Pregnant after a Loss

intro

Hey all, been lurking for awhile but thought I'd finally say hi. I lost my twin girls at 20 wks last Nov. During emergency d&c to remove my placenta doc discovered I had a complete uterine septum. After many u/s, a couple mri's, and finally a surgery we got the green light in July. And we just recently found out I'm pregnant! Yay! 4 wks 1 day

Questions right of the bat: After my twins loss my sister lost her pregnancy. This will be the first grandbaby in my family after three losses now. Any advice on how to share the excitment with the family? Just not really sure how to go about announcing it when they have already been let down too many times.

Looking forward to getting to know everyone!

Re: intro

  • Congrats and welcome! I have no advice on family. I told my immediate family the day I found out, but waited a while to tell the rest of my family-- which was cool because I'm a big blabber mouth.

  • Congrats! I agree with the PP. It's going to be hard for your sister. Definitely give her time to process it alone.

  • I'm so sorry for the loss of your sweet girls ((((hugs)))). Congratulations on this new pregnancy and I completely echo @Megdowntheshore‌ in her recommendation to approach sharing the news with your sister first and very delicately.

  • Welcome and congrats. I would definitely tell your sister privately so she doesn't have to digest the news in front of everybody else. Don't be hurt if she's upset. Both of my SIL's had healthy pregnancies after my multiple losses and it was really excruciating for me. I love my nieces so much, but seeing their pregnancies was challenging. Maybe it will be different for her and she'll just be happy and hopeful for herself when she hears your news. I told my family really early this time. They wanted to be there for us whether it worked out or not. I'm glad that I had them as support.
This.  My SIL and brother announced their pregnancy as a surprise last Christmas in front of the entire family, and after only being a couple months out from my first loss, I didn't handle it well.

Congrats to you and welcome!! :)
  • Thanks all for the great advice! Definitely feel much better about it now!
  • Congratulations!

Don't share until you feel ready. Also I would be super sensitive with your sister. As you know it is very hard to watch others get pregnant after you've had a loss. Maybe tell her when no one else is around so she can process on her own and feel however she needs to feel about it and not have the pressure of others looking/listening.
