One & Done: Only child

What to get the woman that likes nothing?

I don't think I have ever discussed my stepmother here-- but her birthday is on Sunday and I am stuck for a gift.

My typical go to is to send a floral arrangement-- but since I am going over on Sunday for a visit, I feel the need to give her something more tangible.  We have a very hot and cold relationship, but she loves DD dearly, so I was thinking it could be a gift from DD?

She doesn't like much.  I have her clothing style pegged-- but she's always weird about what size you get her.  If you buy her a large (her size) she gets offended.  If you buy her the medium (the size she claims to be) she complains that she can't wear it/ it doesnt fit her.

She's not overly feminine, so the typical go to/ non sized things don't work-- so no scarves, handbags, jewelry, perfume.

She's s huge wine drinker, but I am hesitant to buy wine because she has very specific and expensive taste.

Gift cards are not an option-- she's a disaster and will lose it (she doesn't carry a wallet or purse- she ususally shoves some random cash and CCs in her pocket.)

I'd like to spend about 50.00-- any suggestions would be great-- HALP ME!

  • @namastebiotches-- I did think of that and mentioned it to my dad, but he told me she's dieting.  For the three millionth time.

  • Loading the player...
  • Maybe a voucher for a wine tasting, something like that, or is that too much like a gift card. Maybe look into online equivalents for gift cards. I have received gift cards for online stores through email.
I agree with the wine tasting, maybe even offer to go with her. May not be your thing but would probably make her happy.

To the bolded-- depends on the day-- LOL.

It's not a bad idea in theory, but she's overly involved in my little (half) sister's travelling volleyball team, and she's hard to pin down for a day trip.

Since you aren't sending flowers, why don't you show up with them instead? That way you bring something but you don't have to kill yourself trying to think of something that she won't care about. Or maybe even instead of flowers, a cool plant or terrarium?
That's actually not a bad idea-- I just always imagine it's more fun to get them thru the mail?  But this might be the winner, winner chicken dinner right here.  Thanks ladies!

  • As a wine thing in general, we have a few of these and they're great : https://www.oxo.com/p-857-wine-stopperpourer-combination.aspx

  • I also have a stepmother like that!

My go tos for her are always flowers or something DS related. Last year I had him paint a flower pot and then we put flowers in. She loved it! I also gave her a small bouquet of cut flowers to go with it.

Another thing we did was get a couple really cut tea cups with some good teas inside. I grew up in London so for us it had sentimental value too, but not sure if it would work for you.
