Pregnant after a Loss

What to do for real bad headache?

i called the OB but they are closed for lunch (and i can't even leave a message ugh) anyway do y'all have any suggestions on what to do for a really bad headache? I know i can have tylenol (doesn't help much) but not sure what else to do and hate to take meds unless I have to. I have been told by doc in the past no NSAIDS (for pregnancy and they react badly to my UC medicine), no herbal teas. I tried putting heat on my head, and cold. I tried breathing in steam from hot shower running while i sat in the bathroom. Hubby massaged my neck, shoulders, face and head. This was last night and the headache seems to be gone, but I am prone to headaches so just wonder if anyone has any other safe remedies while pregnant. Thanks.

Re: What to do for real bad headache?

  • I usually try to lie down in a dark room and take a little nap.  I feel like headaches just won't go away for me without sleeping.  A little sugar and caffeine can help, too.

  • Tylenol + some caffeine could help as long as your OB is fine with that.  If it gets really bad, try to sleep it off.

Hopefully some of the headaches will subside as you get further into the pregnancy.  I was a frequent sufferer of bad headaches & muscle spasm in my neck, and after the 1st tri mine became much less frequent.  It is one of the better perks of pregnancy thus far.

  • I faced the same scenario last week and an awesome bumpie ( @Birch113‌ ) suggested drinking Gatorade or something else with a good electrolyte balance. That definitely helped me out quite a bit. Hope your headache goes away soon!

  • The only thing that works for me is a combo of Tylenol and caffeine and a nap in a dark quiet room.

I am prone to Migraines too and it's awful not being able to take anything stronger than Tylenol.

Hope you don't get that many.

  • Tylenol, a can of Diet Coke, an ice pack and a nap normally do the trick for me.  Like a PP said, I had them pretty bad in First Tri but they have been much better recently.  Good luck!

  • I try to make sure I am well hydrated. And then the Tylenol caffeine combo. If that doesn't work I have an oil aroma diffuser so I put some lavender oil in there turn it on and try for a nap.
  • Why no massage? Are you not over 12 weeks? (Just curious) :) I do Tylenol and a shower and hydrate. A bit of caffeine can help too. I am also big on essential oils but not sure how you feel about that. Putting my feet in a warm water tub helps too.

  • Caffeine, I like an ice mask, a dark room, lots of extra water and a nap! Feel better. I am also headache prone.

  • Thanks all! I am not a big caffine drinker, i donmt drink coffee or soda but hey if that helps i am willing to try. I have always been prone to migraines and sinus headaches. Luckily this headache is not a migraine or i would be curled on the floor in tears And unable to read your reaponses!

I am at 13w4d and this is the first major headache I have had. I have had a few small ones that tylenol knocked out but this is the first that has been really bad. I am feeling better at the moment but can feel the headache on the edge trying to come back. Caffine it is. Does chocolate count? Lol

  • @BackstreetPixie‌ I just noticed you mentioned sinus headaches. I got a couple in the beginning and my saving grace was saline nasal rinse!
  • I've heard to put your feet and hands in warm water in sink or tub then put a bag of frozen veggies on the back of your neck
  • Drink lots of water. Most headaches are dehydration related.
  • Definite caffeine! I had a bad migraine in Monday and it lasted all day. That day I happened to not have caffeine. It got better the next day after drinking a cup of coffee. I didn't take any Tylenol or anything.

  • @amanda33758 i can't do nasal rinse. The water goes in and never comes out. Until i lay down then goes it down my throat. I nearly drowned when i tried! I had sinus surgery a few years back and I think it left too much room back there.

@jessw9 that big one went away. Had a small one today, drank some sweet tea and it seemed to help. Thanks. =)
