Gardening while baby is sleeping...

I am just curious as to what the consensus is on this.

We are looking at getting a baby monitor that has a range of about 950 feet, meaning that DH could actually get outside when LO is sleeping and do some stuff in the garden. Our garden is up to 170ft away from the house so we never left the house when LO was sleeping because we wouldn't be able to hear her. I'm not saying he would go that far, probably only around the main garden which is about 80ft away.

Would you feel comfortable doing this? How far away are you willing to go from the house when LO is sleeping?

  • My monitor says it has a range of 900ft but I can barely make it off the deck before it errors to "out of range". But I would go farther if I could!
ah never thought of that aspect!

  • Agree with all of the above ^ I use a video monitor and it covers my 1/4 acre yard just fine. If they are consistent nappers I think you could  leave them for a while and just check in every 10-20 mintues for the duration you know they usually sleep. The window open sounds like a good idea, too. Unless you live on a large estate or something, I can't imagine too much could happen or you would be that far.

  • Thanks ladies. Our house is on a rise so when you are in the garden its pretty hard to hear even with the window open. Going by what you are saying we would still have issues with the monitor then.

basically we will keep doing what we are doing - checking in every 10 mins or so! lol.

  • At the cottage after LO is in bed we go down to the water or campfire, 150-200 feet away. As long as you're in range, you're good!
  • I can walk a block away to pick my daughter up from preschool and my monitor works fine I have a Motorola video monitor and have had no issues.
  • My daughter and I have been playing outside while DS naps inside since he was born! I'd have zero issue with him gardening nearby.

  • Yep. I do this all the time. With us moving even if she was awake I would just let her play in the pack n play and go in and out to the car to unload boxes. I water flowers, weed and take out the trash no problem with the monitor on when she is napping.

  • I have over 2 acres, I can probably get 1/2 an acre away before my monitor starts going out (Motorola something) and I do that about once a day when the baby is sleeping so that I can take the dog out, work on the barn or get the mail. If you think the garden is too far for signal just make sure baby is somewhere safe so that if they wake while you're out of range the worst thing they could do is cry while waiting.
  • If I didnt garden when  LO was asleep I never would :)

I totally go in the yard while he sleeps , with the video monitor.

  • At our last house we were very good friends with our next door neighbors. Our video monitor was in range in their garage where we would hang out after bedtime. I'm not sure if I'd still do the same with an audio only one though

  • With DD1 I went to a backyard party at the neighbors after putting her to bed- front door was locked, I could see the back, and the monitor was on & with me.

  • Do it all the time - our monitor has a range of 1000 ft (I think), and we were always outside after he was asleep for the day doing yard work. Like PP have said, worst thing that happened was he cried for a little longer since I had to go inside and wash my hands before getting to him.
