorite roll has spicy tuna in it and albacore tuna on top. I would like to have one tuna roll then switch over to california rolls, crab rolls, etc.

I was wondering what everyones thought was on having tuna rolls? And if anyone has any other suggestions for other types of rolls for me to try that would be awesome!

Re: Sushi- in particular Tuna!

  • The tuna jury still seems to be out, but some more recent articles have advised just to steer clear. If we're talking raw tuna (or raw anything for that matter,) I would err on the side of caution, but that's just me. The thing is, even if it's perfectly harmless, if you're a worrier or might second guess yourself later, why not just skip it? As for other rolls to try, I love dynamite rolls, ebi rolls, yam tempura rolls... And if you're looking for a fish alternative with a bit of kick, see if they have a salmon tempura roll with spicy mayo/sauce - this one's my favourite. Have fun and do whatever you're comfortable with that will bring you the most enjoyment out of your sushi!

Sushi is fine, provided you go somewhere reputable and that you've eaten at without problem before. Tuna - the issue is the mercury, which is a cumulative thing. Have you had a lot of tuna recently? Do you plan to eat a lot of tuna in the coming days/weeks? If not, enjoy whatever you want and don't stress it.
I haven't had any tuna since I have been pregnant and I don't plan on making it a regular occurrence, so I guess that makes me feel better on the topic! All I had read was avoid tuna on other pregnancy sites, but I didn't see how 1-2 rolls every few months could really do harm. Thank you!

  • One tuna roll will be fine, especially if you haven't had any high mercury fish since you got pregnant.  I am with you, I prefer the albacore and tuna stuff to everything else, so I have had to get creative with my sushi ordering.

  • I have eaten toro sashimi on the reg... My kids seem pretty not brain damaged so I think if you have it on occasion yourself, you will be fine.
  • FYI, about spicy tuna. MOST places do tend to use their lower quality tuna for this. (They're not going to waste toro or premium bits) I still would eat it because spicy tuna is so f-ing good but just something of which to be aware.

  • I've had a couple tuna rolls and some hamachi since getting pregnant. Since you haven't had any tuna yet I think you're in the clear for some rolls tonight. This is making me want some tonight too.
  • My OB said no more than 12Oz of tuna
  • Maybe I'm a big risk taker but when we were in vancouver for our anniversary we had sushi, specifically sashimi two days in a row. Mind you I think it was only 4 or 6 pieces of sashimi I ate between the two days and I doubt that's more than 6oz. I am a HUGE sushi lover, eating the cooked or non fish alternatives just doesn't cut it; I might as well not even have it if that's all I allow myself to have. Now I only go once a month instead of once a week. Enjoy your dinner!

The limitations have nothing to do with sushi or sashimi, they are for fish with high levels of mercury, including tuna. Doesn't matter if it's raw or cooked. You can find a list of high mercury fish on Google. Barring that, you could eat as much sushi or sashimi as you want.

Sushi in America is treated before it is sold, so all the websites who gasp over it are just fear mongering or talking about other countries.

As far as the mercury, even the FDA, one of the most conservative institutions about food safety, says you can have the worst offender in the mercury category (canned chunk albacore) at least once a week. You have mercury in your body right now, it' mere existence isn't what is dangerous, it's stuffing your face daily with high mercury levels that is dangerous. And you could say the same about any food.

The ONLY thing you need to worry about is raw shellfish, because bacteria grow on it like a hothouse even after treatment. The normal immune system can handle it, but compromised systems can't.

  • My OB has tuna on the "good" fish list (i.e. 1 to 2 servings per week).

I do miss me some California rolls. I don't eat the raw sushi, but even the cooked makes me nervous. I've been erring on the side of caution cause... Murphy's Law.

Vancouver (my home) has great sushi! How could u not!?
  • Go for it girl! Enjoy your sushi!
  • Now I want a California Roll mmmm
  • I think you're right to not worry about it. @Peledreamsofrain‌ is right that the FDA's a bit conservative in their limits. I've had sushi twice without a thought. I mean, IMO, if an entire nation of Japanese women don't get hung up about it, why should I worry?
  • Now I'm craving sushi. Especially tuna. No way am I driving the half hour it takes to get to the nearest sushi place though :-/. I'm glad you enjoyed yours!

  • I was in Vancouver recently and missed sashimi terribly. Cooked rolls just aren't the same. I'm going to revisit this at my next ob appointment but reading this board makes me feel less stressed about sushi in general!

  • This thread is make me want ALL THE SPICY TUNA sushi. But I am a scaredy cat. Lately when I get a craving, I order a baked salmon or shrimp tempura roll. It mostly hits the spot!

My husband was adamant about NO SUSHI- he was terrified. Then I did some research and actually showed him this thread and it calmed both of our nerves. I agree with most of the limitations for food and pregnancy, but I don't want to be neurotic over 2 sushi rolls. I still eat lunch meat too (GASP) and have caffeine (DOUBLE GASP) but I think all is okay in moderation. ;)
