Flu Vaccine

Hello,
I'm having a really hard time deciding whether or not to get the flu shot. I don't usually get a flu shot and am concerned about getting it, but at the same time am worried that something may happen if I don't get it. My doctor said it was up to me, but that in general it is recommended. So, I was just wondering what most of you are doing.

Get it. Your doctor should be strongly encouraging it. Pregnant women have a higher chance of death from the flu.

I never got it before my last pregnancy but got it for the sake of my kid when pregnant, did again when not pregnant but with a 5 month old at home, and again without hesitation this pregnancy. It is what is best for your kid, why question what your doctor advises you to do?

I'm getting it at my AS in two weeks. My dr strongly recommended it. I also work on the public and am around tons of people every day. My mom had a funny reaction to it a couple weeks ago so they are going to keep me for a bit to make sure I'm ok before I go home. I think it's really beneficial and would get it!

I'm not sure what your concerns are about getting it but I got my flu shot at my first OB appointment around 9 weeks and everything is fine with me and the baby.

I went through this discussion with my doctor yesterday and ultimately decided to do it. I've never been pro flu shots before, but it's not about me anymore. Do it for baby!

I was hellbent that I was not getting it because I tend to have terrible reactions to vaccinations. Read: vomiting hard enough to tear an abdominal muscle.

HOWEVER, after doing research and reading discussions on this board, as well as talking to my doctor, I have decided I can't afford not to get it. So I will be getting mine when I go in for my anatomy scan on the 16th. We are hopeful that the version they give to pregnant women in my OB's office will cause less of a reaction for me, we will see.

Why I am getting the vaccine:

1. Passive immunity. Our babies will be born during flu season. With the vaccination, our babies will gain some immunity to the flu.

2. It is dangerous to get the flu while pregnant. It can be fatal to mother and/or baby.

If I weren't pregnant I wouldn't get it. But I'm no longer making decisions just for me.

I'm so glad I came across this thread, I almost didn't click on it because I was afraid of what I would see. After speaking to two doctors and doing some light research of my own I opted to get the flu shot last week. I felt great about the decision until I came across something about it on the internet that made me doubt my choice. I know, why do I keep looking stuff up and doing this to myself?

Since then, I have calmed down and looked a lot further into it and the evidence is really overwhelming that it is a good thing to do.

I got my first flu shot ever on Tuesday. My Dr highly recommended it due to several mothers-to-be in my area getting it last year and dying that were low risk pregnancies. It scares me to think of getting sick enough that I won't be able to keep myself healthy, let alone the baby. I haven't had the flu in over 8 years, but I don't want to risk it this year.

I got one because my OB recommended it. Of course, it would have been nice if the nurse what have looked at my sheet I had to fill out and notice I wrote in block letters that I was allergic to Penicillin. The shot they gave me had a little but thank goodness nothing happened. Maybe I'm cured!

I chose not to. I have never gotten the flu shot. Everyone I know that has gotten it wound up really sick.
It's a personal decision for each of us to make.

I'll repeat what PPs have said, if you search for the previous threads about the flu shot you will find more in depth reasons for why you SHOULD get it. I have never had a flu shot and these ladies knowledge bombed me in the best way. Andplusalso, protect your baby before yourself.

It's so frustrating when people think they shouldn't get it because they're pregnant when really the contrary is true.

The flu shot is made of a dead virus so it's impossible to get ill (more than mild symptoms) from the shot. The nasal mist is not advised for pregnant women since it is a live virus. The flu can be deadly and dangerous for pregnant women since we're considered immune compromised. Besides, having the flu is miserable especially while pregnant!

I'm getting it. I get it every year including when I was pregnant with DD. My OB highly recommends it and I don't think I know better than them and/or the CDC. I'm just waiting for my cold to clear up. I'm sick as hell from a regular cold, I can't imagine having the flu while pregnant.

There is a single does flu shot and a multi dose flu shot. The multi dose flu shot may contain thimerisol, mercury, which is a classified neurotoxin. This ingredient has been removed from most vaccines but not all. Do some research and check with your dr before you decide on exactly which type of flu shot to get. Best of luck! This is just the tip of the iceberg with decision making!

I would definately get it, and will be having mine in the next week or so at work. My friend had her little girl nearly 5 years ago wasn't give the flu jab and 5 days after having her little girl ended up in intensive care in a coma and had double pneumomonia and swine flu. Thankfully she is still with us today and is the strongest lady I know but I would always have it, not just because of my friend but to protect your baby and you. I'm fortunate to get given it at work every year and have had it for last 6-7 years. If it's offered I strongly advise people take it. The side affects are often a dead arm for a day or so and sometimes cold type symptoms but I think they can be dealt with rather than the flu. I've never (touch wood) had the flu but I know a couple people that have and it sounds god damn awful. Xx

My best friend and I are both pregnant and were discussing flu shots and yes or no (she never had it with her first pregnancy, this is my first). Thanks for the info, everyone - I've just rang the doctor and booked in for my shot on Tuesday!
