Totally NBR or important at all; Panera Bread

Is it just me or are Panera Bread's portions going way down and their prices going up?!?

My H is gone tonight, so I picked up Panera Bread for myself since I didn't feel like cooking. The total was $9 for a half sandwich and half salad.

I wish I would have taken a pic of it before I devoured it. The sandwich was literally like 5 bites, and the salad was a few wilted pieces I lettuce and 3 croutons. Hmph! I guess this is why I shouldn't get fast food!

Re: Totally NBR or important at all; Panera Bread

  • I would love to get Panera over BK or McDs but the prices are ridiculous. The other night I gave DH the choice between Panera or Boston Market. He chose Boston Market bc for almost the same price we would get more food.

I feel like a lot of places cut down on portions while keeping the prices the same or raising them! I haven't been to Panera since maybe early this year with DS.

Based on the commercials I wish we had a Panera! It looks yummy and healthy! If we got one now I would have no frame of reference. Sorry

Edit cuz my phone is dumb
  • I've always feel like the portions are on the smaller side too! We don't go there much since chipotle is a block away from our panera.

  • I just got soup and half sandwich, and I agree, the sandwich was tiny this time. Sometimes it's huge though. But, they are always expensive.
  • I noticed too ! Even their "whole sandwiches" are much much smaller than they used to be. I tried the cranberry/turkey flat bread the one night when H was working and it was the tiniest thing ever. I could make that myself for 1/4 of the price and it would be twice as big

  • When I was pregnant with DD I ate their Greek salads 2-3 times a week.  They used to give the full sized salad with the you pick two.  I went recently and it was a half salad.  Womp womp.

  • I definitely agree. DH basically orders two full meals when we go which is rarely eventhough we have one close by. Usually for the same price or less we can go to a nicer restaurant so they is usually what we choose. We are fortunate to live in a more "trendy" area and one of the biggest culinary schools in the country is in the city so there are way more local/speciality restaurants than chains.
  • Hmm, I don't know. A couple days ago I got a tuna sandwich and it was surprisingly huge. When I get the half sandwich I'm always disappointed, so I was quite surprised.
  • I've never had panera bread and it's across the street lol, I've always wanted to try it though.

But aren't you in the land of Schlotzsky's and Jason's Deli?  Panera is good, but the other two trump it.
That is true, Schlotzsky's is pretty awesome!

  • All I know is that the portion of salad dressing that give out could not possibly be any smaller. Hi, thanks can I have 10 of those with my salad?

  • It's been a long time since I've posted but I used to work for Panera as well I quit the end of June. I was a Shift manager and depending on what time of day you go really depends on how well things are made. As for sandwich sizes all the breads are made in store so that depends on the baker and the temperature of the store on how big the bread is all the other portions are portioned out according to Panera corporate guidelines. I'm sure I'll break someones heart by saying the mac-n-cheese is a prepackaged portions that comes in frozen so that size is always going to be the same. Every sandwich meat is weighed out according to Panera prep sheets to weigh 1.7oz give or take a tenth. They have changed their pricing on a lot of things you now add the two "pick-two" prices to get your cost. So and can be cheaper than before the restructure of prices or slightly more expensive. I've gotten a little long winded here but hope that helps some of you.

  • I love the Mediterranean veggie sandwich there!

  • Hmmmm...that's interesting to know that everything is supposed to be measured to the same size.

I think part of the problem was that I ordered it to-go through the drive through. Everything was packaged separately in a box instead of plated nicely together. When a sandwich is thrown by itself into a box much larger than it, and it just slides around, it looks so small and wimpy.

I still think that the prices are going up. $9 was too expensive for what I got IMO.
