Another main reason I'm still pumping is because formula is so damn expensive. Just throwing that out there. My reasons to keep pumping are just as "selfish" as my reasons to quit.
this... is like 80% why I'm still going. The other 20% is because know how much she hated formula (or at least the brand thr hospital had) in the hospital. The ped changed her mind about supplementing (to get an exact calorie count when she lost that initial weight and dropped below 3 lbs) when she saw what it did to her. She was a miserable pukey ball of gas.
I was thinking of starting on a sensitive formula since she's so damn gassy.
you can always mix bm and formula. like 50/50 I hear that's a good way to start.
It's certainly doable to get baby back to the breast. I've seen it at three weeks, six weeks and as late as about three mos!!
it entails first seeing if there is an anatomical issue that caused the trouble to begin with. Tongue tie lip tie side it posterior ties are common reasons for latching issues and milk transfer problems.
Then it's usually a matter of mom keeps trying and is more stubborn than baby is.
Eping always seems like an easy answer when pumping takes less time than nursing a newborn that takes forever to eat and is painful to nurse. But eping is a really tough road to go down. It is doable but comes takes up a lot of time and a huge commitment.
Agreed. We've already had a couple of follow ups with pediatric ENT who did the frenulectomy to address the anatomical issues. Now it's totally a matter of me staying persistent despite how hard it can be. EPing and breastfeeding take an incredible deal of determination!
@conradraging you could always try a formula that is for supplementing, especially if you're undecided about if you want to continue pumping. The LC who worked with us suggested gerbers good start supplementing because it's the most like breast milk (according to her). My LO has had no issues going back and forth between BM and that formula either.
I cut down pumps and was able to go about 5 hours in between each before I got so engorged that I had to. I am pretty sure I'm going to just slowly go longer and longer between pumps and see what happens with my supply. If it's still decent, then cool. If not, I'm fine with switching to formula.
I do have samples on one that's for supplementing but I'm worried about her being gassy because she's already gassy on bm and I know similac advanced doesn't sit well with her. I think I'm going to start with enfamil gentlease and see how it goes.
Ok all you EPers, what do you do with your babe while you pump?? I don't EP but I do pump 2x a day and LO usually cries through it.
I usually pump right after feeding her so she's less likely to fuss. And if she does I put her in front of me in her bouncer and kind of bounce it with my foot and talk to her while I do.
It pretty much doesn't matter how I time it, or what I do with her, LO screams almost every time I pump. I have tried feeding her first, feeding her after, laying her beside me, feeding her during, and doing 15 kinds of rocking acrobatics as I hold her in every possible position. This is the #1 reason I've worked so hard to move away from EPing and back to breastfeeding.
I tried to offer LO the breast once last night and once this morning and both times she screamed and pushed me away, and I ended up in tears feeding her a bottle. So I don't really care how "hard" EPing is, because the rejection is harder.
This!! I worked with a LC for days in the hospital. We tried everything!! DS refused and would actually start hyperventilating. That would get me upset and it just isn't worth seeing him that upset if I know I can still get him the nutrients from ep-ing. We both are so much happier and less stressed.
Hey ladies I'm not EPing anymore, does anyone want to take over the check in for the rest of you saints who are stronger than I?
I guess I could start it... and good luck with everything @conradraging ! all the bm she got already is great You're strong for sticking through as long as you did! (even stronger than I would be if I was by myself!!!)
Looks like I'll be joining the BFing check-in after working up to 2 full days of almost exclusively the breast, which I'm ecstatic about. I'm so proud of all the progress LO has made over the last month! It has been hard and painful, but I was getting ready to throw the towel in for EPing. Good luck ladies! I know it's not easy, and no offense, but I hope I don't have to join you again!
