Pregnant after a Loss

Talk me down re: movement?

Baby has not been moving much over the last day. He definitely has spurts of more movement lately and I have felt some movement very very low in my belly but not his normal kicks. I know I'm only nearing 25 weeks but his movement just became much more consistent. Talk me down?

  • It's probably nothing. Drink something sugary and sit still for a bit. You are still a little too early to worry about kick counts. Call the ob if it continues and youre nervous.

I had times like that.  She'd be kind quiet for a few days, then normal, then pretty active, and back to being quiet.  It freaked me out many times.  I talked to my old NP about it at 22 weeks and she said that movement could be variable until closer to 28 weeks.  When I saw my current ob at 27+5, I asked about movement again.  She said that I'd still have quiet days and active days until the very end, but that if I was worried to drink a glass of ice water and wait 30 min.  If I felt nothing, she wanted me to call.  So far, I have not had to call.  She also said that she would rather I have to come in 30 times to check on LO than for me to sit around at home worried, but as I said, I never have needed to do that.

I will say that from 28-32 weeks, I drank A LOT of ice water.  I very rarely have to do that now, but it still happens.

I had something similar happen a few weeks ago. I had been feeling a lot of movement very consistently for about two weeks, and then one night I felt almost nothing. The next morning and afternoon were the same, just a couple kicks here and there when I had been feeling a ton before. It totally freaked me out!

Oops hit post too soon! I started doing kick counts a couple times a day and that really helped to put my mind at ease. Even though it wasn't as much as I was feeling, I still got 10 kicks with in an hour easily, which is considered normal.

So, I would start by drinking some water or juice or have a sugary snack, lay down on your side, and count how many kicks or movements you feel. The goal is 10 in an hour.

This time I'm not leaving without you.
  • I agree with PP about having a snack and/or cold drink and seeing if baby perks up. Also, lie on your side. As far as I know, 25 weeks is still early for consistent movement, so I wouldn't worry! If LO doesn't perk up, though, you should go ahead and call up your OB. She can talk you down or get you checked out.

  • I'm with you. My little guy goes through days of consistent movement, then slows down.. It's so random. Terrible for PGAL brain.
I hope he calms your fears soon. HUG

  • I was panicking because I have been feeling LO fairly consistently since 18 weeks, and suddenly about half way between 21&22 weeks I felt nothing for about 2 days. I called my midwife and he said LO was likely going through a growth spurt and sleeping long stretches instead of being active. I believe babies go through a second big growth spurt around the 25 week mark, so it's possible that's what's happening with you!! FX you start feeling more regular movement shortly and you can relax!!

  • Whenever I had moments like this in my previous pregnancies, I would drink a huge glass if cold orange juice and a sugary snack and lay on my left side in the quiet until I felt enough movement. It's still early to feel consistent movement. I hope you're able to relax a bit :)

  • I had this happen! My MW said position can affect the movement we are used to feeling as well as the baby is just having a quiet day :). I always thought of it as he was resting bc he was going through a growth spurt! :). FX he's extra active today though to help ease your concern mama :).

  • I think we have all had this happen.

My LO tends to have one very active day followed by a pretty quiet one where I have to drink something cold, lay down, and concentrate onevery bodily function to feel her movement, even now at 28+ weeks -- and that's after being told that my LO is one of the more active ones that my MFM has seen at this stage.

I'd get some guidance from the OB at this point & I wouldn't start kick counts unless s/he tells you to do that.  From what I've been told it's too early at 25 weeks for consistent movement and I would hate for you to get even more worked up by doing this....

  • ((Hugs)) This happened to me, too! So many times. I echo the PPs who say it's still too early to get concerned over regular movement, since kick counts normally don't start until 28 weeks. I know PgAL brain doesn't care, though!

FWIW, I started noticing a pattern that if baby was really active one day, then the following day he'd be pretty lazy. Almost like he tired himself out from all the movement the day before. It really freaked me out at first before I noticed it was kind of his M.O.
  • This was me today. VB was practically silent this morning when she is usually a dancing machine. I had my 30w appointment today and my OB said essentially what the other ladies said; that is, sometimes baby is quiet because like you and me she has to sleep. Too, if you haven't had much to eat or drink baby may be feeling lazy.

OB said to have something to eat or drink some juice when this happens and baby should start wiggling.

Sorry you are feeling anxious. It's the worst!

  • No advice, but you are definitely not alone! My little guy has been extra lazy the last 3 or 4 days and I've been worrying like crazy. Every now and again he gives me a tiny little kick which helps but it still doesn't help the PGAL brain to relax :(
