Baby Names

What's your name and how do you like it?

Switching it from babies to parents for a minute.

What is your name and do you like it, dislike it or not really care?

My first name is Mary Taylor. I have no middle name. The only "complaint" I have is that a lot of people assume my first name is just Mary. I go by my full name so it bothered me growing up. Other than that, I like my name. Never met anyone else with the name :)

Re: What's your name and how do you like it?

  • I'm not comfortable listing my real names, but I will discuss how I feel about them.

My first name is a common filler middle name from the 80's, though I was born in the early 70's.  I've never really liked it, and I like it even less now.

My middle name is not bad, but it doesn't feel like me and I'd never use it.  The biggest problem I have with my names is they all end with the same sound, so if you say my whole name, it gets a bit sing-songy.

I hated my first name, but somehow (my parents didn't plan it) as a small child it was switched with my middle name and so I was always called by my middle name. At 16 I switched them legally so my middle name is now my old first name (that is Philomena)
My first name is very welsh and not common at all, I love it, and love the short version as well

  • My name is Chelsi. I like it. If it wasn't spelt with an I I would hate my name. My moms name was also spelt with an I and it doesn't bother me that I have to spell it for people at all because it's the name my father gave me so I am proud of it.

  • My name is Martha Anne. When I was born my parents were expecting a boy since my mom carried the exact same with me as she did with my older brother. To much to their surprise they didn't have a girls name picked out. My parents discussed/fought over a name for me, for three days until my mom finally became disgusted, and told my father to name me whatever the hell he wants. Since my father has a pretty warped sense of humor, I am lucky my name is not Whatever the hell you want. My father decided to name me after my mother, but spelled her middle name wrong. My mother is Martha Ann.
In elementary school, I hated my name. I wanted to be one of the Jessicas, Christines or Jamies, but that changed in high school, when people said my name I was the only one who needed to answer. Also boys would remember my name because it wasn't generic.
Now as an adult I love my name, I just wish I could pick a name for my LO.

Sorry for the extra long answer.
  • Crystal, I hated it growing up. My mom told me I could change it in the 7th grade if I could find something better. I got baby name books and couldn't find anything that was more me. Lol now I don't mind it.

  • OP, I like your name too.

My name was a top 10 name the year I was born (1980) and has now faded into pretty much obscurity.  It's actually a pretty name, but you can guess my age within 5 years either way from heaing my name-- something I am appreciating less and less as the years pass.  I think some of you know my IRL name.

My middle name (which I did drop to replace with my maiden name when I got married) was Lauren, which I am meh about.

  • My name is Jane. As common as it may seem to be, I don't meet a lot of others in my age range with my name (mid 30's). Growing up, I hated it. Everyone called me Janey, but I guess the only high point is that I was the only one in our high school of 1200 kids.
Now that I'm older, I appreciate how simple it is. I feel like it's classic, never needs to be spelled, and will never go out of style.
  • My name is Nicole.  It's a boring 80's name.  I've always had to be Nicole M. (M is/was not my real last initial).  I always wish had a prettier, less common name.  I hate it when people ask if they can call me Nikki.  Nope. I've never been a Nikki, never will be.

  • I don't post my real name on here, but I can tell you it rhymes with Banana. ;)

I wouldn't consider it misspelled, but it's not the most common spelling and therefore is mispronounced a lot. I like my middle name better (but it is also spelled oddly and is mispronounced a lot as well, so I was screwed either way on that part, haha).

  • My first name I am indifferent towards; it was popular among my age group, but not aggressively so. No one calls me by my first name outside of work. It's not that I have a nickname or anything, just my whole family is big on pet names, so I am "sweetie", "honey", etc far more often than my name is used. I hate my middle name though, which I will share. My mother was a big fan of Mackenzie Phillips, so my middle name is Mackenzie. My bio dad says it's after the Budweiser dog. I just hate it because it means "son of a shepard" and I hate switching the gender use of names when the gender is clearly defined in the meaning of the name.
  • Vanessa and love it.

It really isn't - It is a nun's name, espacially when you are named after well a nun. My Irish cousins would laugh at me because it is so old fashioned

    Jordan.

Hated it growing up. Especially because I got made fun of, being born during Michael Jordan era as a little girl there was a lot of "haha you have a boy name."

Every school I moved to had at least 2 other Jordans (always boys) either in my grade or the grade below mine. In 7th grade my teacher called role and said "Oh! I wasn't expecting a girl!" Irritated the crap out of me.

Now that I'm no longer in school I don't mind it so much. I don't know any female Jordans my age, except 1. My middle name Paige is just Meh to me, but I think that my names go pretty well together.

  • My name became popular about 10 years after I was born and I have a European spelling which is different then most here spell my name. I always liked my name and was they only one in my school with my name for quite a while. I always have to spell ALL my names and it is no big deal(conversation starter) First, middle, maiden and married names all have legitimate spellings, but all have the potential to be spelled differently. When I got to high school, i had another girl in my class with my name but spelled differently. Ten years younger then me, my name is popular.......I did the same thing to my daughter......her name is in the top ten right now. When we named her, it was around 400 on the SS list.
  • Mine's Laura Nicole...I've always found it kind of boring and wished it was different at times. My last name is also plain so the whole thing is just blah. Although I'd rather go by my first & middle than my first & last, I think it sounds better.

My nickname is Pearl...I wish I had gone by it more growing up so that I could still go by it now instead, but my parents stopped it from happening so I didn't get confused when I went to school *sigh*
  • My name is Juliet.  I really like it, probably somewhat more than I did when I was growing up, although I never disliked it.  Only two issues with it: 1. the Romeo jokes (which aren't bad, it just gets old after a while) and 2. it is often misheard as Julia or misspelled.  But I like the Shakespeare reference and the fact that it was very unusual back in the mid '70s.  It's a classic, feminine name that is familiar but not super popular.

My MN before I got married was Anne.  Typical '70s filler name, but it has family meaning and I considered adding it as a second MN for DD.

  • My first name peaked in the '30s-50s and is (I think) in the 900s now. I like it, and I get irked when people say it's an old lady name (which I've heard more than once here). I think it's pretty classic and underused.
  • My name was very uncommon until about ten years ago, so it's rare to meet another adult with my name but I see tons of little girls with it these days, though my spelling (the classical/greek spelling) remains pretty rare.

I have always loved my name. I like the way it sounds and I like the meaning. I also like the inspiration for my name; I'm named after a pop ballad (in a foreign language) from the 70's that my father loved when he was a teenager. That song was my lullaby growing up and he sang the song at my wedding.

My middle name is Joy, a less common 'filler' name but it flows perfectly with my first name, so it works. Oddly, joy and the pursuit/spreading of joy have become very important to me (in a vaguely spiritual sense) as an adult, so it's even more fitting. I think my mom chose it because it flowed with my first name as it is not a family name and holds no special meaning otherwise.

I like my name so much that it makes me feel extra cautious about naming my kids! Especially since DH does not like his name (and never has).
  • My name is Jennifer but I go by Jenny.  I generally like my name but obviously it was very popular in the 80's.  I also hated it when Forrest Gump came out but finally those jokes/references have decreased.

  • Another Emily. I liked it growing up because I was the only one in my grade. My mom was all mad when it got to be #1 in the 90s and 2000s. Since I feel a lot of people associate it with kids and I'm the youngest in my department, I'm forever the "baby". Growing up it didn't matter what my name was because everyone called me by a NN of my LN. Growing up in a tiny town and my dad only had brothers and male cousins so there were a ton of us. Teachers just stopped learning our first names it seemed like. Not my real maiden name but basically like Smith and going by Smitty. When I got to college I was hoping to escape it but my coach called me Smitty and so did my teammates and then everyone else. Same at my first job. Didn't stop until I got married and changed my LN. Now I kind of miss it.

Melissa Sue... I always hated my name because it was super popular within my age group. Now I don't hate it but I don't like it either. I'm still going by "Lyss", a nickname I picked in fourth grade when I didn't want to be called "missy" anymore.

Hate the middle name too because it seems like a filler.

BUT, I'm glad I didn't end up with the other names my mom liked back then. I can't imagine being a Brianna or a Nikki. Caitlin would have been okay with me though.

    Is your name actually Loretta?

I had a great aunt Loretta, and I totally would have considered it for one of my girls. I think it's lovely. However, our last name would make it sound too close to Loretta Lynn, and since we live pretty close to the land of country music, it didn't seem like a good fit for us.

  • My name is Louden Grey and I love my name! My Papa used to tell me the story of my name all the time before he passed away when I was 12. When I was born I was really really sick and weighed four pounds. When he saw me he started calling me Lou after his father who was like 5'3 when he died at 30 trying to save a kid from drowning. My grandpa told me story after story about him when I was little. Grandpa's name was Dennis and my Aunt suggested Louden which thank goodness was a real name. Grey was my bio mom's maiden name and I guess I've always loved that my name means something from begining to end.
  • My name is Rachel and I love it! I only liked it when I was a kid, as an adult I love it. I have met very few Rachels in my life too. I will say though I am not a fan of my middle name. It feels like filler like Anne or Rose. I am hoping my kids like both their names.

I'm Christina and I dislike my name because people always call me Christine instead.  The mispronunciation of my first name, combined with my uncommon maiden name was just a nightmare growing up.  I've never felt a connection with my middle name which is Valerie, so going by that was never really an option.

I personally really like it, though when I was a preteen I wanted something much more common so I could blend in more and have a keychain with my name. I think it's becoming a little more common now than it was for my age group. At any rate, I don't have to repeat it quite as often as I used to. But if I had a nickel for every time someone called me Maria...
