Success after IF

Talk to me about fibroids/ polyps/ cysts...

For past six months or so I've been having funky cycles. I'll spot for as long as a week, have a 3 day period and then spot for another few days. That leaves me with about an 11-12 day bleeding period. True CD1 to CD1 is about 24-27 days with a positive OPK on CD10 or 11. This happened right after I weaned the boys, but went away after a few months. It's back now and showing no signs of leaving!!

The OB is sending me for a sonohysterogram to evaluate for polyps/ fibroids and the associated ultrasound will look for ovarian cysts. My question is for those of you will a history of fibroids, polyps, or ongoing cysts: can you tell me about your experience? What were your symptoms? Did you need treatment? If so, what was it? I just like to prepare myself for all options and ask informed questions, so I want to make sure I'm ready for my follow-up.

And, being that so many of us obtained medical degrees at Google University...what are the chances that this is just wonky hormones? I can't help but think that might be an issue too.

Re: Talk to me about fibroids/ polyps/ cysts...

  • I have only dealt with cysts. I had one rupture at age 15 which was crazy painful but required no intervention. I took BCP from age 19-28 which kept cysts at bay. Then had several cysts while taking IF drugs. One was big enough to require 21 days of BCP to shrink it. I don't think I had any symptoms with those cysts during IF treatment.

  • I had a history of cysts and polyps. I had to have a d and c twice to remove polyps but the cysts went away on their own.., I was in the middle of preparing for an ivf cycle so I am not sure if the polyps would have had to be removed if we were not doing this. Hope this helps!

  • I have had a mix of all three. They have been painful at times, mostly causing cramping, but they have  really only been a problem for me prior to an IVF cycle. I had a hysteroscopy prior to IVF #2 to remove some polyps and fibroids, and it was NBD. I had some cramping and bleeding the day of and the day after, but nothing too bad. I am on BCP now (even though there is <1%) mostly to control my heavy periods and cyst formation.

  • My RE discovered polyps during my mock transfer for IVF #1, and did a hysterocopy/D&C to remove them before moving forward with my cycle.  She felt that the polyps were taking up valuable real estate on my uterine wall, which might preclude the embryo(s) from sticking, due to lack of space.  Not sure if it was a factor for us or not, but the first cycle worked like a charm.

I was lucky not to have a repeat of this for IVF #2, and it too was a success on the first try.  I didn't have any symptoms before my doctor noticed them.

  • @KaraBear4409‌- I had one before my first IVF cycle and remember it being NBD, but my RE was insanely gentle. There's a part of me that wanted to ask my OB to send me to the RE because that wand and I are already such besties! I figured it'd be easier. I'm just hoping I don't get a rookie at the radiology place!

@bellalou32‌ - It's actually my OB ordering things since it is an issue associated with my cycle length/ dysfunctional uterine bleeding. We aren't officially TTC right now. How are you feeling this week?

Can those of you that had a hysteroscopy/ D&C tell me about your recovery? We don't have local family or daytime child care, so I'd need to figure out if/ how long my mom or MIL would need to come to watch the boys. The OB said that might be an option, depending on the results of Friday's SHG, so I'd like to be prepared.

  • I've had problems with cysts.  But, they tend to relate with being on birth control pills or other suppression meds.  I've had two hysterscopies with cyst aspirations and an in office (no anesthesia) cyst aspiration.  They have tried BCPs to get rid of them.  But, then they come back when I stop them.  I tend to not get a period with my ovarian cysts.  They produce estrogen and just kind of hang around.

During one of my hysteroscopies, they removed a polyp.  I didn't have any symptoms of it.   I also have a fibroid but is on the outside of my uterus.  It grows when my estrogen gets higher (on stims or pregnant) and causes pain.  It was more of a concern when I was pregnant.  Due to its size and location, it was not recommended to have it removed as it would cause damage to my uterus.

I used to have really heavy periods.  That reduced some when I had a laparoscopy and had endo removed.  That is getting worse again.  But, I don't really want to do another lap.

Good luck!  I hope your tests go well.

Hysteroscopy was super easy and caused some bleeding and cramping but I recovered pretty quickly (took the day of off work and was back the next day).  It was so much better than my lap!  But, while I had a polyp removed and a cyst aspirated each time, I don't think they did an actual D&C.  Also, one of the polyps didn't show up on SHG.
