Opinions on doctor office

I went in for a regular appointment (15 weeks) and I waited TWO HOURS to see my doctor.

I complained multiple times and told them I had places to be and I also had my two year old with me who can't last that long sitting in a waiting room with nothing to do. They gave ME attitude about rushing them.

I finally got in to see the nurse and heard the baby's heart beat which is really all I cared about. She leaves and I'm waiting for my dr. Another 20 minutes. I walked out and said I'm leaving. I don't have time for this. They said I could reschedule...there is no way I am going back to reschedule...I already waited this long. I'll see you at 20 weeks.

Then my daughter dropped my phone and it shattered :(

Rough morning.

Rant over but what would you do about this? Stick with the practice and hope it was just a one time thing or look for another??

  • I wouldn't go back. The medical field is just as bound by customer service as anything else you pay for. Putting up with shitty service just encourages them.

  • Exactly! I told the receptionist that I knew it wasn't her fault this happened, but it would have been nice to get a call to reschedule BEFORE I came in and wasted my whole morning.

  • Wow 2 hours that is ridiculous! I would have left earlier! My old doctor was always an hour late it drove me nuts! But if you are 15 mins late you have to reschedule! If the doctor was called away they should have let you know! That is not right! I would find a new doctor!
  • I wouldn't go back. If they would have at least given you an explanation then I'd probably consider giving them one more chance. But with their attitude hell no.

I'm surprised you waited. I work full time and my doctors appointment timeframes are on a schedule, especially in the morning. I can't believe no one told you why the wait was so long, but I would definitely reconsider doctors after something like that.

Exactly! My appointments are scheduled very very meticulously to fit just right into mine and SO's work schedule so that we can both be there and there is not much wiggle room there. Plus I schedule all apts in the morning cuz the later they are the more backed up they get and the longer you have to wait. We have considered taking 2 cars before but feel that is ridiculous cuz it shouldn't take that long and ours never does just the normal sitting and waiting to be called to the window then a few minutes later called back. Idk my office is quite large it is a10 doctor/midwife office and they have so many people doing so many different things that if one area is backed up they can have you do something else lol but I would say give it one more shot and the benefit of the doubt and see what happens. It may have just been a fluke that time. Hope all goes well!!

  • I wouldn't go back. Someone should have told you what was going on and taking that long. I had my 16 week appt yesterday and the nurse took me 10 mins early. I waited maybe 15 mins for the doctor, in that time the nurse came back twice to let me know the dr was in a procedure and the mom was having a rough time and it would be a little while for me. I can't imagine 2 hours! I'm sorry you went through that and I hope you can find a better doctor and office!

    I'd say fuck that noise.

My last appointment my doc was called away for surgery. So the office rescheduled me, then CALLED me immediately. They explained the issue, told me when they had rescheduled me for, then asked if that worked or if I needed to change the appointment. They were proactive and very polite. I was in the following day. No sweat.

If they make you wait 2 hours without communication for an appointment, how do you think your birth will go? I'd find someone who values my time a little more.
  • If you like the office I'd give them another chance. If you are iffy on them anyway maybe find another. I am generally not a patient person when waiting (not to mention 2 hrs is trying at best!) but you never know what emergency came up that may have been occupying the doctor. A regular appointment may have turned into an emergency or god forbid a loss of some sort that the doctor needed to attend to for much longer than expected.

Are there other docs in the practice? One of the doctors where I go is notoriously late so I just see someone else generally.
  • My doctor was an hour late for my last appointment due to a delivery, and the nurse updated me three times. I agree with PP's if you generally like the office give them one more try. If not, find somewhere else.
  • I have been with this practice and one of their doctors even delivered my DD 2 years ago...no issues.

What worries me is that their explanation for the wait was that they scheduled 20 patients for one doctor today and that "happens sometimes". Well, it shouldn't.

I think I'm going to give another chance and hope this was just a one time thing...

  • Hate to be the naysayer (and I do think 2 hours without an explanation is excessive), but with medical practices going the way they are going, providers have just as much pressure to see patients as car salesmen have to sell cars. It is becoming a world of overbooking and attempts to cram as many patients as possible into a day. So, like I said, while 2 hours is excessive and it seems like that particular practice has a problem, I would encourage compassion towards the providers. I always apologize when I'm running late to see patients, and I rarely go over an hour, but sometimes we get walk-ins or urgent procedures that need to be fit in. I don't like running late and I especially don't like getting home late, but this is what medicine has become. I prefer seeing providers that spend the time with me, but I know that sometimes means I need to wait. If you prefer timely providers, the trade off may be that they seem cold and impersonal as they are required to see patients in 5 or 10 minutes to keep on schedule. I wish we could change the system and be able to have longer appointment slots so that providers could give adequate and timely care, but I cannot imagine that happening any time soon.
  • Oh wow!  I had to wait about 15 minutes yesterday and got an apology from the nurse saying it was crazy with people coming in to get flu shots (it was walk-in flu shot day).  I'd definitely switch.  That's stressful and no need to go through that every 4 or 2 weeks.  If you're comfortable with it maybe find a practice that utilized midwifes, as I find they tend to have shorter waiting periods compared to the OBs in my city.  Which was also kind of ridiculous because a midwife appointment would last 45 minutes and an OB appointment only lasts 20.
